1. Arteri  thick walls containing large quantities of elastic tissue. Although they also have smooth muscle,
arteries can be viewed most conveniently as elastic tubes. Because the arteries have large radii, they serve
as low-resistance tubes conducting blood to the various organs. Their second major function, related to
their elasticity, is to act as a “pressure reservoir” for maintaining blood flow through the tissues during
diastole. (Vander’s Human Physiology – The Mechanism of Body Function 11th ed)

Arteriol  The arterioles play two major roles: (1) the arterioles in individual organs are responsible for
determining the relative blood flows to those organs at any given mean arterial pressure, and (2) the
arterioles, all together, are a major factor in determining mean arterial pressure itself. (Vander’s Human
Physiology – The Mechanism of Body Function 11th ed)

Kapiler  at any given moment, approximately 5 percent of the total circulating blood is flowing through
the capillaries. It is this 5 percent that is performing the ultimate function of the entire cardiovascular
system—the exchange of nutrients, metabolic end products, and cell secretions. Some exchange also occurs
in the venules, which can be viewed as extensions of capillaries. (Vander’s Human Physiology – The
Mechanism of Body Function 11th ed)

Venula  Blood flows from the capillaries into small vessels called venules. From venules, blood
flows into veins that become larger in diameter as they travel toward the heart. Finally, the largest
veins, the venae cavae, empty into the right atrium. (Silverthorn 7th ed, Human Physiology Intergrated
Approach)

Vena  Blood flows from capillaries into venules and then into veins. Some exchange of materials occurs
between the interstitial fluid and the venules, just as in capillaries. Indeed, permeability to macromolecules
is often greater for venules than for capillaries, particularly in damaged areas. The veins are the last set of
tubes through which blood flows on its way back to the heart. . (Vander’s Human Physiology – The
Mechanism of Body Function 11th ed)
