Abstract

In this modern era , English can be considered as a form of global language ,


which has been used by over 400 million people all over the world. Nowadays,
people used English both in their professional and daily activities. For instance,
activities between heads of countries are conducted in English.

Unlike common English language, the usage of English language on


legal fields, are quite different. One of the example of a profession that used
English in their jobs are lawyers, which this can be seen on their activities dealing
with different parties which may require them to use English as their language on
conducting their jobs. The usage of English language shall be referring as Legal
English; in which it has its own characteristic. Thus, to use it, it’s certainly not an
easy task, although most individuals are fluent in basic English, it is hard for them
to apply this language. It is common that Legal English to be known for its own
terminology and refers as “a language within a language”. Therefore, learning
Legal English are important for practitioners in order to practice and communicate
with their future clients and other parties that are relevant to their jobs. It is
inevitable that the needs to use professional English (Legal English) and its
relation to one’s job.

With the facts aforementioned, the Department of Career Development


and the Department of Education and Knowledge as a facilitator that
communicates information and educates students about materials related with
education and the development of Law Students of Universitas Indonesia for the
purpose of career prospects especially as a lawyer , and also things related with
their career succeeding university for every individuals within, we are going to

held an event called English For Lawyers 2018. The event will be conducted in a
workshop; which participants will receive the materials aforementioned. It also
targeted primarily to Law Students of Univesitas Indonesia.

We hope that the English For Lawyers 2018 event can be beneficial for
participants; which it will answer questions and interest in order to support their
career in the future.

Terms of Reference
The workshop was structured around two main thematic areas which is divided into
two sessions as follows:

Day 1

Session 1

1. What is legal english?

2. What are the difference between english legal terms and regular english

3. How to educate about english legal terms? What are the sources?

4. What are the importances of using english language in legal profession?

Session 2
1. What is a contract? Mention types of contract!
2. How are the form of english contract? Is there any difference with
Indonesian contract?
3. How to increase english vocabulary that usually being use in contract
drafting?

4. Can you give example of english contract?
