Topic/ Title The Cell as the Basic Unit of Life

Grade level Grade 7

Time Allotment 1 Hour
Learning Competencies
Explain why the cell is considered the basic structural and functional unit of all organisms
(S7LT-IIe-5)
Objectives
a. Explain the role of organelles in cells by completing an activity
b. Show appreciation to the importance of each organelles through a poster making
Procedure

Elicit (3 minutes) (MAPEH) Materials

Students will be asked to bring out their ballpen Ballpen

“What are the parts of the ballpen?”

Engage (5 minutes) (MAPEH)
Students will then be asked the following questions: Ballpen
a. If you take away the ballpoint cap, will the
ballpen work properly?

b. What if you take away the ink, will you be able

to write in your paper?

c. What if the tube is absent, how will you use it?

Explore (15 minutes) (English)

Students will read and act as the actors in the story PowerPoint Presentation about the story
entitled “Smart Workers of Cell Company”

Students will be asked to answer the following:

a. What are the two groups of organelles in the

story that are quarreling with one another?

b. What makes lysosomes describe himself as

a cleanup crew?
c. If you will be given a chance to be one of
these organelles, who do you want to be?
Why?

d. What can you conclude to the story? Do

cells have different parts? Are their
functions essential for the cell to work as
one?

Explain (5 minutes)
A picture of plant cell and animal cell will be A picture of plant cell and animal cell
presented.

Students will be asked to list down at least 5

organelles and complete the table below.
Organelles Function/s
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Elaboration (7 minutes)
After the activity, students will be asked to answer
the following questions:

a. If we take away the lysosome will the cell

be able to work properly? Why
b. If chloroplast is absent in a plant cell, what
will happen? Why?

c. If a cell doesn’t have mitochondria, will it

function properly?
Evaluation (10 minutes)
Students will take a short quiz on organelles and
their function.
1. Pancreatitis is a disorder that causes human
pancreas cells to break down all of their
own contents and die when a certain type of
organelle ruptures. This disorder would
involve a problem with which of these
organelles?
a. Mitochondria
b. Lysosomes
c. Ribosomes
d. Endoplasmic reticulum
2. Muscle cells require large amount of energy
in order to produce movement. You would
expect muscle cells to contain a large
number of :
a. Chloroplast
b. Endoplasmic reticulum
c. Mitochondria
d. Membranes
3. Cyanide poisoning is lethal because it
interrupts the major function of the
mitochondria in eukaryotic cells. This
would mean that it interferes with:
a. Photosynthesis
b. Sorting proteins
c. Maintaining the cell’s shape
d. Energy production
4. Which of these structures would never be
found in animal cell?
a. Endoplasmic reticulum
b. Nucleus
c. Central vacuole
d. Mitochondria
5. Many antibiotics kill bacteria because they
alter the functioning of their ribosomes.
Which of the following cellular processes
would be directly altered by antibiotics?
a. Production of proteins
b. Lipid synthesis
c. Exocytosis
d. Intracellular digestion.

6. The _________ is an organelle that

contains digestive enzymes used to break
down old cellular components so they can
be removed from the cell by ___________.
a. Ribosome: endocytosis
b. Lysosome: endocytosis
c. Ribosome: exocytosis
d. Lysosome: exocytosis
Extend (15 minutes) (MAPEH)
Make a poster showing the importance of the Rubric
functions of each organelles in one’s life. Presentation
4- the poster clearly communicates the main idea
3- the poster communicates some of the important
ideas
2- the poster indirectly communicates the idea
1- the poster does not sufficiently communicate any
idea
Creativity and Originality
4- all of the graphics used on the poster reflect an
exceptional degree of student ingenuity in their
creation
3- most of the graphics used on the poster reflect
student ingenuity in their creation
2- the graphics were made by the student but were
copied from the designs or ideas of others
1- the graphics were not made by the student
Accuracy and Relevance of the Content
4- all graphics in posters are accurate and related to
the topic
3- most graphics in the poster are accurate and
related to the topic
2- some graphics in the poster are accurate and
related to the topic
1- the graphics in the poster are neither accurate nor
related to the topic.
