I. SUMMARY :-

This Document covers the requirement of Integrated STM-1/STM-4 & Primary


Digital Multiplexer (PDMUX) equipment.

II. SOURCE

Document No. RDSO/SPN/TC/53/2009 Rev.1is the revised version of document


No. RDSO/ SPN/ TC/ 053/ 2005 Rev.0 which was prepared by RDSO/ Lucknow
as per the directives of Railway Board (Letter No. 2003/ Tele/ TP/ 1 dated
17/1/2005). The revision is issued as per directives of Railway Board issued vide
letter No. 2004/ Tele/ TE/ 3/Pt. dated 28/07/09 and this specification shall be
applicable for trials purposes only.

III. FOREWORD

Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) is an attached office of


Ministry of Railways, engaged in design and standardization of equipment for
use on Indian Railways.

RDSO/ SPN specification is issued as draft specification. This specification is


circulated to customers/ Railways and field inspection units for comments.

RDSO/ SPN along with comments received from various quarters is discussed
in Telecom Standards Committee Meeting (TCSC). Recommendation made by
TCSC is put up to Railway Board for approval. After approval from Railway
Board, the specification is given an IRS number and issued as Indian Railway
Standard Specification.

1.0 SCOPE AND GENERAL REQUIREMENT :

a) This document covers the requirement of integrated STM-1/STM-4 and Primary


Digital Multiplexing equipment. This integration is supposed to improve the
reliability of the combined equipment and provide single Network Management
System.
b) Upgradeability: (Optional feature): Composite SDH and MUX equipment shall
have optional feature of upgradeability from STM-1 to STM-4. The purchaser
shall give his option for upgradeability as per his requirement, while ordering the
equipment. The upgraded SDH equipment (STM-4) shall comply the
specifications of STM-4 as mentioned against various clauses of this document. If
this item is opted, the supplier shall give details regarding how this upgradeability
will be obtained.

c) Alarm acquisition (Optional feature): The equipment shall have facility to accept
and extend the Relay based or Voltage based External Alarm signals or Control
Signals from any of the Central and or Regional Stations to any of the Remote
Stations. The alarms should be monitored through NMS/ LCT . The equipment
should be able to support 24 such binary alarm inputs and should be able to
deliver 4 Binary command outputs. The command outputs should be switched
either through NMS/ LCT or through the alarm inputs. This feature is optional
feature and shall be provided if required by the purchaser . The purchaser shall
also give the exact number and type of such alarms and number of binary
command outputs required by him while ordering.

1.1 The equipment should support following multiple technologies with common
mother board & chasis.

• PDH transmission (2Mbps)

• SDH transmission (STM-1/ STM-4 if applicable optical & electrical)

• Ethernet over SDH

• Digital Cross Connect

1.2 The equipment shall be housed in standard 19” rack.

2.0 SPECIFICATION OF STM-1 / STM-4

2.1 Specification of STM-1 shall be as per TEC Generic Requirement No. GR/ SDH-
04/03 March’ 2005 in addition to those mentioned in this document.

The specification of STM-4 shall be as per TEC GR SDH-10/02. March’ 2005 in


addition to those mentioned in this document. .

2.2 The equipment shall work on the single mode optical fibre cable as per IRS
specification No. IRS:TC 55-2006 with latest amendments.

2.3 Short haul as well as long haul applications shall be supported.

2.4 The equipment shall be capable of working at 1310 nm and 1550 nm window of
operation as per ITU-T G 957.

3.0 SPECIFICATION OF PRIMARY DIGITAL MULTIPLEXER

3.1 Specification of 2 Mbps Drop Insert P.D Mux shall be as per IRS specification
No. IRS:TC 68-04 with latest amendments, save as mentioned in this document.

3.2 Following interfaces shall be supported

• 2W E&M
• 4W E&M
• 2W subscriber loop
• 2W exchange loop
• 2W hot line
• Low speed data interface Sync/ Async, RS 232 C/ V.24/ X.21
• 64 kbps data interface G.703/ V.35/ V.36
• N x 64 Kbps data interface V.35/ V.36
• E1 branching interface
• IDSL alongwith NTU
• SHDSL (As per RDSO/SPN/TC/052-2005)

3.3 The equipment shall have facility for a minimum of 18 three way conference
among any combination of time slots (64 kbps channel) and V.F side.

3.4 It shall also be possible to configure more than 3 way conference circuits with a
combination of time slots (64 kbps channel) and V.F side. The supplier shall
indicate the reduction in number of conference circuits in such a case.

3.5 Conference facility shall be provided on 4W voice interfaces. Any 4W E&M


channel shall be capable of being configured as a conference channel.

4.0 SYNCHRONISATION

4.1 The synchronisation of the system shall be done in accordance with TEC Generic
Requirement No. GR/SDH-04/03 March’ 05 for STM-1 and as per TEC GR
SDH-10/02. March’ 2005 for STM-4.

5.0 DIGITAL CROSS CONNECT

5.1 The equipment must support full cross-connect capability with a granularity of
VC4, VC3, VC12 and 64 kbps as per TEC GR No. GR/SDH-04/03 March’05 and
IRS specification No. IRS:TC 68-04 with latest
amendments. In case of STM-4, the cross connect capability shall be as per TEC
GR SDH-10/02. March 2005

6.0 OPERATION MAINTENANCE AND NMS

6.1 The equipment shall provide general management functions, alarm generation and
reporting, NMS and local craft terminal as per TEC Generic Requirement No.
GR/SDH-04/03 Mar’ 05 and IRS specification No. IRS:TC 68-04 with latest
amendments. In case of STM-4, provisions of TEC GR SDH-10/02. March 2005
shall be followed. The specification of LCT and servers as per relevant GR are
indicative, and detailed specification shall be provided by the purchaser.

7.0 POWER SUPPLY

7.1 Nominal power supply is -48 volts DC with a variation over the range -36 V to
- 72 V. The equipment should operate over this range without any degradation in
performance.

7.2 The equipment shall be adequately protected in case of voltage variation beyond
the range as specified in clause 7.1 above and also against input reverse polarity.

7.3 The derived DC voltages in the equipment shall have protection against over
voltage, short circuit and overload.

7.4 The actual power consumption of the equipment shall be indicated.

7.5 100% standby power supply shall be provided.

8.0 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

8.1 The range of ambient temperature and humidity within which the equipment
performance specification shall be met as well as the range within which the
equipment is to remain operational without any irreversible damage are as under
(As per QM 333 Table 4.3 Category B):

8.2 The environmental testing shall be conducted as per specification No. QM 333 for
environmental testing of electronic equipments for transmission and switching use
issued by DOT in September’ 1990. The testing shall be as per category ‘B2’ and
following tests shall be carried out:

a) Cold
b) Dry heat
c) Damp heat (cyclic)
d) Rapid temp. Cycling
e) Damp heat steady state
f) Vibration

9.0 Information to be giver by the purchaser: The purchaser shall provide

a) Ordering information as required to be provided in TEC GR No.


GR/SDH-04/03 Mar’ 05 or TEC GR SDH-10/02. March’ 2005 as
applicable and IRS specification No. IRS:TC 68-04 with latest
amendments.
b) Requirement of upgradeability feature as per clause 1.0 (b).
c) Requirement of Alarm acquisition feature as per clause 1.0 (c).
d) Specifications of LCT and servers.

10.0 Testing of equipment:

a) The testing of primary multiplexer part of equipments shall be


carried out as per IRS : TC 68-04.
b) The testing of STM-1 part of equipment shall be carried out as per
TEC GR No. GR/SDH-04/03 Mar’ 05.
c) In case of ordering of equipment which is upgradeable from STM-
1 to STM-4, the STM part of equipment shall be first tested for
STM-1 as per TEC GR No. GR/SDH-04/03 Mar’ 05 and then for
STM-4 as per TEC GR/SDH-10/02 March’ 2005 after upgrading
the same equipment to STM-4.
