1. Show how you can add the following numbers using the adding to ten facts:
a. 9 + 5
9 + 1 + 4
10 + 4
14
b. 5 + 7
5 + 5 + 2
10 + 2

2. a. Show how using partial sums addition to add 743 + 132 is similar to adding
( 7 x 2+ 4 x +3 ) +( x 2+3 x +2) .
700 + 40 + 3
100 + 30 + 2
800 +70+ 5 = 875
b. Show how using partial sums subtraction to subtract 743 132 is similar to
subtracting ( 7 x 2+ 4 x +3 ) −(x 2 +3 x+2) .
700 + 40 + 3
100 30 2
600 + 10 +1 = 611

b. How are your answers to the two problems similar? How are they different?
So, I’ve subtracted before by terms, hundreds, tens and units algebraically similar
to subtract algebraically squares powers, units powers and independents terms.
Later, results for algebraically subtraction by terms in negative number
subtraction be subtract (or add) again, therefore, in polynomial subtraction
different powers can’t subtract or add between theses.
b. Explain why there is no similar example using numbers like in the previous
problem.
(−3 x 2 +8 x−7 )
2
−8 x +10 x−14
All subtracting terms have same sign, therefore expression become in an
addition.
6. Subtract using frontend (“Mexican”) subtraction.

7. Subtract using equal addition subtraction. Remember, in your new subtraction
no borrowing should be needed!
