Grand Christmas Carol Contest

Contest Mechanics
1. Contest period is from October 11 to December 19, 2010.
2. This contest is open to all choirs (amateur or professionals) in Metro Manila and nearby
provinces.
3. A choir should have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 30 members from a school,
office, church, community or any other organizations.
4. Pre-registration is from October 11 to October 30, 2010. Deadline of submission of
completely filled-out registration form (with affixed signature) is on October 30 at 6 pm.
Registration forms are available Mondays to Saturdays, 10am to 6pm at the Marketing
Dept., Admin Office, SM North EDSA, Quezon City.
5. Participating groups will be notified of their Elimination Round schedule via Registered
Mail and thru telephone/cellphone number (call or text message)/email address of their
designated head as per registration form.
6. Upon registration on their scheduled Elimination Round, competing groups must present
an official certification from the school, office, church, community or the organization
that they represent.
7. Competing groups must be at the venue 2 hours before the competition for briefing.
8. Each choir is required to sing three (3) different Christmas carols. Medleys are not
accepted. Violation of this will result in deduction of two (2) points from the overall
score of the group.
9. Songs to be performed should be in Tagalog or English. Two (2) Tagalog and one (1)
English Christmas carols or two (2) English and one (1) Tagalog Christmas carols.
10. Accompaniment, if any, is limited to one acoustic instrument – either piano, guitar, or
any other acoustic instrument. Use of any electronic instrument or recorded
accompaniment is not allowed.
11. Each choral group will be allotted a minimum of 9 minutes and a maximum of 12
minutes for their total performance time.
12. A corresponding deduction of 2 points from the overall score will be applied for every
excess of one minute in the group’s performance.
Over 12 minutes to 13 minutes – deduction of 2 points
Over 13 minutes to 14 minutes – deduction of 4 points
Over 14 minutes to 15 minutes – deduction of 6 points
Over 15 minutes – deduction of 8 points
13. An official timekeeper will be present in the officials table to keep tab of the
performance time of each participating group.
14. Individual microphones with stand will be provided for each member. Use of boom
microphone is not allowed.
15. Competing groups are not allowed to use props or any other set design within their
respective numbers other than microphones or microphone stands.
16. Contest Period/Rounds:
A. Elimination Round
November 7 – 4 choirs November 21 – 4 choirs
November 13 – 4 choirs November 28 – 4 choirs
November 14 – 4 choirs December 3 – 4 choirs
November 20 – 4 choirs
Venue is the Atrium The Block, 4pm
A DTI Representative will be present each date of the Elimination Round and during the
tabulation of scores to witness the proceedings.
Top 2 from each Elimination round regardless of tied scores will vie for the Semi-final
round.
B. Semi-final Round (14 choir groups)
December 4 – 3 choirs December 12 – 3 choirs
December 5 – 3 choirs December 18 – 2 choirs
December 11 – 3 choirs
Venue is the Atrium The Block, 4pm.
A DTI Representative will be present each date of the Semi-final Round and during the
tabulation of scores to witness the proceedings.
Top choir group from each day of Semi-final round will vie for the grand finals.
C. Grand Finals (5 choir groups)
December 19
Venue is the Atrium The Block, 4pm.
A DTI Representative will be present to witness the proceedings.
In case of a tie, the tied groups will share the prize.
17. Criteria for Judging:
Vocal Quality 40%
Intonation
Musicality 30%
Interpretation, harmony, blending
and dynamics
Showmanship 20%
Song choice, stage presence
and choreography
Costume 10%
TOTAL 100%
18. Champion will receive Php 35 000 and the next two groups in rank will receive Php.
10,000 each.
19. Twenty percent (20%) tax of prizes exceeding Php. 10,000.00 will be shouldered by the
winner.
20. All cash prizes will be paid in check.
21. Judges’ decisions are final. Any appeal or complaint must be formally submitted to the
contest organizer. A decision will be made by the organizer based on approved contest
mechanics with the concurrence of DTI.
22. Relatives of employees of SCMC and its affiliates, organizers, advertising agency and
judges including their relatives up to third degree of consanguinity or affinity are not
eligible to join this contest.
General Rules and Regulations
1. All competing groups agree to provide the information and cooperation to the contest
organizer and panel of judges as may be requested in order to verify their eligibility and
compliance with the contest mechanics.
2. Following deductions will be implemented on stated violations below:
a. Two (2) point deduction from the group’s total score if they sing more than three
(3) songs and/or they sing a medley.
b. Two (2) point deductions for every minute they exceed the maximum time allowed
for each group (12 minutes).
3. Each group will have to designate a group head that will be responsible for the group.
4. Each group (with CDs for musical background) will have to designate a representative
that will be assigned to coordinate with the organizer’s tech booth production assistant
and sound system provider to ensure that their group’s CD is working and cued correctly.
CDs must be submitted to Organizer’s tech booth production assistant one and a half
hour before start of program for checking.
5. Violation of following rules will result in the disqualification of the group from the
contest and forfeiture of prizes:
a. Minus one CDs must not contain any voice or voices of any form.
b. Use of live band set-up is not allowed.
c. Choir groups are not allowed to use props or any set design within their numbers.
6. All finalists agree to perform at SM North EDSA from December 20 to 31, 2010 as part of
SM North EDSA’s Christmas program for said period.
