Lesson Title/ Focus Organelle Jigsaw Date Mar 28, 2024

Subject/ Grade Level Science 10 Time 70 mins

Unit Unit C: Cycling of Matter in Living Systems Teacher Adam Kobza

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning 1. Describe the function of cell organelles and structures in a cell, in terms of life
Outcomes: processes, and use models to explain these processes and their applications.
2. Work as members of a team in addressing problems, and apply the skills and
conventions of science in communicating information and ideas and in assessing
results

Specific Learning a. identify the structure and describe, in general terms, the function of the cell
Outcomes: membrane, nucleus, lysosome, vacuole, mitochondrion, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi
apparatus, ribosomes, chloroplast and cell wall, where present, of plant and animal
cells
b. compare the structure, chemical composition and function of plant and animal cells,
and describe the complementary nature of the structure and function of plant and
animal cells
c. describe the role of the cell membrane in maintaining equilibrium while exchanging
matter
d. select and use appropriate numeric, symbolic, graphical and linguistic modes of
representation to communicate ideas, plans and results

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Describe and list the organelles within a cell

2. Describe the importance of organelle functions

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
Attention Grabber Yesterday we talked a lot about cell structure and functions, along with the organelles that 5 min
perform life processes. Let’s do a quick review of what we talked about.
Transition Today we’re going to work in groups to become experts on one organelle and then make a 3 min
poster for everyone to see.
Time
Learning Activity #1 Split students into groups to make poster about organelles: 30 min
Must cover:
Structure and functions
where its located in the cell (cytoplasm, cell wall, etc)
why it’s important
what type of cell it’s located in

Organelles:
Chloroplasts
vacuoles and vesicles
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Ribosomes
Golgi apparatus
lysosomes
mitochondria
nucleus
Cell Wall and membrane

Once groups are assigned, have the students move into their groups.
Get one student to come up and grab poster paper from each group.
Notes Students may use cellphones during this time for research
Make it clear that using cellphones off topic will result in loss of cellphone for the period.
Make sure to circulate and keep students on task while working.
Learning Activity #2 Give students time to do a gallery walk, look at the posters. 20 min
Encourage them to finish the AEIOU categories on the back to see what they understand.

Review to determine understanding of concepts.
Notes Overflow: Start notes for chapter 2.3 until end of period.
Time
Reflection Overall, I felt really good about this lesson!
The overall quality and effort that went into the posters was better than I expected. I think
that next time I will leave more time for the gallery walk component, as we ran pretty close
to the end of the period. If I were to teach this again, I would want to try and make it more
accessible for the anxious kids somehow. It might be worth trying a version where students
pick their own groups.
Transition to Next Thank you for your participation and presentation today Science 10s.
Lesson Until we meet again, enjoy your spring break!
