Cooperation in Biological Control Control Subcommittee, under the chairmanship of

A potentially important development in international
scientific cooperation was initiated at a meeting held under
the auspices of the International Union of Biological
Sciences (IUBS) in Amsterdam on 17-19 November, 1969.
Thirty-four biological control specialists from twenty-
three countries, under the chairmanship of Professor
F. A. Stafleu, Secretary-General of IUBS, discussed a
proposal for a scientific body that would promote and
facilitate biological control research throughout the world.
An Organlsation Internationale de Lutte Biologique
(OILB) has existed for some time, but its membership has
been limited to western European and Mediterranean
countries. Participants at the meeting enthusiastically
agreed that OILB should be enlarged and the structure
altered to permit it to serve a global role, and drafted
appropriate new statutes. The principal changes made
include provision for individual, institutional and
supporting membership, and the creation of largely
autonomous regional sections formed on a bio-geographical
basis. It is expected that these proposals will receive
approval from IUBS and OILB, and that the new Inter-
national Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) will
come into being early in 1971.
The new organization hopes to attract membership not
only from scientists and research institutions directly
involved in research in biological control, but also from
those whose interests extend into this field. The British
National Committee for Biology has appointed a Biological
Professor J. S. Kennedy to consider this development from
the British point of view. This subcommittee is holding a
meeting at the Royal Society on 20 May, 1970 to discuss
the question of British participation in IOBC. Requests for
