Reason for Change: Change in Format

PURPOSE
1.
To lay down the procedure for operation of muffle furnace.

2. SCOPE
It is applicable to raw materials and finished products which require ignition to a constant
weight, at very high temperature.

3. RESPONSIBILITY :
3.1 Concerned QC Personnel is responsible to adhere to the procedure while operating the
muffle furnace.

5. PRECAUTIONS RESPONSIBILITY

5.1 Do not open the furnace when test is in progress. Concerned QC

5.2 Always use a long pair of tongs to load / unload the material. Concerned QC

6. PROCEDURE

6.1 Put ON the muffled furnace and set temperature to the desired level Concerned QC
by pressing the SET button and adjusting with the coarse and fine Personnel
adjustment knobs
6.2 Sufficient time should be allowed to furnace to settle down to a Concerned QC
stable and desired temperature before further adjustment is Personnel
attempted
6.3 Heat a silica crucible to redness for 10 minutes. Cool in a dessicator Concerned QC
and weigh Personnel
6.4 Take the weight of the silica crucible with sample. Concerned QC

6.5 Ignite gently at first until the substance is charred & heat gently until Concerned QC
white fumes no longer evolve. Personnel

6.6 Transfer the above crucible and sample immediately to the furnace Concerned QC
and carry out ashing of the sample at specified temperature until no Personnel
black particles are visible.

6.7 Remove the silica crucible with the ash and allow it to cool in a Concerned QC
dessicator and weigh to a constant weight. Personnel
