FOREWORD
Dear JEE Advanced Aspirants,

Registration for JEE Advanced entrance exam begins in the first week of
May, while the admit card is made available from the second week of May.
The entrance exam is held in the third week of May. After the examination,
the answer key of JEE Advanced is released and then result is announced.
Post result announcement, as per the All India Ranks of the candidates,
seats are allotted to qualifying candidates through JoSAA. Around 50,000
candidates qualify for IIT admission in JEE Advanced for around 11,000

INTRODUCTION TO JEE ADVANCED

JEE Advanced was conducted in offline mode till 2017. However, 2018 is the
year when the entrance examination is being conducted in online mode. JEE
Advanced is the second stage examination of the JEE system for admission
to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). In order to take JEE Advanced,
aspiring candidates have to first take JEE Main and qualify in it. Over the
years, the number of top JEE Main candidates being considered eligible for
appearing in JEE Advanced has been increasing. In 2015, only 1,50,000 top
JEE Main candidates were eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced, while in
2016, top 2,00,000 candidates from JEE Main could sit for JEE Advanced
and in 2017, this capping was further raised to 2,20,000 top candidates from
JEE Main. In 2018, the authorities have added 4,000 more candidates to
this capping, making it 2,24,000. Besides the increase in number of quali-
fying candidates from JEE Main to JEE Advanced, the number of IITs and
the seats available across the IITs have also seen a surge. With IITs being
considered the most prestigious institutions in the country, at present, there
are a total of 23 IITs offering around 11,000 B.Tech seats.

Top 2,24,000 candidates from JEE Main are filtered for appearing in JEE
Advanced. All NITs, IIITs and CFTIs collectively offer over 25,250 under-
graduate engineering seats to candidates through JEE Main. Admission to
NITs, IIITs and CFTIs through JEE Main is offered through common counsel-
ling conducted by JoSAA.

WHAT’S NEW IN JEE ADVANCED?

JEE Advanced is being held completely in online mode from the academic
year 2018-19.

The horizontal reservation for PwD candidates in each category for admis-
sion has been increased to 5% from 3%. Category-wise distribution of
candidates for seats has been changed from 2018.

HOW TO CRACK JEE ADVANCED?
JEE Advanced is considered to be the toughest
engineering entrance examination in India. It may
be tough but not impossible. If you are determined
to get through the IITs by cracking JEE Advanced,
then believe me, you can do it. But if you follow
some of the tips and incorporate some important
elements in your preparation, then the possibility
of cracking the entrance exam goes higher. If your
preparation is planned strategically, as per the time
you have, you are certainly going to qualify in JEE
Advanced. Before thinking, about JEE Advanced,
you must know that you need to qualify JEE Main
and secure yourself a place in the top 2,24,000
candidates who are filtered from JEE Main to
take JEE Advanced. You can not appear in JEE
Advanced directly. First, you need to appear in JEE
Main and qualify it being being in the top 2,24,000
candidates, then you will be able to appear in JEE
Advanced. This means that you have to complete
with around 12 lakh candidates in JEE Main and
secure a place for yourself in the top 2,24,000.
Read through the tips below to know how to pre-
pare for JEE Advanced.
1. Go through the syllabus of JEE Main and JEE
Advanced well and do not leave anything from
the syllabus. This means that you have to com-
plete the syllabus (all topics/units) of JEE Main
and JEE Advanced. Though JEE Advanced is
tougher than JEE Main, but the syllabus of JEE
Main and JEE Advanced have many concepts
in common.
2. Exam pattern of JEE Advanced is not fixed. It

keeps on changing every year and IITs do not
release the exam pattern. But you can check
last year’s exam pattern to get an idea abut the
types of questions and marking scheme.
3. Divide your syllabus as per the time you have for
preparation. The early your start, the better you
can can perform in the exam. Plan to complete
the syllabus in a way that you have ample time
for revision.
4. During the preparation, make short notes to
remember formulae, etc.
5. Keep some dedicated hours of study everyday.
6. Strengthen your basic concepts in a way that
those concepts can be put to use to solve some
daily life problem. Theoretical study/preparation
will not help you.
7. NCERT books are good resources for JEE Main
and JEE Advanced.
8. Take lot of mock tests and solve sample papers
and previous years question papers of JEE
Advanced. At least last 10 years of question
papers are important to practise.
9. Build speed and accuracy in solving the ques-
tions.
11. Do not study from any book and all books. Use

The eligibility criteria of JEE Advanced refers to all Category-Wise Distribution of Top
eligibility conditions which aspirants must fulfil in 2,24,000 Candidates

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria

Main
Aspiring candidates need to qualify JEE Main and
should be among the top 2,24,000 (including all
categories) candidates who qualify to appear in
JEE Advanced.
The table below carries the order which will be fol-
lowed while selecting the top 2,24,000 candidates
in various categories.

To appear in JEE Advanced, General category
candidates must not exceed the age of 25 years on
October 1 of the admission year, while SC/ST/PwD
category candidates should not be more than 30
years on October 1 of the admission year.

Candidates can take JEE Advanced a maximum of
two times in consecutive years.
JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria
related to Appearance in 10+2
(or equivalent) Examination
Aspiring candidates are required to have appeared
for 10+2 (or equivalent) examination for the first
time in either the preceding year of the admis-
sion year or in the same year of the admission
year. However, those candidates whose 10+2 (or
equivalent) examination results for the academic
session the year before the preceding year of
admission year were declared after June of the
next year will also be eligible for JEE Advanced.
JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria
related to Earlier Admission at IITs
Candidates should not have been admitted in any
IIT irrespective of whether they continued in the
programme or not. IIT seat should also not have
been accepted by the candidate in the past by
reporting at the reporting centre. Those candidates
whose admissions at IITs were cancelled will also
not be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
Those candidates who have been admitted to a
preparatory course in any IIT for the first time in the
previous year of the admission year are eligible to
appear in JEE Advanced. The admission authori-
ties will also term those candidates who paid the
seat acceptance fee but did not accept the seats
(by not reporting at the reporting centres in the
previous year of the admission year) are eligible.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria
related to Performance in 10+2th
Standard (or equivalent) Board
Examination
You have to satisfy at least one of the following two
criteria for admission to IITs:
Should have scored atleast 75% aggregate marks
in 10+2th standard (or equivalent) board examina-
tion. For SC/ ST and PwD candidates, the aggre-
gate marks should be atleast 65%.
OR
The candidates should be within the category
wise top 20 percentile of the respective class 12th
standard (or equivalent) board examination.
The marks secured in the following five subjects
will be considered for calculating the aggregate
marks and the cut off marks for fulfilling the top 20
percentile criterion:
●● Physics
●● Chemistry
●● Mathematics
●● A language (if the candidate has taken more than one
language, then the language with the higher marks
will be considered)
●● Any subject other than the above four (the subject
with the highest marks will be considered)
Calculation of Total Marks
●● For calculation of the total marks for five subjects, if
the marks awarded in a subject is not out of 100, then
the marks will be scaled (up or down) to 100 so that
the total aggregate marks is out of 500.

●● If a Board awards only letter grades without provid-
ing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade
sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from
the Board specifying the equivalent marks and submit
it at the time of acceptance of the allocated seat. In
case such a certificate is not provided, then the deci-
sion taken by the Joint Implementation Committee of
JEE (Advanced) will be final.
●● In case any of the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Math-
ematics and Language are not evaluated in the first
year (e.g., in a 3 year diploma course), then the marks
for the same subject from the previous year/s will be
used for calculating percentage of aggregate marks.
●● For those candidates who appeared in 10+2 (or
equivalent) Board examination in the year before the
preceding year of admission year but reappeared the
next year, then the best of the two performances will
be considered.
●● If a Board gives aggregate marks considering both
11th and 12th standard examinations (in the 10+2
system), then only 12th standard marks will be con-
sidered. If a Board gives aggregate marks consider-
ing the results of all three years of a 3 year diploma,
then only the marks scored in the final year will be
considered. Similarly, for Boards which follows a
semester system, the marks scored in the final two
semesters will be considered.
●● If a Board does not give marks scored in individual
subjects but gives only the aggregate marks, then
the aggregate marks given by the Board will be con-
sidered as such.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria
Regarding Cutoff Marks for the
Top 20 Percentile
●● Category cutoff marks for the top 20 percentile will
be calculated based on the marks scored by all the
“successful” candidates in their respective boards in
the particular year.
●● Cutoff marks for PwD candidates will be the same as
the lowest of the cutoff marks for General, OBC-NCL,
SC and ST categories.
●● Top 20 percentile cutoff for the admission year will
be considered for the candidates who qualify 12th
standard examination in the same year.
●● If a candidate passes 12th standard in a particular
year but writes one or a few subjects the next year
for improvement, then top 20 percentile cutoff for
the previous year will be considered. However, if a
candidate writes all the subjects in the next year, then
the best of the two performances will be considered.
●● In case a Board fails to provide information about the
top 20 percentile cutoff, then the candidates will have
to produce a certificate from the respective Board
stating that he/she falls within the top 20 percentile. If
the candidate fails to do so then his/her CBSE cutoff
marks will be used.
JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria
Regarding Aggregate Marks of
75% (or 65% for SC, ST, PwD)
The marks secured in 12th standard (or equivalent)
board examination of a particular academic year
will be considered for candidates who qualify the
12th standard exam in the same year.

If a candidate qualified 12th standard (or equiva-
lent) examination in a particular year but writes any
of the required subject in the next year for improve-
ment or any other reason, then the aggregate
percentage will be calculated by considering the
maximum marks obtained in the required subjects.
However, female candidates will be allotted seats
in the course of Mining Engineering or Mining
Machinery Engineering related courses at IIT (ISM),
IIT Kharagpur and IIT (BHU).

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria

Regarding Additional Requirements
for Certain Courses
The candidates should not suffer from any form
of colour blindness if they wish to opt for Mining
Engineering, Mining Machinery Engineering, Inte-
grated M.Sc program in Geology or Geophysics,
or Petroleum Engineering should not have any
form of colour blindness. A medical certificate has
to be provided for the same. IITs may constitute a
medical board to test the validity to the candidate’s
medical condition.

For the candidates seeking admission to Mining

Engineering, the standards of visual acuity with or
without glasses has to be strictly adhered as per
DGMS Circular 14 of 1972. Persons with one eyed
vision will not be allowed to work underground.

Restriction in Mining Engineering

According to Section 45 (1) of the Mines Act, 1952,
no woman is allowed to work underground and in
mines. The act states that:

“No woman shall, notwithstanding anything con-

tained in any other law, be employed

(a) in any part of a mine which is below ground

(b) in any mine above ground expect between 6

AM to 7 PM”

●● Final examination of 10+2 system conducted by a Central or State Board
recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

the National Defence Academy.
●● Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Insti-
tute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.

eign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the AIU.
●● H.S.C vocational examination
●● Diploma recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education
(AICTE) or a State Board of Technical Education of at least 3 years dura-

There is no fix exam pattern of JEE Advanced and IITs do not release any exam pattern
of JEE Advanced. The exam pattern of JEE Advanced keeps on changing every year.

JEE ADVANCED ANSWER KEY
JEE Advanced answer key is released tentatively in
the first week of June. The official JEE Advanced
answer key is released separately for Paper I and
Paper II as per the different codes of the papers.
Some of the coaching institutes also release the
JEE Advanced answer key. Candidates are also
given a couple of days in June to raise/submit
their objections/feedback/comments. The opti-
cal response sheets of the candidates are also
released or sent to candidates registered email IDs
before the release of the JEE Advanced answer

JEE ADVANCED COUNSELLING
AND SEAT ALLOTMENT
The counselling and seat allotment for JEE
Advanced is conducted by Joint Seat Allocation
Authority (JoSAA). JoSAA determines how many
rounds of counselling and seat allotment for JEE
Advanced are conducted. In 2017, the counselling
was held in 7 rounds, while in 2016 the counsel-
ling and seat allotment was held in 4 rounds. The
counselling and seat allotment of JEE Advanced
includes registration and choice filling, choice
locking, seat allotment, reporting to allotted col-
leges and getting provisional admission in the
allotted colleges.
Eligibility for JEE Advanced
Counselling and Seat Allotment
To participate in JEE Advanced counselling, can-
didates have to secure an acceptable rank in JEE
Advanced. You must have secured a minimum of
75% aggregate marks in class 12th or equivalent
exam. Candidates from SC, ST and PwD catego-
ries, must have scored 65% aggregate marks.
OR
Candidates should be in the top 20 percentile in
their respective class 12th or equivalent board
exam.
Procedure of JEE Advanced
Counselling and Seat Allotment
Stage 1 – JEE Advanced Online JoSAA Reg-
istration
To register, you have to enter the following details

on registration portal:
●● JEE Advanced Roll Number (as in JEE Advanced
Admit Card)
●● JEE Advanced Registration Number (as in JEE
Advanced Admit Card)
●● Date of Birth - (as in JEE Advanced Admit Card)
●● Password - (8 to 15 characters)
●● Click on confirm password
Important: The candidates must jot down User ID
(Registration Number) and password set by them
and generated by the system.
Stage 2 – JEE Advanced Online Choice Filling
●● During choice filling, candidates have to log in using
their User ID (Registration Number), JEE Advanced
Roll Number and Password.
●● Now, you have to fill the choices according to your
preferences of B.Tech branches and IITs.
●● You can make changes in terms of editing, reordering/
rearranging yur choices and add new choices till the
final locking.
●● It must be noted that candidates must lock their
choices before the deadline or otherwise their choic-
es will be locked by default. Candidates are advised
to select and lock as many choices as possible for
programmes.
●● JEE Advanced Counselling and Seat Allotment will
be held as per the All India Ranks (AIRs) of the can-
didates.

tion) verified. If the certificate is found unacceptable,
then such candidates will be considered as GE only
if their score in the Paper-1 of JEE Main is above the
declared cutoff.
●● To provisionally book/freeze the allotted seat, can-
didates must pay the required fee online. Further,
they have to report to the allotted institution with the
prescribed documents to claim their allotted seat and
to book it for the academic year.
