Age of Exploration

Scrapbook
By Sam Hoh
Europeans wanted to explore for gold, God, and glory. Explorers
wanted to make a name for themselves , so some decided to try and
find a sea passage to Asia. They needed salt for their food, which could
only be found in Asia, so they wanted to find a quicker passage and be
known for that. They also wanted their country to be rich in the event
that there was gold. They wanted to be the first ones there so it could
all be their’s. The only religion in Europe at this time was Christianity,
and a major part of Christianity is the spreading of the word. These
explorers were spreading the word as they were exploring new land
and spreading Christianity.
Caravels- A caravel is a small to medium size ship that could be used as
many things but was mainly used to explore and fish because of its small
size and maneuverability.

Magnetic Compass- The magnetic compass allowed for explorers to stay

in the right direction while exploring. This kept explorers on the correct
path while they were explorers.

Timekeeping- Timekeeping was important because it allowed sailors to

keep track of how fast their ship to sail.
Prince Henry the Navigator was apart of a
journey to travel around Africa and reach India.
He set up an expedition to travel around
Africa but died inn 1460 at the Canary Islands.
His ship continued and made it halfway around
Africa. But turned around due to a lack of
supplies.

Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese

nobleman who traveled from Europe
to India. He set sail in 1947 and
eventually reached India. He set sail
for a second time in 1502, but was
not as successful as his first
expedition.
Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492
across the Atlantic to try and reach asia.
Instead he found what is now known as
the Caribbean, but was previously
known as the New World.

Ferdinand Magellan lead an

exploration from Portugal to to
find another passage to Asia.
He ended up sailing into Brazil
and South AMerica, which is
why brazil’s native language is
Portuguese.
Who was the most influential
explorer?
Christopher columbus was the most influential explorer. He
was the first European explorer to successfully reach the
New World. He eventually ended up reaching the Caribbean
in 1942, and continue to sail from island from island. This
discovery gave spain a huge gain in wealth.
The columbian exchange mainly brought horses, pig and
cattle, cash crops such as sugar and tobacco, and diseases
like smallpox and measles from the old world to the new
world. The old world had plants like corn, beans and vanilla
which went to the new world.
Relations with natives were not very good.
Most tribes and civilizations were
suppressed or exterminated by European
explorers. 2 major native tribes the ,Aztecs
and Incas, were both conquered by
European forces. When the Europeans
came over from the old world they brought
diseases such as smallpox which killed an
incredible amount of natives due to no
vaccinations and weaker immune systems.
They also tended to get into battles with
natives due to greed and power struggles.
The triangular trade, worked by having goods go to Africa,
where they would trade said goods for slaves. They would then
take the slaves across to the Americans and sell their slaves.
Raw materials like sugar and tobacco went back to Europe and
the old world. Then they would go back to Europe and do the
whole thing over again. This lead to an increase in trade and an
increase in mercantilism. Mercantilism says that trade can bring
wealth to more people.
The transatlantic slave trade was so important
because it allowed America to have slaves. The
south heavily relied on slaves to allow for plantation
owners to make money. It also allowed more
European traders to make more money and bring
wealth to Europe. The MIddle Passage was the main
source of slaves being herded onto ships and being
taken to America without their consent.
Effects of exploration
Trade grew as more things were found in the new world and
were coming over. It also lead to more countries wanting to
explore the east. In the long run the founding of the new
world, made America different. With white Europeans
controlling and developing the area it grew in a different
way than it would if natives had stayed alone.
