MUST or HAVE TO MUSTN’T or DON’T HAVE TO
We use MUST and HAVE TO to talk about
obligations. MUST usually expresses an internal
obligation and HAVE TO shows an external
obligation such as laws,regulations.
But please be careful in daily life both MUST and
HAVE TO can be used in the places of each other.
Look at the examples and try to identify usage
and meaning:
*I must shave because I don’t feel comfortable
with beard.
*I have to shave because if not, my boss will get
angry with me.
*You must get up early because it is good for your
health.
*You have to get up early because it is the rule of
our boarding school.
NOTE: Please don’t forget HAVE TO changes into
HAS TO with “he-she-it” pronouns.

We use MUSTN’T to talk about prohibitions
and it shows that doing something is illegal
or prohibited. On the other hand please be
careful DON’T/DOESN’T HAVE TO shows
lack of necessity. It means that you don’t
need to do something but if you want, you
can do it; there is no problem.
