In my opinion, Lou and Will committed a premoral evil. When an action normally
considered to be an objective moral wrong is done under objective mitigating circumstances that
serve as proportionate reason for the action to happen or take place, there is premoral evil or
wrong.
In Lou’s case, the means in her act of allowing Will to die is murder. The end is to
respect Will’s decision to end his life. Lou has committed an objective moral wrong freely and
consciously. At first, Lou was against Will committing euthanasia but in the end, she has decided
to go with Will’s decision. The objective mitigating circumstance in this case is the fact that the
euthanasia was with Will’s consent. It was committed after a period of 6 months within which
Will was given a chance by his parents to think about his decision.
In Will’s case, the means in his act of committing euthanasia is suicide. The end is to end
his suffering. Will has committed an objective moral wrong without full freedom or reflection in
his action. The subjective mitigating circumstance in this case is Will’s fear and anxiety
generated by deficiencies in life. Because of his physical disability, deciding for a fuller
experience of being is difficult. I think Will’s decision of ending his life is greatly influenced by
his anxiety which comes from the fact that he cannot do anymore all of the things that he used to
do.
