As a more practical example of the equivalent spring constant for an elastic ele- ment, consider the cantilever beam loaded at its free end as shown in Figure 3.9. The deflection of the beam at the point of application of the force F is given by FL 4 = ser (3.52) where E is Young's modulus for the beam material and / is the moment of inertia of the beams cross-sectional area about the neutral axis. The equivalent stiffness for the beam is the ratio of the applied load to the deflection at the point of application of the load. ‘Thus, from Eq.
