Calculation for the fault current

Details of Generator

Rating : 1675KVA
Voltage : 11Kv, 50 Hz
Sub transient Reactance : X” d = 0.087 pu

The fault current at the terminals of the generator is limited by the subtransient
reactance of the generator. The fault currenT will increase at the 11KV busbars,
when the generators are paralleled. Again at the busbar, the cable impedance
will act in series with generator subtransient reactance to restrict the fault current.

We are assuming that at the most 5 Nos. Generators can be paralleled at the
worst scenario.

The calculations are shown accordingly.

Base KVA = 1675

Base Kv = 11
Current for 1675KVA = 88A

% sub transient reactance for 1675KVA Generator = 0.087 pu

The overall impedance in pu when 5 generators are synchronized will be 0.087/5

= 0.0174 pu

Fault Current : full load = _88______ = 5057A

% impedance 0.0174

We have chosen 25KA for 3 Sec the busbar rating of 11Kv switchboard. Hence
we are safe and within limits.

If we add cable impedance in series, the fault current will come down.

NOTE;
1) LOWER THE RATING,HIGHER WILL BE THE VALUE OF REACTANCES
2) IT IS UNLIKELY THAT MORE THAN 4 GENERATORS WILL BE IN
PARALLEL
3) IF NGR IS IN PLACE FAULT CURRENT WILL BE FURTHER
RESTRICTED
4) IT IS ASSUMED GENSETS WILL NOT BE SYNCHRONISED WITH GRID
