3.3.1. data Input in database fields

The input masks have fields and areas where data input is not possible. In principle, all characters that can
be displayed may be entered in these areas.

If you press a key of the keyboard representing a character that can be displayed either the corresponding
character is displayed at the current cursor position or - if it is an inaccessible area - the cursor is first
placed in the next input field that is accessible.
After the character has been displayed, the cursor moves to the next position within the data window that
can be written to.

3.3.3. data Window Types

Most “Data Windows” are used to input or modify data of the various databases in the system. Data
windows used for data manipulation have command buttons.

3.3.4. data Concept

A record consists of filght data STM, FLNR, EST, ATT, CITY, VIA1, BEL1, NAT, MAST, CFN1, TERM, etc. A
logical record in the system that can be edited via a data window is explicit definable by a so-called key
that consists of one or more fields. For example, the key for a record of the current flight plan consists of
the scheduled time, the carrier and the flight number, whereby the scheduled time is the higher-order field
in the key. All fields of the key are „mandatory“, i.e. in order to add a record to the file, all fields of the key
must be filled.

Functions
After a function has been selected from the menu and the appropriate data window is displayed, the data
of the file that are assigned to this data window may be edited by means of the following functions. These
functions are: modifications (UPDATE), insertions (INSERT) and deletions (DELETE) of records. The function
is selected by means of the buttons provided in the appropriate menus.
Update. If a record is to be edited, the fields of the record must be modified as desired. Care must be
taken that no key fields are modified because this would address a different or an invalid record. Clicking
the mouse or confirming the function by pressing transfers the data to the FIDS for processing.
Insert. If a new record is to be added, it is prompted in the editing window. It is both possible - to input
a new record and to overwrite an existing one, accepting data from it, if required. In this context it is
important that entering its key explicit identifies the record. This is important because duplicate keys are
generally not allowed and the record would be rejected. Clicking the mouse or confirming the function by
pressing transfers the data to the FIDS for processing.
Delete. This function deletes the selected record.
Simply modifying the data within the data window has no effect; it may be canceled any time. Only
activation of the function by pressing the appropriate button executes the data transfer to the FIDS.
Depending on the functions and field types, the system first carries out some standard checks. Only if all
functions initiated in the data window are completely plausible and consistent they will be executed and
subsequent actions are started, if required.
After the functions have been processed, a so-called „redisplay“ of the data occurs. Generally, the
display begins with the lowest key displayed prior to editing, or if it no longer exists, the next higher one
is displayed. Insertion and deletion are taken into account. If the first record was deleted, display will start
with the next higher one. If a record is added that is lower that the formerly lowest one, redisplay will start
with the new record, etc.
All data windows can be scrolled if the file that is edited therein contains several records. Scrolling is
possible in both directions using the forwardkey and reversekey. If scrolling in a direction is no longer
possible, an appropriate message is displayed.

3.3.5. Field Types

All records within the system consist of one or more key fields, which explicit identify the record and its data
fields. Fields are of various types, which have different plausibilities (validity checks) dependent on its type.
Some of the variations are as follows:
Alphanumeric fields
any character may be entered in these fields. Leading blanks are eliminated.

Numeric fields
only positive numerical values can be entered in these fields. Leading zeroes are deleted.

DataManager_1.0028_rev00 Page 11
MAIN WINdoW

Lookup table fields

these fields contain the key of a lookup table record. As a rule, the key is converted into capital letters. A
comparison to the appropriate lookup table is made. If the key is not found there, the contents are rejected.
In these fields, data input is supported via selection windows that can be activated by clicking the right-
hand mouse button.
Time fields
Time fields expect a time in the format HHMM, i.e. 1045 for 10 hours 45 minutes. Valid times are 0000
to 2359 (24-hour format). „*“ is also accepted for the current time, including a minute offset, e.g. „*+35“
or „*-120“. For example, if a flight is delayed by 25 minutes, this may be entered conveniently by typing
„*+25“ in the appropriate time field.

3.3.6. Plausibility
When data are transferred to the FIDS, the system will carry out the configured plausibility (validity) checks.
First the contents of mandatory fields are checked. This includes the key fields, which may not be empty.
Then, the formats of the fields are checked according to the field type, for example whether a numeric field
contains a valid numerical value.
If an error found is directly related to a field, the cursor is placed in the faulty field. The entry may then be
corrected and the data is re-transmitted to the FIDS. If the FIDS finds additional errors, this procedure is
repeated.
If the error is not directly related to a field but to the record as such, the cursor is placed in the first field of
the record. For example, it would be an error if a record to be deleted cannot be found by the system by
means of the information given in the key fields.

3.3.7. data Window Positioning

The Data Manager connects the user to the FIDS, the application manages the positioning of the data
windows. All windows conventions are taken into account. The position of each window can be influenced
because the application remembers the last settings of the windows and uses them for further operations.

Figure 7…Example screen configuration

3.3.8. Editing in the data Window

Selected row

Selected field

Normal Edit Fields

Edit Fields with lookup function
The “Data Window” of the Data Manager is divided into 2 different parts. Normally all data records are
displayed in a horizontal arrangement (called multiline). For more comfort and to make editing of large
fields easier some grids are arranged in a vertical arrangement (single record).
To activate the editing mode just move the mouse to the field you wish to change and press twice the
second mouse button in the field a blinking cursor appears.

You can also activate the editing mode by pressing the F2 key or type some letters or numbers on the
keyboard if the selected field is focused. You can move from one field to another with the cursor keys or the
key ( -key and -key for reverse)

3.3.8.1. Lookup Function

Figure 8…Lookup table

The lookup function

helps the user get codes
for airports, natures, file
names, etc.
With the mouse focus in a
recatangle press the first
mouse button to activate the
Lookup Table or press the
F9 key.
Once the lookup function is
activated, a new window
appears on the screen that
shows all available codes
from the system for this
field. For example if the user
is in the ‘CITY’ or ‘VIA’ field
in the editing mode and
presses the F9 key, the airports lookup function is activated:
In this example the ‘CITY’ or ‘VIA’ field already contains the entry ‘KIX’. Therefore ‘KIX’ is shown and
selected in the lookup window. The columns show you the additional fields for this lookup table and this
cannot be changed here. If there are more entries in the lookup function window the user will get a
scrollbar on the right side of the window. Once the user has selected the code (a double click on the line
with mouse or by pressing the F9 key on the keyboard) can choose this entry.

DataManager_1.0028_rev00 Page 13
MAIN WINdoW

After this the window disappears and the selected entry is now in the edit field of the grid. This
information has not been sent to the server at this time.
To activate the changes the user has to press the Enter key to make an update to the database on the server.
If there are new entries in the lookup table, for example a new airport, and the administrator has already
added this code via the menu ‘Lookups’, the user cannot find this entry in the edit field lookup function. To
get this new entry the user will have to reload the table from the server by pressing the ‘Reload Data’ button
on the lower left side. After a few seconds the display will be refreshed and all new lookup table entries are
inserted.

3.3.9. data Window Configuration and Selections

Figure 9…Editing the actual flight plan

The main menu item „Arrival” or „Departure“ is used to access all records from the actual database. Open
for instance the Arrivals window the most fields like the “STM” scheduled time or “EST” estimated time and
so on, some fields have dependencies on others fields and can only be changed directly. The most flight
records will be updated from an external system like an AODB.
Choose Flights
Settings of various types affecting the show sequence of display, record selection, etc., can be made in the
Choose Flights window. When all settings have been made, selecting the „Enter” Key button will initiate the
data transfer process to the FIDS. The data window is opened according to the selection made in the sub-
menu window and the appropriate flight data is displayed.
Time
Figure 10…Window „Choose flights“ - Time settings

Flight data can be sorted by time in different ways for display

purposes. These are: scheduled time, expected time and actual
time. The switch item has the default setting „scheduled time“.
Selecting the sort type and pressing thekey or using the left
mouse button allows you to modify the time sequence of the
flight display. The selected sequence in time for the flight data
is „active“ until a new sequence is selected. Details of the time
sequences are as follows:

Scheduled time:
If scheduled time is selected, all records are sorted according to the scheduled arrival and departure times.
If times are identical, further sorting according to flight number occurs. The flight number is also part of the
access key along with the plan time. The following 3 example records are sorted according to scheduled
time.
Example:

Flight number Scheduled Expected Landed

LH332 2045 2200
AF4431 2100 2105 2105
SR332 2110 2055

Page 14 DataManager_1.0028_rev00
MAIN WINdoW

Expected time:
if the expected time is selected, all records are sorted according to the expected time of arrival or
departure. The sorting for this time sequence first considers the scheduled time. If a time is entered in the
field „expected time“, this time takes precedence over „scheduled time“ in the display sequence. In this
case, the above records would be sorted as follows:
Example:

Flight number Scheduled Expected Landed

AF4431 2100 2105 2105
SR332 2110 2055
LH332 2045 2200

Actual time:
If actual time is selected, all records are sorted according to the mechanism described under „expected
time“ if no „actual time“ is entered in the flight record (arrival time for arrivals). For example, if an arriving
flight has landed already, the „landed time“ takes absolute precedence over all other times; hence all
flights that have already arrived or departed will appear at the top of the display. The display then looks as
follows
Example:

Flight number Scheduled Expected Landed

SR332 2110 2055
AF4431 2100 2105 2105
LH332 2045 2200

Start Time
If a time in the format „HHMM“ is entered here, the display will begin with the next flight that has this or a
next higher time according to the time sequence selected.

Flight Number
The flight number is the lower-order key field of the current flight plan, i.e. output is always first sorted
according to the time sequence, flight numbers are sorted thereafter. In the input item „flight no.“ a
complete (e.g. SQ455 for Singapore Airlines flight SQ455) or a generic flight number (e.g. PR for the
next flight of Philippine Airlines) may be entered for the start of the display. The option of entering a flight
number for example enables the user to search for a specific flight and to have the display start with this
flight.

Selections
While the above parameter settings are used to either define the time sequence or the starting point of
the display, the input item „selection“ allows input of an expression, which allows you to limit the display
selection to specific flight records. If the user wishes to filter the display to flights assigned to gate 1 or 2
and which already have an „actual time“ assigned, the following expression would be input:
(GAT1=1|GAT1=2)&ATT
This limitation will be valid until the function is accessed from the main menu and the expression is
changed or deleted. This also means that a flight inserted with gate 3 and higher would not appear on
the display when redisplay occurs, because it is not included in the selection according to the „active“
parameter setting. The operation and syntax of expressions that can be entered in the „selection“ input item
is explained in detail in the chapter „Selection Filter“. The field identifiers that may be used are listed with
the explanations of the individual fields of the current flight plan.

Access to possible selection criteria is implemented using the right mouse button to facilitate user input.
For the field expression use the field name not the header name.

3.3.9.1. Selections Filter

The selection interpreter is a software module that evaluates a simple expression consisting of operands
(data fields) and operators (=, >,!=) for TRUE or FALSE. This interpreter becomes effective both during
user selections from the menu environment of the Data Manger and the Security Manager restriction in the
user ID file. System-internally, although in a much more complex form, it is used for display selection, field
connections, user plausibility’s, etc.
For instance an expression like:

(STM >1700) & (GAT1 = A3 | GAT2 = A4)

is used for a data record of a file. When the expression is correct, i.e. the data record has a scheduled
time “STM” greater then 1700 (5:00pm) and the gate „GAT1” is A3 or „GAT2” is A4, the data record is
„selected“. In the above mentioned expression, the operators „=“ are used for equality checking and „|“
is used for a logical „OR“ operation to combine the operands „Gate“ for gate field addressing and the
constants „A3“ and „A4“ to an expression.
The following operators may be used:
= Equal
!= Unequal
> Greater
>= Greater than or equal to
< Smaller
<= Smaller than or equal to
& Logic AND
| Logic OR
() Brackets
Like in arithmetic operations where multiplication and division have a higher weight than addition and
subtraction (point calculation before stroke calculation), the same rule applies here, i.e. „&“ operations
take precedence before „|“ operations. If uncertainty exists, the desired weighting sequence can be
enforced by means of brackets.

The fields of a data record that may be included in the expression as operands can be accessed via their
short names listed in the corresponding sections „Field descriptions“. Only fields of the following types may
be used:
TIME time fields (SSMM) or (SSMM+D in the Current flight plan)
DATE date fields (TTMMJJ)
ALPHA(NUM) fields with letters and/or numbers and special characters
NUMERIC numerical values
Besides, constants may be used for comparing the contents according to their field type. (EST>1045 e.g.
contains the constant „1045“ and the field short name for the expected time).

Leading and trailing blanks are usually ignored. If blanks or special characters which normally act as
operators shall be used within a constant, the expression is to be included in ‚“‘ (inverted commas) (e.g.
Dest = „ ABC „).
The operator ‚=‘ always acts generically, i.e. only the length of the specified constant is checked for
equality. (FN=A thus only checks the first digit of the flight number (FN) for an ‚A‘).

In the case of comparisons „greater than“ or „smaller than“, the sequence of characters (sorting) is in
accordance with the ASCII character set. Hence the numbers 0-9 have a lower weighting than letters.

When the expression has a syntax error or does not contain at least one reference to a field of the data

Page 16 DataManager_1.0028_rev00
MAIN WINdoW

record (field short designation), the expression is rejected with a message in the message line. INVALID
expressions e.g. are:
1. Gat1=
2. City=Hamburg|Gat1>
3. 1045>1000
The field short designations may be entered in upper case or lower-case letters. No difference is made
between the two formats.

Edit Filter
The „Edit Filter” dialogbox is a comfortable way to create filters.
The dialogbox can be opened by a double-click on right mouse button, or via the middle mouse button.
The cursor focused on the “Field” / “Headername” of the Data Window table.

4.1. FIdS

Figure 14…Menu „FIDS“

The main menu item marked „Fids“ has a sub-menu, which includes 2 functions that control the access and
contact to the FIDS. These functions are described in detail later.

4.1.1. Login / Logoff

Used to log the user in/out securely and setup for the next login
When the connection to the FIDS is established after the application has been started on the user terminal,
the login mask is automatically displayed on screen if the FIDS is „active“.

Input of the user ID and password now allows the user to access the Data Manager. Only after the user has
logged in successfully, the menu functions are available depending on the access rights.

When the user has been identified successfully, the login mask disappears and functions may be selected
and executed via the menu.
Figure 15…Login / Logoff

When a user is signed in, the Login / Logoff command

terminates the session. The data connection to the FIDS is
maintained and the login mask appears, so that another
user may log in. The „Login/Logoff “ function may also be
used to retain the login mask on screen, for example if it
was removed accidentally.

It is important to remember that, after the work on

the FIDS is concluded, this function is called, because
otherwise access to the functions that are accessible
to the logged-in user will still be possible. Only after
execution of this function all menu functions are inhibited,
so that no unauthorized individual will be able to work with the system. To prevent that risk an automaitcally
logoff time can be defined in the Security Manager.

4.1.2. Exit
Used to close the Application securely
This function terminates the connection to the FIDS as described earlier.
In addition, any user who may be logged in is internally logged out with the FIDS. This exits the application
and returns to Windows, so that the computer may be used for other purposes. Interruption of the
connection does not affect the FIDS.

4.7. Lookup tables

Figure 35…Menu „Lookups“

Lookup tables are primarily used to flexibly add data to other files, in particular to the current flight plan.
The second function is a plausibility check. For example, data fields of file records marked as lookup fields,
which thus have a reference to a specific lookup table, can be checked against it. This allows dynamic
determination whether or not input values are legal.
The main menu item „Lookups“ opens a sub-menu window listing the available lookup tables. When you
select a lookup table for editing, another window opens where the parameter inputs may be set for limiting
and/or controlling display and selection.
A lookup table has only one key field.
The tables are sorted alphanumerically and in ascending order.
If the user does not wish to start with the first and therefore lowest key in the table with reference to the
display, a generic key may be specified in the „key“ input item.
Fig.: Select_LOOKUP

For example, if the user enters a ‚K‘ here, the lookup

table display will start with the first record whose key
starts with a ‚K‘ or, if such a key does not exist, with the
next higher key. If no entry is made in the „key“ item, the
lookup table display will start with the first record.
In input item „selection“, the user may enter an expression
that limits the display selection to specific records.

The user is assisted via a selection window that is

activated by clicking the right mouse button. The syntax
and operation of the selection interpreter is explained in
detail in chapter „selections“.
For example, if the airport lookup table has been selected and the output needs to be limited to place
names starting with C, D, E or F, the following expression could be used:

NAM >= C & NAM <= F

This restriction is valid until it is either cancelled by calling the function from the menu again or by
changing or deleting the expression.

This also means that the airport record ‚Hong Kong‘ would not appear on the display when „redisplay“
occurs, because it is not selected by the „active“ selection.

DataManager_1.0028_rev00 Page 43
MENUbAR dETAILS

4.7.1. Remarks
Remarks are entered in the records of the current flight plan with 3- or 4-digit abbreviations (IATA/ICAO) in
a corresponding remark field. However, this code cannot normally be used for the various display media.
The „public remark“ lookup table exists so that supplemental information (e.g. long texts) can be added
and stored for each comment abbreviation.
In the field named “color” the specific display color of a remark can be specified. The user can see the
different color-codes if the right mouse button is pressed when the color field is selected, or if F9 is pressed
while the cursor is in the edit mode in a “color” field.
In the field “blink” the user can decide whether a remark should blink on the display or not, just enter any
character and the remark will be shown blinking on the public displays.

In the field “type” the user can decide whether a remark is only for a specific flight type available. If it is left
empty the user can use this remark for any kind of flight. If a ‘D’ is entered, only departure flights can have
this remark. (A for Arrivals and C for Check in)
In the field “Show Est” the user can decide whether a remark should also show the estimated/expected/
actual time of the flight together with the remark text.

Names of airports are entered in the fields „city” (origin/destination) and „via“ of the flight records only
with their 3-digit IATA code. However, this IATA code cannot be used for the various display media, in
particular the public displays.
The airport lookup table is provided to contain and store supplemental information to each code (for
example the English and the second language translation of the code to be displayed on the public
displays). The 4-digit ICAO code.

4.7.3. Airlines
Airlines are entered in the „CAR” Carrier field of the flight records with their 2 until 3-digit abbreviations.
This lookup table is required for input plausibility check of the „CAR“ field.

The airline lookup table is provided to contain and store supplemental information to each code (for
instance, the English and second language translation of the code to be displayed on the public displays.)
FLPC is the flap code of the airline.
