Chilled Water Pumps Calculations
Chilled Water Pumps Calculations
Given the cooling load in tons of refrigerant (T.R.), the flow of water in GPM can be calculated
using the following formula:
QBtu / hr = 500 × GPM × ΔT
Where:
ΔT = Tin − Tout
QBtu / hr = QT . R. × 12000
As per our design criteria, the chilled water supply should be 7oC, and the chilled water return should
be 12oC, therefore
Tin = 12.0°C
⇒ ΔT = 5°C = 9° F
Tout = 7.0°C
⇒ ΔT ≅ 9° F
After applying equation (1):
QT . R. × 12000 = 500 × GPM × 9
QT . R. × 12000
⇒ GPM =
500 × 9
H = [Pressure Drop in Chiller + Pressure Drop in Piping] x 2 x 1.5 = (8m + 5m) x 2 x 1.5 =
39m we choose 40m
The total chilled water flow is 78 L/S; we select two secondary chilled water pumps with
minimum efficiency 90% and head 50m.
The maximum Flow of the secondary pump will be 39.0L/S,
Accordingly we will use 2 secondary chilled pumps (39 L/s @ 50m).
Note that the actual pressure drop calculations to be performed and verified by
contractor according to actual workshop drawings.
Velocity Recommended
Service Velocity Recommended (m/s)
(FPS)
Pump discharge 8-12 2.4 - 3.65
Pump Suction 4-8 1.2 – 2.4
Header 4-15 1.2 – 4.6
Based on the above table we choose the velocity 1.5m/s to calculate the main pipes size
Main Pipe Diameter
Based on the above table, the pipes diameters were calculated as follows:
Qm 3 / s = V × S (2)
Where:
V = 2.4 m/s
π × D2
S= m²
4
Knowing that:
Qm3 / s = 0.0387m3 / s
After applying equation (2):
π × D2
Q =V ×
4
Then:
For velocity 1.5m/s
⇒ D = 0.181 m. Choose Pipe diameter to be 200mm
Qm 3 / s : Flow of water in m³/s
Given:
D = 5.78 613 =143mm ≅ 150mm which give velocity 2.1m/s, which is acceptable.
