Dear Review Committee,

I am Hamed Tabkhi, a faculty member of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department, University of
North Carolina Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). I am also the director of Transformative Computer Systems and
Architecture Research (TeCSAR) lab. It is my pleasure to write this recommendation letter for David Hoski, who is
currently a senior undergraduate student in TeCSAR lab, to obtain DAC Richard Newton Young Student Fellow
award.

I know David since Fall 2018 when he was an undergraduate student in my computer architecture class. David is
also my student in “Real-time AI course”. In this course, David is building real-time deep learning solutions on top
of Xilinx Pynq platforms, to achieve high-performance high-accuracy object detection and classification with
considerably lower power consumption compared to existing commercial solutions. Overall, David undergraduate
performance has been impressive. He has a huge desire for learning and diverse interest in computer engineering
topic from programming languages, system-design, and hardware implementation. He belongs to the top 3% of our
undergraduate students.

Attending DAC conference, as the top venue in the design automation community, will provide additional
motivation for David. He will be introduced to the most recent research advances in design automation and
computer system design and will have the opportunity to get in contact with key researchers in the field.

I hope the review committee support David Hoski’s application for attending DAC 2019 through Richard Newton
Young Student Fellow award. I am aware that the award would be limited and only cover the expenses partially. If
his application is approved by the committee, I will match and cover the additional 50% of travel expenses from my
own grants.

Sincerely,

Hamed Tabkhi
