Kia Oxygen Sensor Replacement DIY

In this guide, you will learn about Kia Oxygen Sensor issues such as: Common symptoms that indicate a bad Kia
oxygen sensor (O2) Fault codes related to bad oxygen sensor How to change oxygen sensor on Kia vehicles. Owners of
Kia Forte, Optima, Rio, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, Sedona, Soul, Borrego will find this guide helpful. The pictures below
were taken on a 2016 Kia Optima equipped with the 2.4L Theta II engine, which is the same exact engine used in other
Kia models previously mentioned and Hyundai Sonata as well. If you need help with finding Kia oxygen sensor location

HOW TO REPLACE KIA OXYGEN SENSOR

Before you start replacing the oxygen sensor we need to identify which oxygen sensor needs to be replaced. On 2.0T
and 2.4 L four-cylinder Kia engines there are two oxygen sensors. One is upstream of the catalytic converter, and one is
downstream. In the following tutorial, we will show you how to replace the upstream sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 1). The
procedure is the same for the downstream O2 sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 2). For the downstream sensor, you will find it
easier to access the O2 sensor from underneath the car.

Step 1: Open Hood

Start by turning off the ignition. Next, open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 2: Locate the oxygen sensor

Location of upstream oxygen sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1 Kia.

Step 3: Unplug the O2 connector
Step 4: Remove oxygen sensor
Step 5: Install new oxygen sensor

Install the new oxygen sensor on your Kia. When using a Kia OEM exact fit O2 sensor you can plug the new sensor directly
into the electrical socket. If you are using a universal O2 sensor you will need to splice and connect the

wires.

Torque Specifications

Tighten the new Oxygen Sensor to: 45 ~ 49 N.m (30 ~ 35 lb-ft)

KIA OXYGEN SENSOR PROBLEMS

The oxygen sensors play a crucial role on your Kia's fuel and emission system. When the oxygen sensor fails on your
Kia you may notice some or all of the following issues:

 Check Engine Light is ON

 Decrease in fuel economy
 Engine Hesitation or misfire
 Rough Idling

KIA FAULT CODES INDICATING A BAD OXYGEN SENSOR

This is a list of fault codes related to oxygen sensors. Note that the oxygen sensor may not always be the problem. You
may have other problems such as bad wiring harness for example. You can read these codes yourself using an OBD-II
code reader and clear them once you complete the repair.

Here is a partial list of Oxygen Sensor related fault codes.

KIA OXYGEN SENSOR LOCATION
Are you looking at the right oxygen sensor? Sure you don't want to replace the wrong O2 sensor and still have the check
engine light on. Finding the location of the oxygen sensor on a Kia is easy.

Location of oxygen sensor Kia (4-cylinder) cars

Four cylinder Kia engines have only one catalytic converter (Bank 1). The upstream, O2 sensor before the cat is Sensor
1. The downstream, O2 sensor after the catalytic converter is sensor 2.

Location of oxygen sensor Kia (V6) cars, SUV, VANs

V6 engines have two catalytic converters.Catalytic converter on the passenger side is Bank 1. Catalytic converter on
driver side is Bank 2. Upstream sensors are called sensor 1, downstream sensor are Sensor 2.
