High and Low

Grade Level: K Subject: Music

Lesson Aim/Objective: Distinguish between high and low sounds, and

recognize/demonstrate the voice or piece of music going up or down
(moving high or moving low).

Materials:
- Piano
- Laminated Pumpkins
- Willum, He Had 7 Sons Song
- High/Low Song
- See the Yellow Pumpkins Song
- PowerPoint with video clips (audio only needed)

Common Core Standards:

K.1. Read music that includes high and low pitches
K.3.1 Sing a variety of songs using ensemble singing
1.3.1 matching pitches using the head voice
1.3.2 Using echo and ensemble singing
1.8.1 Respond to music with movement using locomotor movements
1.8.2 Respond to music with movement demonstrating high and low
pitches
1.13.2 Differentiating vocal and instrumental music

Instruction/Procedure:
- Greet students at the door and tell them to sit in their seats.
- At the piano, play different notes and ascending/descending scales,
and ask them to use their bodies to show whether it was high or low
(standing on tip toes is high, on the ground is low).
- Teach them the high/low song using pumpkins
- Do several vocal sighs and vocal scales twice. Have them listen the
first time, and then repeat using their pumpkin and their voice.
- See the little pumpkins first with body movement, then with
pumpkins.
- PowerPoint with listening examples. If they are squirrely, use body to
show high/low. If well behaved, just use pumpkins.
- If time: Review Willum, and sing it using pumpkins. If well behaved
and there is more time, do it with the body movement we made up in
class.

Assessment Activity:
Students will be assessed on effort for this class. Most of the kids will
do a good job of following directions and trying their best, but some
students will have a hard time with that. The assessment of high and
low will come in a later lesson where they will be assessed on listening
and demonstrating high/low sounds and melodic movement.

Follow Up:
Next class we will review the piano activity, See the Little Pumpkins,
and Willum, before moving onto the next activity. These songs will be
used to teach other concepts, and will be reviewed to remember why
they knew the song.
