EC 206 SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS
(Time allowed: 60 MINS.)
Candidate’s Name: ID No:
NOTE: 1.Answer All questions.
2.Total marks are specified after each questions in parenthesis.
3.Assume suitable data if required.

1. Determine whether or not each of the following signals is periodic. In case a signal is
n
periodic, specify the fundamental period. (i)x(n) = 3 cos(5n + π6 ) (ii) x(n) = 2ej( 6 −π)
(iii)x(n) = cos( πn
2
) − sin( πn
8
) + 3 cos( πn
4
+ π3 ) (3 marks)
2. Consider the following analog sinusoidal signal, xa (t) = 3 sin(100πt). This signal is sampled
with a sampling rate Fs = 300 samples/sec. Determine the frequency of the discrete time
signal x(n) = x(nT ), T = F1s and show that it is a periodic. (3 marks)
3. An analog ECG signal contains useful frequencies upto 100Hz. (i) What is the Nyquist rte
for this signal? (ii) Suppose that we sample this signal at a rate of 250 samples/sec, what is
the highest frequency that can be represented uniquely by that sampling rate. (2 marks)
4. Find the ROC for the following signal in Z domain. (2 marks)
(
αn , if n ≥ 0
x(n) = αn u(n) =
0, n < 0.
5. Find the overall impulse response of the following interconnected systems shown in Fig. 1.
Take h( n) = δ(n) + 21 δ(n − 1), h2 (n) = 21 δ(n) − 14 δ(n − 1), h3 (n) = 2δ(n), h4 (n) =
−2( 21 )n u(n) (5 marks)

6. The system τ {·} is a linear system. When inputs to this system are x1 (n), x2 (n) and x3 (n),
the response of the system are y1 (n), y2 (n) and y3 (n), respectively.
τ {·}
x1 (n) = {−2, 1, −2} ←→ y1 (n) = {6, −7, 10, −5, 2}

τ {·}
x2 (n) = {−2, 1, 0} ←→ y2 (n) = {6, −7, 4, −1, 0}
↑ ↑
τ {·}
x3 (n) = {0, 1, 1} ←→ y3 (n) = {0, −3, −1, 1, −1}

(a) Determine the impulse response of this system. (3 marks)
(b) Determine whether the given system is time-invariant or not? (2 marks)
