Spring 2001

Homework #1
(due before class 1/15/2001)

Solve the following problems in Levenspiel (required textbook):

1.1, 1.2, 1.3;
2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, 2.12, 2.15, 2.16, 2.18, 2.23.

Extra credit:
Solve the following problems in Fogler (on reserve in Phys. Sci. library):
P1-10 (pp. 27-28)

Important Note:
In doing these problems, try to develop the habit of putting the relevant
equations/calculations into your favorite math program (Excel, Mathematica, MathCad,
etc.), so that you can quickly plot the result and then see very easily the most important
thing: how the key numbers in the equation(s) affect the result of your calculation. This
is called the parametric sensitivity analysis and it is the most important engineering
exercise that you will be doing all your life.
