1.PURPOSE : To describe the procedure of fumigating microbiological room by use of

formalin and potassium permanganate.

2.SCOPE :This procedure is applicable to QC Microbiological room.

3.RESPONSIBILITY : Microbiologist

4.ACCOUNTABILITY : QC Manager

5.PRECAUTION :

a. Handle the formalin solution carefully as it is corrosive in nature.

b. Use hand gloves while handling the formalin.

MATERIAL :

a) Formalin solution 37%

b) Potassium permanganate crystals.

c) Petri plate

6.PROCEDURE :

a .Before entering into the airlock remove the footwear outside the room.

b. Ensure that the door closes completely on releasing when you enter the airlock.

c. Remove the normal clothing and put it on the hanger.

d. Take one set of sterile uniform wear sterile uniform as per the instructions given blow.

i) Put the headgear.

ii) Then Put the bush shirt and then pyjama.

iii) Headgear to be tucked into the bush shirt and in turn to be tucked in the pyjama.

iv) Put the food wear and it properly.

e .Rinse the gloved hands with 70% Isopropyl alcohol.

f. Open the door with care while entering the microbiology room.

g. Before f fumigation ensure that the air handling is shut off to prevent the fumes of

formalin to enter the other areas through air handling unit.

h .Fill the separator with sufficient quantity of 50ml of formalin (1:1) with water.

i. Take around 25 gm Potassium permanganate crystals in a dry Petri late without lid.

j. Keep the separator filled with formalin on a tripod stand and keep the Petri plate

below the separate with Potassium permanganate.

k. Place it at the centre of the area which is to be fumigated.

l. Loosened the stopcock so that formalin will fall drop by drop on the Potassium

permanganate powder.

m. Immediately come out of the room, lock the door.

n. While coming out remove the sterile uniform in the reverse order that is first gloves.

o. Second footwear, third pyjama and forth bush shirt and lastly the head mask.

P .Put your normal clothing kept on the hanger before opening the door of the airlock

confirm that door of micro room is closed.

q. These uniform gloves are to be washed and resterilized before using for next

operation.

r. The fumigation is recorded.

7.FREQUENCY:

Weekly 3 days.
