Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Second Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life
cycles of different living organisms.

Selected Technology Tool: Google Slides

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity enhances the learning experience for all students in the classroom by supporting students and
each of their needs. To address the first principle, representation, this activity will have verbal and written
instructions for students who require multiple ways of representing information. To represent the second
principle, action and expression, students are allowed to use any assistive technology of their choosing. To
represent the third principle, engagement, students are able to choose whether they work with a partner or
independently as well as choosing the organism they would like to research and make their Google Slide on.

Lesson idea implementation

The lesson will address the second-grade standard S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information about the life cycles of different living organisms. d. Develop models to illustrate the
unique and diverse life cycles of organisms other than humans. During this lesson, students will be
introduced to life cycles by watching a BrainPop video. I will then show students an example Google
Slide and allow them to choose the organism they would like to do their Google Slide on. This lesson
will take two class periods for students to complete. The teacher will place students in groups, unless
they choose to work independently. The teacher will walk around and assist students as needed, as
they create their Google Slide.
To extend this lesson to a higher learning lesson, students could do peer grading, meaning they
check their classmate’s Google Slide with a student friendly language rubric. Students will be
provided with feedback as the teacher walks around assisting them with their Google Slide. They will

also receive verbal feedback after their final presentation. Students will upload their Google Slide to
our class website that will feature assignments we do each week. This lesson will be concluded by
each student presenting their PowerPoint to the class.

Reflective Practice:
These activities could impact student learning by encouraging students to collaborate with one another and
using technology to improve and enhance their work. To extend this lesson, students could use Adobe Spark
to make a video that represents the life cycle of the organism they chose. They would be able to narrate it as
well as add animated videos to represent the organism’s life cycle.
