Martha E. Rogers dilahirkan pada tanggal 12 Mei 1914 di Dallas Texas. Ia merupakan anak tertua dari empat bersaudara, dari pasangan Bruce Taylor Rogers dan Lucy Mulholland. Dia menerima gelar diploma keperawatan dari sekolah rumah sakit Knoxvillepada tahun 1936. Pada tahun 1937 ia menerima gelar B.S. dari George Peabody Perguruan Tinggi di Nashville, Tennessee. Setelah aktif sebagai perawat kesehatan dia melanjutkan pendidikan yang lebih tinggi, sampai mendapatkan gelar doktor dari Universitas Johns Hopkins di Baltimore. Menduduki posisi staff dalam keperawatan kesehatan masyarakat, serta membentuk pelayanan perawat pertama di Arizona, kemudian ia pindah ke perguruan tinggi sebagai dosen tamu dan bergabung dengan asosiasi penelitian selama 21 tahun. Rogers adalah Profesor dan Kepala Divisi Perawat Pendidikan di Universitas New York sampai tahun 1954, disini Roger fokus mengajar, memformulasi dan mengelaborasi teorinya. Dia meninggal pada 13 Maret 1994, pada umur 79.(Hector, 1989 dalam McEwen & Wills, 2011).
2.2 Konsep Teori Martha E. Rogers
Dasar teori Rogers adalah ilmu tentang asal-usul manusia dan alam semesta seperti antropologi, sosiologi, agama, filosofi, perkembangan sejarah dan mitologi. Teori Rogers berfokus pada proses kehidupan manusia secara utuh. Ilmu keperawatan adalah ilmu yang mempelajari manusia, alam dan perkembangan manusia secara langsung. (Tomey & Alligood, 1998).
Keperawatan adalah ilmu humanistik/humanitarian yang menggambarkan
dan memperjelas bahwa manusia dalam strategi yang utuh dan dalam perkembangan hipotesis secara umum dengan memperkirakan prinsip-prinsip dasar untuk ilmu pengetahuan praktis.Ilmu keperawatan adalah ilmu kemanusiaan yang mempelajari tentang alam dan hubungannya dengan perkembangan manusia.
