CVEN 2200: Surveying Notes:

Area of a triangle

Thought question: How to determine the area of these polygons through surveying?

CVEN 2200: Surveying
LAB #6: Compute the area of a polygon
 Objectives:
1. To become familiar with the procedure of measuring interior angles and horizontal
distances of a polygon using a total station and calculating the area of a polygon.
 Equipment:
Total stations, tripod, prim, flags.
 Instructions:
1. Use your flags to create a polygon with 6 vertices on the lawn.
2. Come up with two “divide-and-rule” procedures to measure the area of the polygon.
3. In your field book, document the parameters you measured, and calculate the area step by
step using the equations learned in class. Check if the two methods produce close
answers.
4. Sketch the polygon and the procedure on the right side of the field book.
