ATTITUDES AND FUNCTIONS

TWO MAIN ATTITUDES:


 Extraverted – orientation towards the external, objective world. Extraverts are more influenced
by their surroundings than by their inner world. They tend to focus on the objective attitude
while suppressing the subjective.
 Introverted – orientation towards the internal, subjective world. They are tuned in to their inner
world with all its biases, fantasies, dreams, and individualized perceptions.
FOUR FUNCTIONS

 Thinking (rational) – intellectual activity that produces ideas to comprehend the nature of
the world.
 Feeling (rational) – evaluative function which sees whether something has positive or
negative value.
( They are called rational functions because make use of reason, abstraction, judgment and
generalization.)
PSYCHOANALYSIS

 Hysteria – a disorder typically characterized by paralysis or the improper functioning of cerparts


of the body.
 Catharsis – the process of removing hysterical symptoms through “talking them out.”
(influenced the free association technique)
