Lesson Idea Name: Is It Alive?

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: SKL1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how organisms
(alive and not alive) and non-living objects are grouped.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 – Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint and YouTube

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (Loti Level):

☒ Level 1: Awareness ☒ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

All of my students benefit through technology usage. Through this PowerPoint and converted movie, my
students are able to access the content through repetitive question and answering with pictures and a voice
over. This is extremely useful for students with attentiveness issues. Students are able to use this to manipulate
and with the addition of headphones, students can hear me pronounce the terms associated with living objects.

Lesson idea implementation:

This video is beneficial and very useful to review the standards. I would introduce the needs of living things
and then they would watch a video with Cookie Monster eating and interacting with living and non-living
items. Afterwards, students will do a picture sort (whole group) where they will sort the pictures of non-living
and living items and compare and contrast the items in each column. Then, the PowerPoint movie will
reinforce the picture sort, by having students reinforce the concepts of determining an object to be living.

To further their knowledge and implementation of the content, I would give students an iPad and have them
create their own video of non-living and living items that they find in the school and on the playground. The
students’ learning will be assessed by their ability to distinguish between non-living/living objects. As a whole
group, we will watch the videos made by the students and “test” our knowledge.

Reflective Practice:

To further extend my lesson, I could have my students complete a scavenger hunt where they find objects using
a QR Code reader on their iPads. In addition, their videos would be uploaded to their ClassDojo. In addition, I
could compile the videos together to serve as additional practice for the whole grade level and upload to
YouTube for others to view and use in their classroom.
