DOVER IIC
From strength to strength,
year on year
At Dover India Innovation Center,
we are constantly improving our
infrastructure to augment our current
capabilities, and to be a world-class
center of excellence. IIC has heavily
depended on external partners for
analysis and testing, which has
increased cycle time and cost in
the past. Investment in the new lab,
a proto-build and testing facility at
Peenya, allows IIC to turnaround
projects faster with superior results to
our OpCos.
The lab is strategically located at
Peenya, one of Bangalore’s oldest
industrial areas, to leverage its
existing ecosystem for prototype
building and testing. The lab gives
IIC engineers the edge to run quick
iterations and evaluate multiple
potential concepts.
IIC has already seen excitement
amongst OpCo stakeholders who
have visited the lab. Hillphoenix has
approved a capex investment for
building refrigeration test cells, which
will be commissioned in the next
12-18 months.
IIC is truly moving ahead from
strength to strength, year on year!

Dover Football League

12 matches.
7 teams.
1 memorable finale!

Held on December 16 at Fairplay Arena, JP

Nagar, the Dover Football League saw 7 teams
battle it out across 12 matches. The final was a
fiercely contested game between Team United
and Team Shooters with the former emerging
2-0 winners. As for individual honors, the ‘Best
Player’ award went to Suhas of Team United
for his exemplary show of sportsmanship and
determination, all through the tournament.

Asked about the league, Suhas said, “It was

very well conducted and all the teams played
with great passion and enthusiasm. These
games are a welcome break from our everyday
routine, and we’re all eagerly looking forward to
the next tournament!”

Family Day — Getting FAMILIar

with Dover Chennai!
February 23 marks the anniversary of the
Dover Chennai plant. On this day every
year, the team at Chennai celebrates
‘Family Day’ – a time to recognize our people
for their efforts and connect with their families.
In the lead up to the big day this year, the
Events Team organized games and activities to
whet the appetite of everyone involved. There
was a little something for the kids too with
dancing, singing, and magic shows being the
most popular events of the day.

However, the highlight of the event was the

‘Safety Commitment Board’ – a unique initiative
that encourages families to pledge the safety of
the Doverite at home while Dover promises to
ensure their safety at work.

Meet Abid
With over 20 years of experience in Distribution Management,
Operations Management, Product Development, and Supply Chain
Management, Abid Ahmed is today the Managing Director at Markem-
Imaje, India – a global manufacturer of ink-jet printers. In addition to
driving overall company strategy, he is currently helping the South Asia
business break new ground in global markets.

Abid’s track record at multinational companies such as Gardner

Denver, Aggreko, Pentair, and Quippo Energy makes him just the man
to take Markem-Imaje to new heights.

Who are the people you look up to as
role models?
My role model is Ratan Tata because of
his ability to dream big and then execute
it wonderfully. His humility and people-
leadership is something that inspires me
every day.
What are some of the things you do to
keep your team motivated?
A motivated team is the key to driving better
performance. That’s why, I take the time to:
• Instill confidence in teams
• Train them in their respective areas of
expertise
• Participate in their discussions and learn
from them
• Engage in ‘Participative Leadership’
which allows employees to
independently find solutions for
organizational challenges
What’s the most important factor you
consider while hiring someone?
In addition to being a good fit for the role, I
look for a positive, can-do attitude. I believe
one can achieve anything with a positive
outlook in life.
What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever
taken – at or outside of work?
My MBA summer internship was one filled
with several setbacks. I was part of a tech-
transfer project, which was constantly
passed around between teams and
inevitably led to several delays. It was
at this point that I decided to approach
my boss to discuss the possibility of
leading the team – an audacious move
for an intern! Surprisingly, he responded
in the affirmative and gave me complete
ownership of the project. Over the
following two months, I was able to
significantly accelerate the project, and
even won a job offer by the end of it.
What’s the most inspiring movie
or book you’ve come across,
and why?
‘Matsushita Leadership’ by John P Kotter
is definitely a winner for me. It narrates
the story of Matsushita – the founder
of Panasonic, Japan’s $65 billion
company. He rose to become one of the
most successful business leaders of all
time and is a fine example of legendary
entrepreneurship.
What advice would you give to an
employee going into a leadership
position for the first time?
As a leader, it’s crucial to respect the
people you work with and lead by
example. It is, in fact, just as important
to constantly learn and find new ways to
keep up with the next generation.

to go trekking through the Agumbe Ghats.
Plans were made, a car was rented, and we
were all set to leave the following morning.

Pumped with caffeine for a day filled with

adventure, we set off on our first
escapade – Kundadri Hills – a popular
destination among hikers and nature
enthusiasts. As wonderful as the Hills
were, the trek ended sooner than
expected, leaving us wanting more. We
decided to spend the rest of the day
visiting other landmark locations in the
vicinity. As we discussed the specifics
over a steaming cup of chai at a humble
stall, a local – having overheard our
conversation – suggested that we make
our way to Barkana Falls. He insisted
it was a must-see destination, and so
began our next adventure of the day.

Hiking down a winding, beaten path, we

slowly bid goodbye to civilization. And
as we trudged deeper and deeper into
the forest, we inevitably began to doubt
our progress. Just then, however, Lady
Luck smiled upon us. Hanging lazily
off the branch of a tree was a rustic
signboard directing us towards the falls.

Spurred on by the signboard, we

pushed further. Soon, we heard the
distant murmur of water gently trickling
downhill. It was a creek that seemed
at least neck-deep and had no visible
means of getting across other than

wading through. Having come so far,
we weren’t about to give up at our
first hurdle! Just as we were bracing
ourselves to make our way through the
currents, one of the boys announced
that he couldn’t swim. Not willing to go
any further, he chose to return to the
car instead. Though disappointed that
he couldn’t accompany us, we decided
to brave the stream – albeit without the
ideal swimwear.
Once safely across, we continued
walking for almost two hours, treading
past giant trees with no sign of people
or for that matter, any water body. It was
soon nearing twilight and we began to
seriously wonder if there really was a
waterfall at all. It was time for luck to
strike again. Out of what seemed like
nowhere, two native men came walking
towards us with a sickle each.
“Which way is Barkana Falls?” I asked.
One of the men pointed in the direction
we were headed and said, “Half an hour
walk.”
We gazed at each other, unsure. Then
the other man retorted, “It’s ten minutes
for young boys like you – if you run!”
It was at this point that reality hit home.
It was nearing nightfall and we had a
friend waiting for us, not to mention the
army of leeches clinging to our shirtless
bodies like vampires.
Casting all our doubts aside, we
sprinted in the direction of the waterfalls
– if only to gratify our egos. We ran –
leaping from one boulder to another,
until we were within earshot of the falls.
Halting to a stop at the edge of the cliff,
we could finally experience the true
beauty that is Barkana Falls. From our
vantage point, it looked like a solitary
silver tear track making its way down
the wrinkled face of the mountain – an
ironically uplifting sight. And despite
the many hurdles we encountered – or
maybe because of them – we wouldn’t
hesitate to do this trek all over again!

Eduardo Navarro de Andrade heads
Marketing, Engineering,
Research & Development, and
Product Management for our key
brands — Anthony and Hillphoenix.
With over 20 years of experience in the
refrigeration industry, he brings valuable
insights to all his roles.
We spoke to Eduardo about the partnership between IIC and Dover Food Retail,
and its numerous future prospects. Here's what he had to say:
What is the purpose of your visit to
Dover India Innovation Center?
To foster a mutually beneficial
partnership between IIC and Dover
Food Retail, it is crucial that both the
organizations work in tandem with one
another. To this end, my visit here was
a good opportunity to interact with the
people at IIC. This has also helped me
establish a strong working relationship
with the Indian leadership team — the
first step in cementing a successful
long-term partnership.
From what you observed during your
visit, how can Dover Food Retail
leverage IIC’s strengths?
Dover Food Retail is already harnessing
IIC’s capabilities to deliver quality
solutions to customers. However, there
are still some areas that are relatively
untapped, namely that of R&D and
Operations, that can provide greater
scope for engagement. Going forward,
I believe both teams will explore and
make the most of every opportunity
these fields have to offer.

What did you like most at IIC and
what do you think we should do
more of?
It was very exciting to see the teams
at IIC fully engaged in their respective
projects. To help deliver further value, I
would advise the employees to focus on
two things:
• Reach out to their US counterparts,
and
• Better understand our customers’
needs
IIC has been transforming from a
center of cost arbitrage to a strategic
partner for our OpCos’ organic
growth. What is your advice for IIC to
accelerate its transformation in this
direction?
It appears to me that this transformation
is already well underway. But I think
we should continue to invest in talent
by recruiting highly qualified people
while creating more opportunities for
our existing employees. In addition,
investing in testing and application
infrastructure to verify and validate
locally developed products will go
a long way in establishing IIC as a
strategic partner to all OpCos.
What future prospects of this
partnership excite you the most?
I look forward to seeing this
partnership going from strength to
strength with both teams set to break
new ground in the near future. In
fact, with the breadth of diversity and
talent that we are building, we will be
better equipped to innovate across
our product and service offerings.

Akshaya Patra Donation
Making an impact, one meal
at a time
Dover India has joined hands with Akshaya
Patra Foundation – a not-for-profit
organization – to do our bit in the fight
against hunger and malnutrition. Committed
to improving the health of every school-
going child, Akshaya Patra implements the
government’s Midday Meal Scheme by
providing wholesome food to children on a daily
basis. With this donation, we will be providing
meals for 500 school children, every day for
one whole year!
New science labs @ Parikrma
Bringing life to lessons
Dover India recently funded a mini-science
lab for students at the Parikrma Centre For
Learning, Koramangala. The overwhelming
response received from this initiative
encouraged us to invest in four more mini-
science labs – three of which are set to open
at other Parikrma branches across the city;
with the fourth being a government school with
which Parikrma has an MOU. Designed to
function as learning units, these labs come fully
equipped with portable models that illustrate
science principles, helping students better
understand their theoretical learnings.
DFS Blood Donation Drive
Making every drop count
One of the primary medical concerns in the
country today is insufficient transfusable blood.
To tackle this problem, the CSR Team at Dover
Fueling Solutions, in collaboration with Tata
Memorial Hospital, organized a blood donation
drive on January 19, 2018.
Student Sponsorship
Supporting the leaders of tomorrow

Higher education plays a crucial role in

shaping the professional future of young
adults. This sentiment inspired us to fund
the education of a second-year student,
Nikitha B – currently pursuing her Diploma
in Electronics & Communication at SJES
Polytechnic, Bangalore.

With the help of a Dover mentor, Nikitha

will receive constant guidance and hands-
on experience by way of training sessions
and internships. This will then give her the
foundation needed to build a successful career Class Sponsorship
from the ground up. Investing in children. Investing in
the future.

In 2015-16, Dover India sponsored a class of

6th graders at the Parikrma Centre for Learning,
Koramangala. This year, we plan to support
yet another set of young learners – 30 Grade
5 students at Parikrma Centre for Learning,
Nandhini Layout. These initiatives enable us
to give children quality school education, year
after year.

The event saw active participation from many
Dover employees who came together to collect
87 units of blood – a considerable achievement
in our books!
Speaking about the initiative, Mr Sankha
Bhattacharya, GM India – OPW & Dover
Fueling Solutions said, “We are very proud to
have organized an initiative that will immensely
benefit the cancer patients of Tata Memorial
Centre. It gives me great pleasure to see our
employees enthusiastically supporting such
causes and demonstrating their strong sense
of social responsibility. The active participation
of our employees is testimony to our positive
attitude towards social causes. We will continue
to do our bit to make society a better place.”
