ADVICE:
Should: You should eat healthy food. It’s good for you.
Shouldn’t: You shouldn’t stay up late. It’s bad for you.
SHOULD / SHOULDN´T

• Should is not as strong as must. We use it to give advice,


recommendations or suggestions
• Examples:
 You should take an umbrella with you.
 You should take warm clothes with you.
 I think we should go to bed early.
Shouldn’t :
Contraction of should not

Example:
◊ She shouldn’t have to pay for everything.
 You shouldn’t smoke in front of the children.
SHOULD
I should eat more protein in order to be healthier.

You should take an umbrella with you because it is raining.


SHOULD

She should go to the doctor as quickly as possible.

I think my sister should apply for the job. She’s very smart.
SHOULD
I think you should apply for this job. You have all the certifications.

We should do exercises more often to be in good shape.


Examples:
1. You shouldn’t eat that dessert if you are sick.

2. She shouldn’t buy that dress, it’s too big for her.
SHOULDN’T
3. You look tired. You shouldn’t work so much.

4. He shouldn’t talk to his boss like that.

5. You shouldn't throw your litter onto the street.

6. We shouldn't leave without saying goodbye.

7. He shouldn't play with those wires if he doesn't know what he is doing.

8. Are you tired? You shouldn't work so much.

9. You shouldn't talk like that to your grandmother.

Notice how all of these sentences are about a recommendation or advice NOT to do something.

OBLIGATION and PROHIBITION


Must (Obligation): I must do my homework.
Mustn’t (Prohibition): You mustn’t walk on the grass in the park. It is forbidden.
MUST / MUSTN´T

Must is most commonly used to express certainty. It can


also be used to express necessity or strong
recommendation.
Examples:
 This must be the right answer.
 You must study hard .
MUST / MUSTN´T

must not = mustn’t can be used to express prohibitions.


Examples:
 You mustn’t kick the ball when you play basketball.

 I mustn’t eat during class.

We must eat healthily.

Everybody must speak English in class.

You mustn’t smoke in public places.

We must be responsible in order to achieve our goals.
