Instructions for connecting to GlobalProtect VPN

Linux Ubuntu

1) Open ‘Terminal’.

2) Enter the command ‘sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc’. VPNC will be installed.

3) Move your cursor to right-top corner system tray area, click on Network Manager icon and
choose VPN Connections > Configure VPN.

4) Click on Add button to add a new connection and then choose Cisco Compatible VPN (vpnc)
from the drop-down menu and click Create.
5) Enter the following information:

Connection name: UoS

Gateway: globalprotect.soton.ac.uk

User name: <your University username>

User password: Leave set to ‘Always Ask’

Group name: soton

Group password: Set to ‘Saved’ and enter’soton’

Ensure that ‘Use hybrid authentication’ is unchecked

6) Click Save.

7) Press ‘Save’.

8) Click Close on the Network Connections.

9) To use the VPN, move your cursor to right-top corner system tray area, click on Network
Manager icon and choose VPN Connections > UoS.
10) Enter your University password and press ‘OK’

You are now connected to the VPN service. All traffic from your device will flow over a secure tunnel
back to the University network.

11) To disconnect move your cursor to right-top corner system tray area, click on Network
Manager icon and choose VPN Connections > Disconnect VPN.
