Chi-Square Test

Excel does not return the value of X , it only returns the p-value to tell you whether the Chi-Square test is

significant or not. For example, if you want to calculate the car color preference example from the
lecture (Expected purchase number is listed as 25 for each color category of cars, and the numbers on
the last row show the actual observed purchase), you will need to follow the steps below:

1. Enter the numbers in Excel

Red Blue Black White

Expected Frequency 25 25 25 25
Observed Frequency 48 15 10 27

2. Click on a blank cell where you want the p-value to show.


3. Type =CHITEST(A3:D3, A2:D2)

You will see that p-value is around 0.00000017 (or the scientific notation is 1.69575E-07) and it
shows the difference between the observed and expected preferences are statistically significant at 0.05
level.
