Meiji Restoration & Modernization (1868-1912)

- With the downfall of Tokugawa, Emperor Meiji was restored to power. He

allowed the young samurai (who had already agreed to obey the Emperor) to
take leadership to modernize Japan. Their slogan was ‘Rich Country & Strong
Army, surely the focus was on economic and military modernization which really
transformed Japan to become a strong Asian power within several decades.
However the lack of political modernization and overemphasis on military
leadership paved the way for later rise of militarism in 1930s.
