In C, the operator ^ is not an exponentiation operator. (It is in some other

programming languages, like BASIC, but not in the C language.)

In C, the operator ^ is a bitwise exclusive or (XOR) operator. So, let’s look at what
the C language will do with this expression.

Because of the parentheses in your expression, the two subexpressions will be

evaluated, and then the exclusive or will be performed. So, the value of a + b will
be exclusive or’ed with the value of the expression 1 / 2.

We don’t know the values of either a or b, since you didn’t provide them, but we
don’t really need them in this case. The expression 1 / 2 will perform integer
division, because both operands are integers. Thus, any fractional part of the
result will be discarded. So, the value of 1 / 2 in C is 0.

The exclusive or of something and 0 will result in the original something. So,
your expression is equivalent to:

(a + b) ^ 0

which is equivalent to:

(a + b)

Thus, the value of the entire expression will be the value of the expression a + b.
