AIM
To conduct the load test on a given dc series motor and obtain the performance curves.
APPARATUS REQUIRED
Note: List of apparatus required is prepared based on name plate ratings and circuit diagram in the
following format.
PRECAUTIONS
1. The motor should be started and stopped with load
2. Brake drum should be cooled with water when it is under load.
THEORY
It is observed that at no load, the motor current and the flux per pole tends to zero. As a
consequence, the motor speed increases to a very high value. This will cause damage to the
motor and hence the series motor must never be allowed to run at no load. Series motors are used
for cranes and traction purpose where huge starting torque is necessary. In addition to this, there
is another unique characteristic of series motor. When a load comes on a series motor, it
responds by decreasing its speed and supplies the increased torque with a small increase in
current. This feature is desirable for traction work.

PROCEDURE
1. Connections are made as per the circuit diagram.
2. After checking the load condition, DPST switch is closed. DC motor is started with a two
point starter.
3. The load is gradually added till rated current is reached. For various loads, Voltmeter,
Ammeter readings, speed and spring balance readings are noted.
4. After bringing the load to a safe low value, DPST switch is opened.
