Spiritual Warfare -

The Unseen Battle

I. The Two Kingdoms
The Kingdom of Darkness
Satan Thrown Down to Earth (Revelation 12:7-10)
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting
against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought
back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any
place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was
thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil
and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was
thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown
down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven,
saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom
of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for
the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who
accuses them day and night before our God.
The Kingdom of Darkness
Apocalisse 12:7-10
lʼantico serpente, chiamato «diavolo» e «Satana», quello
che imbroglia il mondo intero, fu gettato giù sulla terra ed
anche i suoi angeli malvagi furono gettati giù.Allora udii
e notte li accusava davanti a Dio.
The Origin of Evil
“...‘This is what the Lord GOD says:
“You served as my model, my example of
complete wisdom and perfect
beauty...You were the anointed
cherub;having been set in place on the
holy mountain of God, you walked in the
midst of fiery stones. You were blameless
in your behavior from the day you were
created until wickedness was discovered
in you.” - Ezekiel 28: 12-15
The Origin of Evil
● “Your heart became
proud on account of
your beauty, and you
corrupted your
wisdom because of
your splendor.”
Ezekiel 28:17
● “I threw you to the
earth” (Ezekiel
28:18)
“God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the
wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame
the strong, God chose what is low and despised in
the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing
things that are” (1 Corinthians 1:27-28 RSV).

of heaven and have fallen down to the earth

The Kingdom of Darkness
Job 1:7
● The Lord said to Satan,
“Where have you come
from?” Satan answered the
Lord, “From roaming
throughout the earth, going
back and forth on it.”
● E l’Eterno disse a Satana:
"Donde vieni?" E Satana
rispose all’Eterno: "Dal
percorrere la terra e dal
passeggiare per essa".
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He
prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to
devour. 1 Peter 5:8
Siate sobri, vegliate; il vostro avversario, il diavolo, va
attorno a guisa di leon ruggente cercando chi possa
divorare. 1 Pietro 5:8
The Kingdom of Darkness
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the
spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12
poiché il combattimento nostro non è contro sangue e
carne, ma contro i principati, contro le potestà, contro i
dominatori di questo mondo di tenebre, contro le forze
spirituali della malvagità, che sono ne’ luoghi celesti.
Efisini 6:12
The Kingdom of Light
The temptation of Jesus
● In Luke 4:3 the devil said to Jesus, “If you are God’s
Son, tell this stone to turn into bread.” Jesus
responded, “No one can live on only bread.” (Luke
4:4)
● In Luke 4:6-7 that the devil said to Jesus, “I will give
all this power and glory to you. It has been given to
me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. Just worship
me, and you can have it all.” Jesus responded to His
enemy with a fierce rebuke, “The Scriptures say:
‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’
(Luke 4:8)
The temptation of Jesus
● Finally, the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem and had Him
stand on the top of a Temple. The devil said, “If you
are God’s Son, jump off. The Scriptures say: ‘God will
tell his angels to take care of you. They will catch you
in their arms, and you will not hurt your feet on the
stones.’ “(Luke 4:9-10)
Jesus answered, “The Scriptures also say, “Don’t try to
test the Lord your God!'” (Luke 4:12)

II. Our Weapons and Protection

Put on the full armor of God, so that you

can take your stand against the devil's
schemes. - Ephesians 6:11
The Full Armor of God
Our Weapons
● The Sword of the Spirit =
God's Word
● “For the word of God is living
and active and sharper than
any two-edged sword, and
piercing as far as the division
of soul and spirit, of both
joints and marrow, and able to
judge the thoughts and
intentions of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
Our Weapons
● Prayer
Ephesians 6:18-20. praying always with all
prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being
watchful to this end with all perseverance and
supplication for all the saints—and for me,
that utterance may be given to me, that I may
open my mouth boldly to make known the
mystery of the gospel, for which I am an
ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak
boldly, as I ought to speak.

Returning Good for Evil (Romans 12:17-21)
Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right
in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on
you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge,
beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is
written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
“But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty,
give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals
upon his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome
evil with good.
St. Catherine of Bologna:
Spiritual Weapons Against Evil
(1) to be careful always to do good; (2) to believe that
we can never achieve anything truly good by
ourselves; (3) to trust in God and, for His love, never
to fear the battle against evil, either in the world or in
ourselves; (4) to meditate frequently on the events and
words of Jesus' life, especially His passion and death;
(5) to remember that we must die; (6) to keep the
benefits of heaven firmly in our minds, (7) to be
familiar with Holy Scripture, keeping it in our hearts
to guide all our thoughts and actions".
Conclusion
Let us always be
ready to fight, with the
armor of God firmly in
place, weapons in
hand, knowing that it
is a spiritual warfare
that we are in, and
that victory is ours in
Christ Jesus our Lord.

have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But
take heart! I have overcome the world." - John 16:33
