Service Bulletin Category ENGINE

Date 01.07.2015

Subject : Changes in Cooling System

Applicability : G & D series Engines
Details : Coolant capacity & Aluminum Radiator care

Engine cut off : Engine Serial Number -1326061310497 – July 2014

Reason for Change:

1) Introduction of Aluminum core in place of copper core in radiator.
2) Introduction of CPCB II compliant engines.
3) Introduction of New D series engine.

GREAVES PREMIX COOLANT FOR ENGINES WITH ALUMINIUM RADIATOR

The Main advantage of this Pre-mix coolant is as below:-

 Pre-mix is ready to use coolant.

 Extended life of coolant and does not require coolant top up for long running hours.
 Prevents corrosion in aluminum, cooper, and mild steel.
 As it comes in pre-mix form, it eliminates the possibility of usage of wrong water quality, by
which scale formation can be controlled.
 Increase water pump seal life.
 Higher boiling point reduces loss of coolant in cooling system.

For More details of Pre Mix coolant, Please refer service circular No. HO: SER: CIR: 0005 dt. 02.08.15
Pre Mix Coolant top up & change interval

 Top up: if PH value goes below 7.5 top up needs to be

done. The test strip shows PH value of the coolant

 Coolant replacement: After every 3000 hrs of engine

running.

Stray current in engine cooling system

All metals by nature have a property that varies in value and when two differing metals are
connected by an electrolyte (coolant) a current can be generated from one metal to the other. The
combination of cast iron and aluminum can act as a simple battery.

Effect of Excessive Stray current in cooling system

Stray current if exceeds the limit will damage aluminum core & cause leakage from the core / tubes.

How to check Stray current in cooling system

 For measuring the stray current, multi meter is

used.

 Place negative terminal of the multi meter on

battery negative post (Terminal).

 Dip positive lead of multi meter in coolant without

touching the core or filler neck.

 Reading of more than 0.05V indicates presence of potentially damaging stray current.

How to solve Excess stray current issue

 Check the stray current with battery cables disconnected from the engine ( as described in
How to check stray current), if the value of stray current founds less with battery disconnected
shows bad or poor earth connections of electrical components connected to engine, rectify
earth connection problems & check for stray current values & it should be below 0.05 V with
battery connected to engine.
 By flushing the cooling system with plain water and using new Pre mix coolant.

Note : “GREAVES KOOL” Pre Mix coolant can be used in both Aluminum & copper core radiators
without mixing with water, But “ GREAVES MAXTHERM ( Concentrated Coolant)” should not
used in Aluminum core radiators, as MAXTHERM Coolant use will corrode the aluminum core
and may lead to leakage from radiator.
