Advantages: The advantage of conducting this research is to know the effect of a
modern society to millennials like us, and also for the people to be aware of the
good and bad side of our new society, because as we all know the world is changing
and the teenagers are the one who will get affected soon.
Disadvantage: The disadvantage of this research is that we still don’t know even
today the exact extent of this generation and what will be the predicted outcome
of this generation towards the future and because of that we still don’t have a
major idea about what will be the motto of this generation.

CHAPTER 1: Introduction

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Our modern society nowadays change a lot. There are huge changes, like we are

so advanced in technology that it has become more uncontrolled and become

disaster. People are beginning to rely on technology for entertainment. Indeed, our

society has come a long way, from walking to cars, from writing to typing and so

forth, this progress increases every day and is becoming too much for our world to

handle. Society plays a big role in our life especially molding teen’s behavior,

attitude, personality and characters. It determines how they see other people, their

general outlook and their ethics. Now society comprises of a lot of different things

that include media, neighborhood, laws, and school. How does it affect in our

generation today? We influenced because of what happening our world, they

influence our mindset thus we become like this. The impact of media in teenagers.

Media has really expanded these days. Now it’s available in the form of films, TV,

video games, social networking etc. The millennials are getting older and being

more mature, the Generation Z is becoming a much more focus on the business

industry because of their determination of getting a job and getting paid.

The Generation Z, is the first generation to be “born digital”. They are known as the

most digital savvy generation that is transforming the world towards a digitalization

and challenging the traditional ways of doing things.

Generation Z plays a crucially important role in today’s business world they are

open-minded and social. The first major part of this thesis concentrates on

understanding Generation Z, its personality characteristics and consumer behavior.

Generation Z also known by a number of other names, is the demographic cohort

after the Millennials. There is no precise date for when Generation Z begins, but

demographers and researchers typically use the mid-1990s to mid-2000s as

starting birth years. There is little consensus regarding ending birth years. Most of

Generation Z have used the Internet since a young age and are comfortable with

technology and social media. This topic is heavily focused on Generation Z alone

because of their individuality and their vision to already existing entrepreneurs or

family business. Many employers are predicting that more teens, between the ages

of 16 and 18 will go straight into the work force, opting out of the traditional route

of higher education, and instead finishing school online, if at all. Generation Z

knows the true value of independence, and knowledge is no exception here. If a

Generation Z’s knows they are capable of learning something themselves, or

through a more efficient, non-traditional route, you can bet they’ll take the

opportunity. Generation Z’s were born social. In fact, nearly 92% of Generation Z

has a digital footprint. Arguably as a result of the celebrities and media they follow,

Generation Z seeks uniqueness in all walks of life primarily through the brands they

do business with, future employers, etc. Furthermore, Generation Z is more about

doing their own thing and valuing their abilities as an individual. Comparable to

grandparents Silent Generations and parents, Generation X. As of 2010 however,

Generation Z culture are rising, they are predicted to be more cautious, more

conservative and connected than ever with everyone around the globe. Despite the

trend of them conforming to the Postmodernism counterculture or "spoiled

culture". Generation Z's awareness will certainly derive them from the former

generation mindset. They will help shape the fragile 21st century (Though not

pioneer them like Generation Y) into a new understanding and approach of the

global society.

Statement of the problems

This statement intends to answer the following questions by teenagers aging to
15-16 years old:

1. Do you think that modern society affect the behavior of teenagers?

2. Do you think the status of our society is considered formal?
3. Do you think we are over depending on technology?
4. Do you still think that this generation is the hope of our Country?

Significance of the study

The main significance of the research is to know the effects of the modern society
to the Generation Z and what will be the outcome of this effects to the world.

Students. This study will help the students to be aware of their own behaviors and
philosophy of their fellow students.

School. This study will help the school to know their student’s opinions and how
will they act in a modern generation.

Researchers. This will help us to further understand the problem about the
Generation Z and what lies beyond the expectation of our fellow students regarding
to this kind of society and to give some insights that will benefit them on the future.

Future Researchers. This research will help the future researcher to conduct a new
research that is related to the Generation Z and will help them to have a
background about the effects of the modern society to this time.

Scope and Limitation

The study is descriptive as it seems and focused only on the Generations Z’s

meaning focusing only on Grade 10 Students. The research will be composed of

selected Grade 10 students undergoing with survey. The data will be gathered first

via survey on the majority of the Grade 10 students. This study will only limit on the

students of Infant Jesus Montessori Center and will not go on further research

beyond the school boundaries and will not undergo on surveying other students

from another school.

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Local Studies

According to Laura Shear a researcher that has studied the behavior and
characteristics of teenagers today and she quoted “Confident, self-possessed, and
frighteningly mature. These new kids are so impressive, so realistic, and so
confident. They’re making smart, pragmatic choices—about drugs, about sex,
about media, and about preparing for the future. It gives me great hope—and this
is a feeling that’s been in short supply of late—to think of this multicultural,
multiracial, tolerant and entrepreneurial generation coming of age, determined to
make an impact” (Laura Shear). To be honest I agree to the author, no matter how
many negative comments coming from the previous generation has said over and
over again, these teenagers are relatively smarter and think through everything in
advance (Well most of them at least) and always have a plan in the future. This
characteristic often fueled by highly self-directed personalities, a strong desire to
work for themselves and families, entrepreneurship, and designing their own
programs of study in college. A side-by-side comparison of Generation Y and
Generation Z throws their differences into sharp relief. Each is a product of coming

of age in a very different time, as a 2015 article in The New York Times explains:
“Millennials, after all, were raised during the boom times and relative peace of the
1990s, only to see their sunny world dashed by the September 11 attacks and two
economic crashes, in 2000 and 2008. There is a story of innocence lost. Generation
Z, by contrast, has had its eyes open from the beginning, coming along in the
aftermath of those cataclysms in the era of the war on terror and the Great
Recession.” As we can see the Generation Z is very aware of their position, they
know that they are not natural born entrepreneurs like the Generation X nor
Adventurous people like the Millennials. But they are the generation who wants to
be in the spotlights, who wants to make an impact, people who are eager to make
a name for themselves they know they have to improve and make a change so that
they can best the previous generations and that’s the scary part of this generation
everyone is not against each other but they will make a plan or idea that will try to
best the other individuals.

Foreign Literature

It’s too early to say with certainty how the views of this new generation will evolve.
Most have yet to reach voting age, and their outlook could be altered considerably
by changing national conditions, world events or technological innovations. Even

18

so, two new Pew Research Center surveys, one of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 and one
of adults ages 18 and older, provide some compelling clues about where they may
be headed and how their views could impact the nation’s political landscape.

The generations defined only about three-in-ten Generation Z’s and Millennials
(30% and 29%, respectively) approve of the way Donald Trump is handling his job
as president. This compares with 38% of Generation X’s, 43% of Boomers and 54%
of Silent’s. Similarly, while majorities in Generation Z and the Millennial Generation
say government should do more to solve problems, rather than that government is
doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals, Generation X’s and
Boomers are more evenly divided on this issue. For their part, most Silent would
like to see a less activist government.

When it comes to views on race, the two younger generations are more likely than
older generations to say that blacks are treated less fairly than whites in the United
States today. And they are much more likely than their elders to approve of NFL
players kneeling during the national anthem as a sign of protest.

The younger generations are also more accepting of some of the ways in which
American society is changing. Majorities among Generation Z and the Millennial
Generation say increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the U.S. is a good thing for
society, while older generations are less convinced of this. And they’re more likely

19

Email: Infantjesus_camella@yahoo.com

to have a positive view of interracial and same-sex marriage than their older
counterparts.

As a recent Pew Research Center report highlighted, Generation Z is the most

racially and ethnically diverse generation we have seen, but this isn’t all that’s
driving the attitudes of this generation when it comes to issues surrounding race
and diversity. There are significant, if more modest, generational differences on
these issues even among non-Hispanic whites.

According to Dr. Vickie S. Cook, Generation Z Is: Phigital. Generation Z is the first
generation to be born into a world where every physical aspect has a digital
equivalent. Accordingly, for its members the real and virtual world overlap. Hyper-
Custom. Generation Z people are obsessed with customizing, and they cannot see
why this should not be extended to job titles and career paths. More than half of
them would rather write their own job description than be given a generic one.
Realistic. As has been pointed out, Generation Z has been influenced by the
recession to feel lucky to have a job rather than to act as if the employer is lucky to
have them. With millennials starting to move into front-line management
positions, this difference in outlook will inevitably create tensions that will have to
be addressed. FOMO. Fittingly for a digital generation, Generation Z suffers terribly
from a fear of missing out on anything. The welcome aspect of this is that it means
they stay on top of trends and competition. But it also means that they will be
constantly worrying about whether they are moving forward fast enough or in the
right direction. DIY. Growing up with YouTube has convinced Generation Z that
20

Email: Infantjesus_camella@yahoo.com

they can do almost anything. Allied with this is a fierce independent streak that will
collide with the supposedly more collaborative instincts of the preceding
millennials. Driven. As we have seen, the combination of growing up in recession
and being told by parents that life is about winners and losers rather than just
participating has made Generation Z eager to get on with work. Many will enter the
workforce having already had side businesses, such as selling items on eBay, and
they will be competitive with each other.

According to Mayur Meghani this feeling to win and to prove themselves better
than others have forced them to learn new and new things. What is happening out
there is that, if a person gains information about a particular thing, then he just
starts giving his opinion on it without seeking much information on that topic.

When General masses of population gives their opinion without having complete
knowledge about a particular thing, then experts or individuals who know much on
that topic feel like the general masses are unaware of many things.

So yes, people are unaware of many different things. But we cannot say that
modern society is completely unaware of many things. They are much aware of
many things than they ever knew about, it’s just that they don’t have complete
knowledge about different things.

At Brand Boot Camp 2018, Acumen Strategy Consultants will share findings from
the first Filipino-focused research study into Generation Z titled “Growing Up
Generation Z: A Portrait of Filipino Teens Today.” Pauline Fermin, Managing
Director at Acumen Strategy Consultants, will present five key themes uncovered
by the research study providing a glimpse into the Generation Z psyche. From
unpacking their unique experience of adolescence to exploring their relationship
with brands, Pauline will paint a picture of who the Filipino Generation Z’s is in 2018
in addition to probing the differences and similarities between Generation Z and
Millennials.

Preliminary findings from the study already reveal that Generation Z differs from
Millennials in three key dimensions that shape their approach to the world: what
they seek in life, what they want others to see them as, and what goals they are
working towards. The study finds that while Millennials seek adventure and
experience, Generation Z goes one step further and pursues opportunities with
purpose and meaning. This is driven by Generation Z’s desire to be seen as valuable
and relevant to society while Millennials want others to see them as individually
unique and interesting. How they want to be seen is reflective of their greater goals
in life: Generation Z strives to make a social impact while Millennials are primarily
focused on realizing their own full potential.

Research Methodology
This chapter contains the research design, respondents of the study, research
instrument, ethical consideration, data-gathering procedure and analysis of data.

Research Design

This research used quantative design as the main data gathering tool. The
respondents were selected Grade 10 high school students selected from the Infant
Jesus Montessori Center in the division of Cabuyao City, School year 2018-2019.

Respondents of the study

The respondents of the study were Grade 10 students from Infant Jesus
Montessori Center, who are more aware of what is happening to our society.

The data instrument that we used is through survey. Grade 10 students were
focused on this survey about their thoughts and ideas about the modern society.

Data Gathering Procedure

In order to do this survey, we let them know that were doing this research and
informing them about the topic to be discussed. After seeking their permission and
willingness to participate, the survey will be given to them and they must answer it
honestly.

Ethical Consideration

The conduct of this research, the researchers asked for the consent of the Grade
10 students who were selected by the researchers. Their names will remain hidden
to the public. Like-wise the given references will be properly cited

Methodology

This chapter contains presentation, analysis and interpretation of the

result of the study. The data gathered were statistically tested,
analyzed and interpreted on specific study questions.

Questions: Yes No

1.Do you think that modern

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation
This chapter overseen the presentation, analysis and interpretation of data
gathered by the researchers. This study aims to determine the effects of the
modern society.

Total Percentage of grade 10 students:

4.Do you still think that this 19 11

generation is the hope of our
country?

Total Percentage 66.67% 33.33%

It can be gleaned in table that 66.67% of grade 10 students answered it yes

meanwhile 33.33% of grade 10 student answered it no. It’s proved to us that our

society today can affect the behaviors of teenagers thus we become like this, we

became more confident about something, we became optimist about our future

and we all think that we can do anything without doing any hardship. The rapid

increase of technology advancement is also double edge sword many students

think that we become too dependent on technology. But if we use technology, it

can help us to improve our overall lifestyle. Somehow and somewhat our society is

improving through time because of our technology.

CHAPTER 5
Conclusion, Solution and Recommendation

Conclusion:

The researchers learned more about that the Generation Z is more than

capable of just laying around with their phones and gadgets. They are far more

capable people than has the potential to change the future, they are evidently

mature at their own age, technology natives, and smart when it comes to business.

They are entrepreneurs and opportunity seekers and will find a way to get a job
29

during or after college because they believe that your first job is the first stepping

stone for your dream job. Yet, after all these positive reviews may be appealing and

good to hear, we cannot ignore that they are far more ignorant than any other

generation. They rely on technology too much and they think they cannot do

anything without it but when they do have the technology for themselves, they

think they know everything, they are far confident to themselves and will always

try to win and prove themselves better than one another just for the sake of being

better. This research also tells that Generation Z are based on generalization,

meaning they often just generalized topics without searching further it to know the

full details and because of that, many misunderstandings are popping out of

nowhere because of misinformation. The mature nature of generation z may also

be a potential problem, because of their independent mindset and thinking that

they will look like a mature person if they smoke, drink, or enter a romantic

relationship. Early pregnancy is proving one of the main problems of this

generation, because of this victim of rape and unwanted sex are increasing because

of the nature of the generation

Solution:

The researchers have come up with a solution that can potentially solve the

problem. Unity is a hard thing to achieve without the same mindsets and ideals that

will help us achieve the common goal. The problem with this generation is that

everyone has their own individual goal that will not benefit each other, we must

find an idea that will help us further from the future. It is hard to achieve but the

higher the risk the higher the reward, a true world peace and unity, the first utopian

society and the generation that will help the future generations to achieve this is

the Generation Z. The researchers believe that the people that are born in this

generation will help solve this problem this solution is not something that can be

logically think of, it is a solution that we don’t know what will be the outcome but

it is something to believe and we need people to trust so that this solution will not

be in vain. The problem within the modern society that has been affecting this
