A. The old man walked straight to the tree. He bowed low, set down the bowl of milk, and
scattered the flowers around it. Then he pulled out a bamboo flute and, tripping around and around
the tree, softly pied a little ghost of a tune, very sad and monotonous, yet somehow frightening.
Frim the doorway, the boy and the goats watched him gravely. The tune finished, the old man
bowed low again, then walked out of the patio, closing the door behind him.
B. That night our friar kept vigil in the sacristy. Pacing the stone floor, he said his beads,
clinging to them as to something familiar and benevolent, a part of the known world, a weapon
against the nameless, ageless, meaningless horror outside. He had witnessed gain the little
ceremony around the tree. Pausing at the window, he looked into the now silent patio. A slip of
moon was abroad’ the dense tree let fall its light in silvers. Upon the pavement, the bowl shown
luminous and mocking.
C. Many people have fear of animals that have been tamed and do not know what to do when
they encounter wildlings. Of course, people are compassionate toward any animal that is injured, because
they have a deep sympathy for their pain and suffering. But many people do not have the knowledge
about rehabilitation of animals, or how to store them in good health. It is a difficult experience when a
person must restrain a sick animal from moving and try to immobilize it long enough for a veterinarian or
other trained person to give it treatment.

“You are very kind boy,” the butcher said. “How would you like to go back to school?”
“I like it very much,” answered Jay sadly, “But mother is sick and we have no money.”
The butcher nodded thoughtfully and then smiled at Jay. “You can go back to school if you like, “he
said.

as he scrutinized the passport application.
“Of course, she is going with me,” the woman said.
“I was born here,” the girl spoke tensely. “I am an American citizen. I will not go with you.”
“Oh yes, you’re going Lucille. You’re a Filipino, we are going home.”
“I will not go,” the girl said desperately. “No, my mother can’t make me go.”
The mother stared at her child hurt and weary. She had spent hours telling her about
her homeland. She herself never stopped thinking of it. Rice fields, glistening in the sun, nice people
talking to each other. That was home she thought, unlike here, I feel like a stranger longing to
belong.
“This is not your country,” she told her again and again. But the stubborn girl would repeat,
“This is my home. I am an American citizen. I will go to my father, he will not send me away.”
