Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

This year, the Philippines is dealing with the contagious Covid-19 pandemic

which has also affected the country’s economy, all the school’s sectors, and student’s

education. This pandemic made us stay home where even our studies and school works are

held at home. The pandemic also resulted in a change from face – to – face to online

learning, a method of learning in which students and teachers communicate with one

another via the internet and other online platform such as social media. This resulted in a

number of changes from what students encountered in regular classes.

During this new normal of learning, there are many factors that affect the

academic performance of Senior High School (SHS) students specifically this time of

Covid-19 Pandemic. Since the pandemic started last January 2020 most of the family's

sources of income were stopped and because of that some of the students weren't able to

afford good quality gadgets and internet connectivity. Reported that most studies focus on

the three elements factors that intervene the academic performance of the students, that is,

parents (family causal factors), teachers (academic causal factors), and students (personal

causal factors), though the influence on academic performance varies from one academic

environment to another, from one set of students to the next, and indeed from one cultural

setting to another (Diaz 2003).

In a study by Hussain (2006), The students who are properly guided by their

parents have performed well in the exams. The guidance from the teacher also affects the

student's performance. The guidance from the parents and the teachers indirectly affects

the performance of the students. Amitav Raychaudhuri (July 2010), found that numerous

studies have been done to identify those factors which are affecting students’ academic

performance. The student's academic performance depends on a number of socio-economic

factors like students’ attendance in the class, family income, mother’s and father’s

education, teacher-student ratio, presence of a trained teacher in school, sex of the student,

and distance of schools. Besides that, they observed that there is a negative relationship

between family income and students’ performance (Hijaz and Naqvi 2006).

The researchers conducted this study to identify students’ factors that affect the

academic performances of students who are currently learning virtually during this pandemic. Also,

this can be used as a guide by teachers, parents, and other students. Also, to know how factors

affect their academic performance, and for this research guide them in their study so that in case

they encounter such a factor they already know what to do while taking virtual classes during this

time of Covid-19 pandemic.
