Chapter I

“THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING”

Introduction

This research is all about Absenteeism among the senior high school student from Maligaya
National High School. First what is absenteeism? Do we have any knowledge about this? Actually,
sometimes we experience absenteeism to. So in this research we will find out what, where, why, and
how absenteeism occur in our school or even in some of our work.

First, the meaning of absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or obligation
without good reason. Generally, absenteeism is unplanned absences. Absenteeism has been viewed as
an indicator of poor individual performance, especially from the students.

The aim of this study is to know the other factors why student usually absent in school. In the
past few years the harvest season is the most common time were the students are usually absent because
they say that they are going to some farm to harvest. But this research will find out if what they say is real and
this will also show the other reasons why students are absent. This research will focus on Senior High Student
from Maligaya National High School.

In this research we will find out what you want to know and answer some of your question using this
research honestly.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework showed the flow of the research that will be discussed throughout
the study by the researchers. In some theories the say that absenteeism is a “withdrawal behavior, such
as tardiness and absenteeism, may also be volitical at times” (Hulin, 1991) and they also say that
absenteeism is staying away from school without a genuine or any reason for not attending classes.
That’s why we are here trying to prove some theories and extending knowledge about it. In column 1,
the researchers gathered the demographic profile of the respondents. Column 2 shows the process
conducted in the research such as survey interview or assessment checklist. Lastly, in column 3, the
researcher identified the real reasons and something that we want to know.

Significance of the study

This study will be beneficial or helpful to the following:

Student- Some students didn’t have a knowledge about this but this research study will help them to
know more and on how to avoid Absenteeism.

Teacher-This study will be beneficial to the teachers because this study can be used to help their
students to attend the class and so they can know the reasons why students are absent.

Parents- This study will give the parents some knowledge about this. If the parents know the reason
they can give their children an advice and so we can avoid absenteeism.

Researcher-This study will be a big help to the future researchers because they can use it as a guide on
their own research.

Future Generation- this study will be most significant and beneficial to the future generation because
they can have an easier study or something in the help of this study.
Scope and Delimitation

The respondent of this research study are Senior High School Students of Maligaya National
High School in Absenteeism during the Harvest Season in school year 2018-2019 on Maligaya Palayan
City, Nueva Ecija.

This study will focus on “MNHS Absenteeism among Senior High School during Harvest Season.

Definition of Terms

Absenteeism- is staying away from school without a genuine or any reason for not attending classes.

Demographic Profile- is a tool utilize by marketers so that they may be as efficient as possible without
advertising products or services and identifying.

Frequency Count- numbers of respondent.

Beneficial- producing good or helpful results or effects.

Truancy- a student who misses school without permission.

Harvest Season- the season when crops are gathered from the fields or the activity of gathering crops.

“RELATED STUDIES AND RELATED LITERATURE”

Related Literature

A major problem faced by schools across the country is student absenteeism. Although
the problem is pervasive in Filipino schools, the attention focused on this issue has been
inadequate. Poor student attendance has far reaching effects on the individual, the school, and
society in general. The intent of this paper is to document the problem, summarize existing
research on mediating factors, provide a summary of interventions for improving student
attendance rates in schools, and to offer specific suggestions for school psychologists. In
addition, specific attention is given to suggestions for future research to help expand the
current understanding of the causes and remediation of poor student attendance.

One major barrier to learning faced by students and teachers in Filipino schools today is a lack of
consistent attendance in classrooms. In fact, the United States Department of Education (1994) has
cited absenteeism as the most important factor linked to performance differences among students, and
absenteeism has recently been identified as being at crisis proportion (Kearney, 2003). Although many
schools realize the importance of this issue, educational researchers have not consistently given this
topic the attention it deserves (Corville-Smith, 1995). Additionally, while some attempts to increase
attendance rates have been successful, the methodologies used have had notable disadvantages
including cost, drainage of faculty resources, difficulty of implementation, or time consumption (DeKalb,
1999; Lamdin, 1996). Researchers have attacked this problem from a number of directions. For example,
interventions have been community-based (McPartland & Nettles, 1991; Reid & Bailey-Dempsey, 1995),
family- based (Copeland, Brown, & Hall, 1974; Volkman, 1996), and school-based (Gottfredson, Jones, &
Gore, 2002; Noonan & Thibeault, 1974). The intent of this paper is to summarize existing research on
improving attendance rates in schools and offer suggestions for school psychologists on how they can
become involved in formulating interventions to help schools deal with problems of attendance.

The literature related to predictors of chronic absenteeism and truancy has been grouped into
four broad categories in this review. First, research regarding student predictors of attendance is
presented. This discussion reflects the most developed research base and broadly explains the individual
characteristics that influence student attendance. Next, parent and family predictors are reviewed.
These factors have received increased attention in recent years but continue to be an area where more
research is needed. School-level predictors are discussed next. The discussion of school-level factors
includes structural, cultural, and social conditions in the school. These factors also relate to the physical
condition of the school. Finally, community predictors are discussed. Community-level predictors have
only recently received attention from researchers and are thus an area of research that requires further
elaboration.
The literature reviewed in this paper presents an extensive overview of previous research on the
topic of school absenteeism. However, there is a paucity of research emphasizing developmental and
contextual considerations (e.g., age, grade level, school type, and ethnicity). For example, mobility
among certain ethnic groups may indeed result in increased rates of absenteeism (e.g., migrant farm
workers). It is imperative that researchers in this area begin to examine specific demographic variables
and their influence on attendance in order to fully comprehend their impact on school attendance rates.
It is possible that interventions may be differentially effective based on these developmental and con-
textual considerations.

Future research should be directed not only toward developing effective interventions in the
schools, but also toward community-based approaches. With improved community-school relations and
improved community awareness of the benefits of education, it may be possible to improve attendance
rates from multiple vantage points. Effective programs based in schools and in communities have the
potential for improving not only attendance rates, but also known correlates of attendance rates and
long-term quality of life.

Regarding school-based behavioral approaches, future researchers should attempt to gain a


wide base of archival data from their target school. For example, it may be useful to determine specific
information regarding when the majority of absences are occurring during the school year. It would also
be important to know what proportion of children is contributing to the majority of absences. Additional
studies could also focus on collection of information about school policies on attendance across a
variety of schools. Rates of attendance could then be compared with these policies.

Archival information could be utilized to determine an optimal time during the school year to
implement the intervention, to determine whether the focus should be on many children or on several
chronic absentees, and to determine whether school policies are in any way impeding attendance. With
this information, more suitable interventions could be tailored toward schools in need.
Chapter III

“METHODOLOGY”

Research Method

This chapter explains the method used in gathering data this include the respondents and
sampling procedure, the data gathering instruments and the statistical treatment used to analyze and
interpret the results of the study.

Research Design

The researchers utilized descriptive method of research. The descriptive method describes and
interprets phenomenon, a situation, or an event will be used to describe the respondents. Jackson S.L
(2009) stated that descriptive research method describes the situation. To create a valid descriptive
research, a group data or more is meticulously organized, grouping the data in an understandable
format.

It is the method used for this study since the researchers wishes to determine the relationship
of the absenteeism and the harvest season on the senior high school students.

The Participants of the Study

The participants of the study were 20 out of ### students in senior high school of Maligaya
National High School who were enrolled during the school year 2018-2019. The students were randomly
selected. Table 1 represents the breakdown of the sample.

Instrument

The survey questionnaire that we used is to show every data that we need in this research
study. The questions are being asked to the Senior High School students of Maligaya National High
School.

Data Collection

The researchers personally administered the asking of questions to the participants. The
researchers prepared a cover letter to explain the purpose of the study to the respondents.

Data gathered from the respondents were checked, tabulated and analyzed according to the
research design described in this chapter using the statistical treatment.

Data Analysis

The researcher must do the tally and get the percent to summarize the data of the study.

classes in your study?” Nearly 95% of respondents answered yes and 5% of respondents answered no.
Chapter V

“SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RCOMMENDATION”

This chapter presents the summarize data with the conclusions that arises from the data
gathered. This chapter will also impart the recommendations that could be followed by other
researchers.

Summary of Data

This research study is focused only in the absenteeism of random senior high students of
Maligaya National High School. Based on the data gathered were almost all the question is all about the
absenteeism, we discuss some of the thing that affects the student’s behavior that’s why they are
skipping classes. On the first table we see that almost half of them answered yes but on the next table
they also said that harvest season is not the reason why they misses the class. The table 3 discuss if they
are absent because of playing online games and only 30% of them answered yes. They also said that
almost 65% of their parents know that they are absent during that period of time and almost 95% of
them answered yes, they know the effect of missing classes in their study but some of this still absent in
class because of their own reasons.

Conclusion

After analyzing and interpreting the data on the survey questionnaire, we came to the
conclusion that almost all of the students that answer the questionnaire said that they didn’t absent
because of the harvest season. They said that they are skipping classes because of other reasons like
playing online games and etc… They also said that their parents know what they are doing. Almost all of
them answer yes they know the effect of skipping classes in their grades. So we therefore conclude that
there is no connection between absenteeism and harvest season and the students have their own
reasons why they are absent during that period of time.

Recommendation

Since we have the data, findings and conclusions presented the following recommendations
were made.

1. Parents and teacher should guide and monitor the students so we can avoid absenteeism.

2. There should be cooperation between school, parents and the Barangay or authorities in that certain
place to see if students are skipping classes.

3. Schools should arrange a seminar/counseling to the students and parents to know more about this
problem and also to avoid absenteeism.
