What is the role of music in the Spanish culture?

No doubt music is highly valued and appreciated in Spanish society.
Through its different manifestations, music has always been an essential part in the
life of Spaniards.
It is known that Spain is a diverse country in which many customs and
traditions can be found. These customs and traditions have been transmitted
through the centuries by means of music and dance. The distinctive features of
each of the seventeen regions in our country can be appreciated in the different
music styles and instruments used.
Flamenco has always been regarded as Spaniards’ passion. Well, this is not
completely true. Those who live in northern regions are not so keen on this musical
style. In the north, where folk music predominates, they might be offended with the
stereotyped association of Spain and flamenco music.
In these times when pop music from around the world inundates us, we still
listen to the type of melodic music our ancestors used to listen to.
Music is everywhere and it ia a valuable means to preserve and transmit
culture. The average Spaniard would not imagine starting the car without first
turning their favourite music radio station on.
