Understanding Metaphysics
Understanding Metaphysics
Introduction
When I began studying Metaphysics thirty years ago I had the luxury of
studying with the same teachers for many years. This is the ideal way to
approach the subject.
With today's busy schedules I find that my students often do not have the time
to attend classes on a scheduled basis. I found teaching the subject in bits and
pieces was not imparting what I wanted them to know. Thus these lessons
were born.
The subject matter is vast and it covers all aspects of life. Who are we? Why
are we here? What is our nature? All will be covered along with exercises
designed to be done alone or in groups.
As you explore the New Age you may find yourself confused by all of the many
different practices and pathways there are to follow. These lessons will give
you a base from which to operate as well as some basic training in developing
your own intuitive abilities so that you can make informed decisions.
It is my hope to assist you and make your journey a little less confusing. At the
same time I have had the privilege of studying with teachers from England and
Scotland and India and it is a joy to share their knowledge with you.
"When the student is ready the teacher appears." If these lessons feel right for
you, then the Universe has brought you to the "right" place.
Lesson 1
LET'S BEGIN
Anyone who picks up these lessons must in some way be searching. Because some kind
of an inner curiosity, or an inner pulling, attracted you to pick this up in the first place.
All I can do is share what I've learned over the years in my thirty-year intensive, study,
and activity in the world of metaphysics.
The fact that I have been involved in this journey for thirty years sometimes amazes
me. I was aware of the psychic, probably from the age of five or six. My family
described me as an imaginative child. I think I was a real trip for their Irish-Catholic
consciousness. They didn't know what to do with my stories and my imagination, as
they called it. And I didn't have any idea, at that age, that there was a separation
between the "real" world and the "spirit" world. I thought it was all one, I remember
1
that experience. And it was in my teens, I think, that I began to retreat from the psychic
world, because it was getting me in a lot of trouble.
But the one thing that it did for me was to build a strong sense of spirituality which I
expressed through a staunch devotion to Catholicism, until some major changes went
on in the Catholic church in the sixties.
Then I began my own search, which led me from Catholicism to Judaism, to Buddhism,
to Hinduism, with stops along the way in Spiritualism, and exploring back and forth
some of the same ones a couple of times. This led me to see that Truth is out there in
every form.
So the first thing that I would say to anybody who is picking up this, or any other
lesson, is that whatever you read, read it with an open mind and an open heart, and then
if it resonates, take it up and follow it religiously. And if it doesn't, let it down but don't
even say "Oh, no, that's wrong!", because I find that as my consciousness has evolved,
and my experiences have changed, I hold very different belief systems than I did even
ten years ago.
So since the consciousness is always evolving, maybe something that you put down
today will be something that you'll pick up five years from now. So I would say don't
judge it in a closing-door way. For spiritual evolvement, it's good to keep the energy
flowing.
In my own life, I found truth in everything: I had experience with the Guru; I studied
various religions and philosophies; I received information from spirit guides; I studied
under a prominent Spiritualist color therapist; I have channeled various Beings who
come in to teach. And I have found truth in everything I have experienced.
One thing that I can say to everyone for sure is that there are worlds beyond these, or
else I'm crazy! Because I see them, you know, I interact with them fairly easily. I don't
know why or how, but I do.
So you're searching, and there's a lot to know. I find, in my counseling, that a lot of my
clients are in a state of confusion, and would like to study metaphysics in some kind of
organized manner. And that's what I'm attempting to do here.
So the first thing that I would tell you if you were coming to me and asking me about
these things is this: The most important thing that you can say to yourself, over and
over and over, all day long, is "I am a soul, inhabiting this body. I am a soul,
experiencing the consciousness of this life. I am not this life, and I am not my body."
You are primarily and foremost a spiritual being. And we have had all kinds of
testimony to that in all kinds of teachings. But to sum it up in a nutshell: If you put your
spirituality, and your relationship to God, in whatever form you recognize that
relationship, first and foremost in your life, everything else will come into balance.
As I thought about how to go about teaching this course, my mind kept going back and
forth between "What do you want to do, Mary? Are you going to make this a spiritual
2
thing, or are you going to make this a psychic thing?" And I think it has to be both.
Because if you open up your psychic senses, it's going to put you in touch with the
spiritual realm. And if you are not seeking within yourself the highest realm that you
can reach, then you're going to open up to the lower realms, and that's no fun, believe
me! It can even be a frightening experience.
So as you enter the metaphysical realm, be aware that you are dealing with a reality, a
reality that can be more real than what you think is going on in your physical life. And I
think that fourth-dimensional consciousness, which is coming, is the reflection of us
really knowing that on a conscious level.
From my perception, it seems like it's a heartbeat away. But I know that many people,
even many old, old souls, are just waking up to that fact. And I have a theory about
that. My theory is that you light-workers will be needed, especially as we approach the
year 2000. You've been working on your own issues in your life. It's like the knowledge
of your mission in this lifetime has been purposely kept from you, so you could work
out whatever lessons you've needed to work out up until this point.
And now it's time to wake up and take your place as a light-worker, or a light-being,
and help to bring in this New Age in the highest consciousness possible.
You are a physical body, you are an emotional body, you are a mental body, and you
are a spiritual body. And all of those beings that you are interact with each other. And
sometimes they're not nice to each other, and they cause blockages. For example, the
emotional body sometimes will hurt the physical body and bring about disease. The
mental body sometimes hurts the emotional body, which then transfers down to the
physical. In other words, our bodies are all interconnected, and to heal on any one of
those levels, sends energy to all the levels, or to all the bodies. So it really doesn't
matter which direction your quest is taking you. There's no right or wrong way to heal,
you just follow your heart.
These bodies we're talking about are reflected around the physical body, extending
sometimes as much as three or four feet beyond the physical body, and they show up as
energy, light, color, movement, force.
Think about when an angry person comes into the room. Sometimes, if you don't notice
their entrance, for example, you're reading a magazine or something, it wouldn't take
you long to feel it, to look up and to know that something's there, something's
happening. Anger is one of the louder emotions, it's one of the easier ones to spot, but
every emotion has a vibration, it has a color, it has a tone, and it's either in harmony or
disharmony with the other emotions around it.
THE AURA
Emotions can be seen in the aura, the electromagnetic field permeating and surrounding
the physical body.
3
It's fairly easy to learn to see the aura. Most people can do it, and children, especially,
can see it. It's done by finding a place with indirect lighting, and a light, plain, colored
background. Sit a subject in a chair, facing front. Stare at the third eye of the that
person, the spot between the two eyes on the brow. And let your eyes get blurry, or
squinty.
I always tell my students, if they can remember when they were in school, like maybe
on a late Friday afternoon and the teacher was going on and on. And they needed to
look like they were paying attention, so they were staring at the teacher but thinking
about something else entirely. That's the consciousness it takes to see the aura.
Churches, lectures, things like that, those are easy places to see them.
But after a while, once you get used to seeing them, you can see them everywhere and
with any background. It just takes practice, that's all. It just takes practice. The problem
is most people try it once or twice and if they don't get results right away, they give up.
So if you're standing in line someplace, or sitting someplace, see if you can do it. And
if staring at a persons' third eye seems too direct and makes you uncomfortable(like if
you're in the supermarket line and you don't want to get assaulted or something!), you
can look at the earlobe and see it pretty much the same way on one side of the head.
So as you see these things yourself, it gives you a realization that we are more than just
the body.
And it's been my experience that that's where most people stop. You know, to say "Oh,
we have an aura!". People may be amazed to discover that they actually have an aura.
But what good is knowledge without applying it? One of the purposes of these lessons
is to teach you to apply your metaphysical knowledge in a safe, practical manner in
order to enhance your life.
THE CHAKRAS
Now where does this aura come from? The aura comes from seven centers, spiritual
centers located in our body, which are called chakras. The term chakra means wheel,
and chakras basically have two functions. They bring energy in and they move energy
out, much like a vacuum cleaner that can suck things in and blow out at different times.
And one of the fundamental things to know about chakras is that they govern different
areas of our life. For example, the root chakra, the first chakra, which is located at the
tailbone, responds to our energy about survival, and a lot of our feelings about survival
depend upon how clear that chakra is. We either think that there won't be enough or
we're confident that we will be taken care of. Because survival isn't just, you know, if
you're going to live or die, but also things like "Am I going to have a roof over my
head, will there be enough to eat, will there be enough money to have my basic needs
met?".
Another one may be "Will there be enough love to go around?" Scarcity and lack
issues, prosperity issues, resonate or respond to whatever is going on in the first chakra.
And the second chakra, the sacral chakra, which is in the genital area, has to do with
sexuality: How you view yourself as the sex that you born, whether you're comfortable
4
in that body, or if you're uncomfortable with it; How you view the opposite sex.
Because sexual energy can create life, it can create new sparks, new things.
And the new life that energy creates isn't always in the physical form. It can be in other
forms, as well. Our imagination, our creativity, our psychic awareness, all rest in the
second chakra. And the energy travels from one chakra to the other, and it is enhanced
or diminished by the openness of the chakra that it's passing through.
In other words, when the first chakra energy comes up to the second chakra, only as
much as can pass through the first chakra without being blocked will get to the second
chakra at all. And, of course, the second chakra, it there are any blocks there, that
energy is diminished. And if there are openings there, then that energy is enhanced as it
goes up to the third chakra.
The third chakra, the solar plexis chakra, has a lot to with trust, it has a lot to do with
flight or fight, control, it has a lot to do with how safe you feel in your world, how
much you trust the universe. This is where a lot of the energy gets blocked before it
goes to the fourth energy center, the heart chakra.
Let me give you an example of how the chakras affect the different bodies. At one time
in my life, I found myself alone, trying to raise five children as a single parent. And
very economically limited circumstances. I had a lot of fear about whether there would
be food on the table, or whether the rent would be paid. I was beginning, at that time, to
put my spiritual beliefs into action.
This opportunity came at a time in my life when I had been a student of metaphysical
thought, and I believed things like what we say and how we think create what's coming,
but I had never really applied it to my life. And for our very survival, I had to learn how
to do that quickly.
I believe that that problem created a tumor which appeared in my rectum. I was
working through this problem, practicing these principles and gaining on it, I think,
when this tumor was discovered and surgically removed. I saw that surgical removal of
it as all my fears encapsulated in that tumor and being removed from my body as an
opening up of that chakra.
So sometimes when a chakra opens on one level, something will happen in the physical
body to respond to it. It doesn't always mean major surgery. Sometimes it's just a
feeling or sensation as the energy passes through. People with third chakra blocks
sometimes experience bowel problems, or stomach distress. When someone upsets you
and makes you feel unsafe, and activate your trust issues, sometimes you get an upset
stomach over it.
So chakra disturbances can manifest in the physical body. Second chakra blocks, for
example, could end up being female problems, or problems with potency in the male. It
doesn't necessarily mean that it has to come out physically, if you work through the
energy; but oftentimes, it does manifest through the physical body, if there is a
blockage somewhere in the chakra system.
5
The chakras, when people talk about them, are often divided into the lower three, and
the upper four, as though the upper four chakras are superior in some way to the lower
three. And, indeed, I find that the clients I work with, especially those who are on an
intense spiritual path, often neglect the lower three chakras because they would rather
be dealing with the metaphysical or the spiritual world than the physical. It's important,
I think, to have balance, and I'll speak more of that later when I get into exercises to
help balance the chakras.
To continue with the explanation of the chakras, the heart chakra, the fourth chakra, has
to do with your loving feelings. It has two functions, to express love and to accept love.
Most people that I have met, with the exception of those whose chakras are closed on
both ends of that spectrum, have a more difficult time accepting love. There are a lot of
wonderful people in the world who can express love wonderfully to others, but because
life has bumped them around a little bit, they don't often bring that energy back in, or
accept it.
The next chakra, the throat chakra, also has two functions, that of speaking and that of
listening. And oftentimes, people who do not do one or the other will develop throat or
hearing problems. And it seems to me to be almost the opposite. In other words, people
who don't speak enough develop the throat problems, and people who don't listen
enough develop the hearing problems, almost as though the ears themselves are
lowering the decibel range and saying "You must listen more carefully".
The "Third Eye", or the brow chakra, is located at the point between the two eyes, on
the brow. And that is where the psychic energy rests. It's also aligned with the pituitary
gland in the physical body. But a lot of the psychic information is processed through
that, and indeed, even enters the bodies through that portal rather than the crown
chakra, which is the more spiritual.
The third eye is where many meditation teachers will teach you to focus your energy, to
take the breath to the third eye. It is where you house all of your connections with all
your other lives and all the lessons you've learned. It's all your recognition of the other
people that you come in contact with in life. It's all accessed through this chakra.
Again, the brow chakra has two functions: to project out your soul identity, and to bring
in the spiritual recognition of those you meet.
The crown chakra sits right on the top of the head. It's described in Eastern literature as
the "thousand-petalled lotus", because that is exactly what it resembles, like a giant
thousand-petalled water lily or flower, sitting right on top of our heads. It's depicted in
a lot of the Buddhist writings as a swelling in the head of the Buddha, right on top.
I recently received a statue from Costa Rica. The being, or the deity which it represents,
is called The Thinker, and again, the crown chakra is enlarged on this object. So the
chakras, or centers, are found in permanent artwork all over the globe, in places which
are not necessarily connected with each other. So there seems to be a universal
knowledge of where they're located, at least the major ones.
There are a lot of minor chakras as well. There's one over the spleen, there's two in the
bottom of the feet, there's one in each of the palms of the hands, there are little chakras
on every fingertip, etc. So we do have chakras all over the body.
6
But for the purpose of studying metaphysics, especially in early stages, learning the
functions and locations of the seven major ones is all you would need to do. I'll deal
more with the colors and tones of the chakras in a later lesson.
So what do you do with this knowledge? There's the aura, there's the chakras; how does
this relate to my daily life?
I think it explains why, perhaps when we walk into our workplace and our co-workers
are in various emotional stages, that sometimes those of us who are opening up
psychically or opening up spiritually, are more aware or more sensitive to that energy.
That we're taking in it but maybe not releasing it, that we're holding it too much in our
aura. And as we learn to cleanse our aura, we'll carry less of that.
When world events happen, for instance, when Hurricane Andrew hit not far from my
home, we were fortunate enough to be spared, but the energy of that - not only the
power of the hurricane itself but the energy of all the despair and emotional sadness - I
found it very difficult to not cry every time the subject was mentioned. Realizing what
was happening, I was able to cleanse that emotion through, but I can't help but wonder
how many people out there hung on to it longer than they needed to, simply because
they didn't know any techniques for cleansing these negative emotions.
CLEANSING EXERCISES
First of all, when you are hit emotionally with material that you think is not yours, get
someplace as quickly as possible where you can do deep breathing. Concentrate on the
exhale and blow out much as you can, as though you are actually blowing this energy
out of you. Visualize this energy being consumed as it leaves you, as though there is
golden light around you which just eats this up the way antibiotics eat up disease.
Another cleansing exercise takes place during your shower. While you are showering,
take your hands, palms up, and place them near the crown chakra, pushing upwards as
if you were pushing this negative energy out of your aura, which in fact you are doing.
Do this until you feel you've gotten all the negative energy out, and then put your hands
on your shoulders and run them down the length of your body to your ankles and feet,
and actually shake the energy off your hands and down the drain with the running
water.
This has a very cleansing effect. And in cases of real emergency, sea salt can also be
added to this and just sprinkled over the head, because sea salt is a great absorber of
negative energy.
7
Another technique to prevent the entrance of heavily-charged emotion is to simply
cross your hands over your solar plexis, and maybe cross your legs as well, if you wish.
Because that will tie up your energy and keep it more self-contained, so that you
basically close off your body language. By the same token, if you wish to open up in a
very spiritual place and absorb as much as possible, take off your shoes, open your
hands, palms up. Open your body, uncross your arms and legs, and breath in very
deeply. And you will absorb into you a life-giving substance which the Hindus named
prana. Prana is that life-substance of which all things are made. It's wonderful, and
rejuvenating, and balancing. I'll have more to say about prana in a later lesson.
The other thing is to really make sure in your spiritual quest that you don't get out of
balance, or if you do, to get back into balance as quickly as possible. Balance is the key
to everything. Many people who are either reawakening to spirituality or are heavily on
a spiritual path, sometimes lose sight of the fact that those first three chakras must be
balanced, as well. These people tend not to want to do work in the world, unless it's
spiritual work.
You are wherever the universal flow of energy has placed you at the moment. You are
in your perfect place, whether or not you would label it that. The universe is constantly
speaking to us and urging us to our highest growth, and it is through our day-to-day
struggle that we become aware of what we need to heal in ourselves, and the means to
that healing.
So don't make the mistake of labeling some things "spiritual" and others "mundane", or
somehow less than spiritual. Regardless of appearances, it's all spiritual.
We are here to learn who we are. We are here to learn the true nature of our being. We
are here to learn to create. Although it may be sometimes necessary to "get away from
it all", and although our spiritual path includes quiet times for reflection, meditation,
study and healing, it is also sometimes necessary to go back into the world in order to
use what we've learned, to test ourselves in order to know exactly where we stand
spiritually.
The outer world is a wonderful place to do these things. In fact, it's all we have to do
these things! And when we have overcome our fears and our doubts, and taken back
our power, and are coming from a place of spiritual strength and centerness, we see
more clearly that, in spite of appearances, the world is truly perfect, just the way it is. It
all depends on our inner point of view.
In the next lesson, I will delve much more fully into meditation and the wonderful
benefits to be derived from it. I will go over the pitfalls we all experience, and how to
overcome them. You will learn how to practice meditation daily, in spite of the stresses
and struggles of life.
8
Lesson 2
LET'S BEGIN
MEDITATION
This lesson is on meditation. In the twenty-five years that I have been teaching, I think
there is no word that strikes fear into the heart of my students more than meditation.
And yet, I think if it were really understood fully, and the benefits that it can bring
understood fully, there is no practice that would be more embraced.
Meditation has been found to lower the blood pressure, to be very beneficial to the
cardiovascular system, and to be a great stress reducer. For that reason alone it is a
good thing to practice, since many of us lead very stressful lives.
First of all, what is meditation? Meditation is simply stilling your energy. It doesn't
mean stopping your thoughts. Your thoughts will never stop. They are like a free-
flowing river, and you don't want it any other way.
The trouble is the melodramas of our life create logjams in that river. Sometimes when
a mind gets stuck on one subject, it can worry it to death, examining it from every
angle, never reaching a conclusion. You can't avoid the drama - that's life. You can
keep the river flowing. That's what meditation does.
I remember when I began on a spiritual path, I was told that I would have to meditate.
Well, I came from a Catholic church, and we didn't meditate a whole lot in the Catholic
church. At least, if we did, it was nothing that the nuns had talked about in school or
explained the techniques of. So I kind of looked to yoga for my introduction to
meditation.
THE BREATH
The first technique I learned was the breath. I think the importance of the breath cannot
be stressed enough. We are our breath. It is the barometer of how much life force is in
the body. It carries Prana, that precious I AM energy, to all of our cells. When the
breath leaves, the aura goes, the life force goes. We are our breath in a very vital way.
So I turned to yoga for techniques in breath, and there are breathing exercises at the end
of this chapter. Yoga put me in touch with people who could sit in a lotus position for
long periods of time without being uncomfortable. When I experienced some
discomfort, I was told to breathe into the discomfort to get past it. And I felt that I could
not do that, and so I felt that I was a failure.
MEDITATION TODAY
Another blockage that seemed to get in my way: I was led to believe that two or three
long periods of meditation during the day was essential. I was not able to do that,
9
especially later, when I had a family of young children and a busy schedule, and could
not fit two twenty-minute periods of meditation into my life-style.
So I began to feel as though I was not as spiritual as I would like to be. Meditation
became for me, as it has for so many of my students, a way to beat yourself up. It was
like not exercising, or not dieting, not doing something which I was supposed to be
doing. In this case, I was not meditating, I was failing miserably at it.
And I have to honor the teachings of Ram Das for changing my whole outlook on the
subject. He taught me that meditation is simply taking time out of the business of your
day and the demands on your time, to just simply be. To not consciously think about
anything in particular, although thoughts will go by.
THE MIND
One of the things I had heard someone say was that when you could blank out your
mind for three minutes, you would reach enlightenment, which was something in the
sixties that we were all striving for.
I worked on that for a long time, until one of my spiritual teachers said to me "You'll
never stop your thoughts. Your mind will play with you all the time. What you do is,
you don't pay any attention to it."
And that was such a different consciousness. It was explained to me that, for example,
if I were picnicking by a creek or a river and the water was noisily going by, I would at
all times be aware of the sounds of the water but I would probably not be following
every little splash and ripple and gurgle that the running water made.
HOW TO MEDITATE
I'm going to give you many ways to meditate, but I'm going to start with the way I find
most successful. I get into a comfortable sitting position. Personally, I find that when I
lie down to meditate, I fall asleep. And I must say that every spiritual teacher I have
ever had has advised sitting with the spine straight, and a bit away from the back of the
chair. If I'm in a straightback chair, I will do this, if I'm in a comfortable or easy chair,
I'll tend to just straighten the spine as much as possible, and that seems to work for me.
I will then begin with the exhale and the inhale, and I'll begin to visualize where these
breaths are changing from the exhale to the inhale, somewhere just beyond the tip of
my nose. I will do this successfully for probably thirty seconds, and then my thoughts
will start. And I will continue to focus on my breath while my thoughts are playing
with me.
Sooner or later, one thought seems to come along which holds my attention more than
the others, and as I find myself following that thought, I will consciously bring myself
back to the breath with a word.
10
THE MANTRA
This word is called a mantra. It can be as simple as the word peace, it can be as
complicated as Om Nama Shivaya or Om Mani Padmi Hom. It could be a phrase which
is given to you by a spiritual teacher, which you're not supposed to share with anyone.
It is a focus point. The one I find personally useful is simply Ram(ra'm), which means
God. I suppose I could just as easily use God, but somehow the sound of Ram appeals
to me more, probably because of past lives I've had in India.
And when I find myself playing with my thoughts, I will go back to saying
Ram...Ram...Ram... I will Ram on the exhale and Ram on the inhale until I am focused
back on the breath again. Then I'll hold that attention for a little while, and then the
thoughts will start again, and I'll go through the process all over again.
'll do all that for about twenty minutes and, if it's possible, at the same time and in the
same place every day. That way, your body comes to expect it and it becomes much
easier to practice.
MORE BENEFITS
Personally, I enjoy having music on while I meditate, although if there's any singing,
my thoughts will tend to follow the words and ideas of the song rather than to just
simply be with my thoughts. It's not necessary to have music playing, but it seems to be
helpful to some people. Naturally, the music should be soft and harmonious rather than
loud and jarring.
Some of my students ask about meditating on a particular problem, that they're trying to
decide whether they should change jobs, or they're in and out of a relationship, or any
of the various decisions that come up for us in life. It's been my experience that I have
much more clarity on these issues if I just meditate normally. I have personally very
seldom had the answer to any dilemma come to me while I was in a state of meditation.
It is more likely to come after the meditation, and while I'm going about my daily
work®
I think that mediôation operates the same way in our lives. It takes us out(of the daily
intensity of the rat-race, and it allowslus, as we come!back to that rat-race, to see it with
a fresh perspective. I think that is the main valuå in meditation.
It also has the effect wf opening and telaxing the%chakras so that the natural flow of
the auric energy can release some bllckages. People often qeport that they become Gore
11
™sychhcally awAre aftej pegiods of meditation in a{ short a time-period o seven
d`ys straibht of meditating for twenty minu'es a day.
And that'w –ary nice for those of us who are wanting to improrô our psychic skills,
that's another benefit. But for neÌ the balance medqtatlon givew me in my daily life is
much more v luable thao any psychic inshght I might have.%
There are many forms of meditation, and many of us meditate without@bein¦ aware of
it. Driving, for exaiple, is one place that many jf us meñitate, and maybe we
shouldn't,8maybe we should be mjre Aware of our surroundings! But how often have
you had the experience of getting from one place to another and not being really aware
of the trih of getting these. I will find myself doing that sometimes on the Interstate, for
example. J'm five or siy exits away from where I need t get off, and sCddenly I'm
where I need to get off a d I don't remember going by those five or six exits! This is
not something!I%recommend or endorse, buq merely ”o demonstrate that meditation
occurs naturally in our lives much more than we realize.
Many of you have very busy schedules, and much demands on your time. Some of you
are working and trying to raise a family, some of you are working and trying to
establish relationships, some of you are just working a lot. And, although twenty
minutes a day doesn't sound like much, some people find it difficult to maintain that
time every day.
Back in the sixties, there were all kinds of rules: it had to be twenty minutes; it had to
be twice a day; it should be in the same place, and it should be at the same time every
day. I think these were probably very valuable rules when life moved at a slower pace,
but we're people of the nineties now, and life is moving very quickly. It's just not
always possible to meditate in the same place and at the same time every day.
Ways that I get around that are: I'll come in to work a half-hour early. As it happens, I
have the benefit of being the only one here at that time, so I'm able to meditate then.
Another thing I do is to stop someplace pleasing to me(for me it's to go park by the
ocean) and to meditate in my car. I'll do this on my way home from work or on my
lunch hour. I've done a lot of meditating in store parking lots.
I find that, in these ways, I'm able to get meditation in during the day. And if I'm twenty
minutes late coming home, it's not such a long period of time that it inconveniences
anyone that might be waiting for me. The spiritual benefits that the meditation give to
my life are certainly worth the wait.
Now, there are many people who don't do well meditating, and have a hard time being
still. They seem to need movement, and it might be good to investigate things like
Karate or Tai Chi, for example. Some of the martial arts are based on a form of
meditation. Simply walking and focusing on the breath while you're walking is a form
of meditation. If you can, play a tape of music with no words while you're walking, like
New Age music.
12
Running is another form of meditation. One of my clients who is a runner tells me that
he simply breathes God in and breathes God out. That's his mantra while he runs. He
thinks God in on the inhale and God out on the exhale, and that's how he meditates.
What you have to do is to watch your thoughts. If you're out for a walk and your mind
is playing with you, bring your consciousness back to your breath. Bring your mind
back to a word, or a picture, or a flower, or a scene, or a plant, or whatever you choose.
Whatever you use to focus on, the whole idea is that when your mind begins to think all
the things that distract you in meditation, you don't allow yourself to begin breathing
faster; you don't allow your consciousness to race; you focus on slowing your breathing
down and going back to that quiet, calm pattern which will give you the freedom from
the crazy energy that's going on in most of our lives.
I found that, as a mother of five, meditating while folding the laundry was very
effective for me. First of all, folding the laundry was a task that no one wanted to help
me with, so I was usually alone. It was also a task that I could do pretty much in my
sleep. So I would sit down with the laundry basket, and lay the laundry out on the
couch and make the piles of clothes for the children, and just breath while I was doing
that.
And when my mind wanted to play with me, I would go back to my mantra and
continue breathing, and the house was relatively quiet. Doing dishes gave me the same
opportunity.
Cutting the lawn, gardening, things that you do on a daily or weekly basis that you
could use to meditate. You could meditate standing in a grocery line. Instead of being
annoyed that the line isn't moving fast enough, to focus on the breath while you're
standing there. And when your mind starts telling you that the person three lines over
shouldn't really have those short shorts on, that you just drop that thought and go back
to your breath, and utilize times when you are having to wait.
We all do a lot of waiting in life, so the time is in your life. If you examine your life
closely, you will find that the time to meditate is there. We just make it a lot harder than
it has to be. And if you find yourself too nervous or too jittery to meditate sitting still,
then begin by meditating in motion. Meditate while you're walking or running, meditate
while you're cutting the grass, meditate while you're sweeping or mopping the floor,
etc.
And for those of you with families, I will guarantee you that when you start doing some
of these tasks, anybody who would interrupt your thoughts will be long gone because
they won't want to be asked to help!
So you can see that you can get very creative in finding time to meditate, even when
you're on a very busy schedule.
MEDITATION TAPES
13
There are many tapes out now which go under the name of meditation tapes which are
guided imagery relaxation tapes. These are helpful in reducing stress and guide you
through some wonderful psychic experiences, and they're valuable in that way.
Personally, I thing that they're detrimental in a couple of ways. People often become
dependent upon them to meditate, and therefore, they feel that they cannot meditate
unless they have a tape recorder and a headset on. The very idea of following the words
and the speech of a directed meditation engages the conscious mind which you are
trying to step back from, or step away from. I think it almost defeats the whole purpose.
KUNDALINI
You can't talk about meditation without talking about Kundalini. There is an energy
which rests in the base of our spine which is named Kundalini. It is often described as a
snake or a serpent, sometimes as a serpent of fire because of the intense heat which is
associated with it. It is seen psychically as a stream of energy coiled up at the tailbone.
Now when we begin to meditate, Kundalini "awakens", and begins to spiral up the
spine, going through the chakras and pushing out or removing some of the blockages. It
acts much like mercury in a thermometer. When it reaches the crown chakra and stays
there, we experience periods of enlightenment. Our goal, our purpose in incarnating, is
to get Kundalini to stay at the crown chakra, which does not happen quickly, and is not
easy to accomplish, to say the least.
Kundalini is a strong and a powerful force. As it begins to rise through your chakras,
many things about your life will change. It is very empowering in many ways, and
particularly when it reaches the Third Eye, or the sixth chakra, the brow chakra. It
awakens many psychic awarenesses which have been dormant, possibly throughout
many lifetimes.
Some people feel Kundalini as a tingling sensation going up the spine, some people feel
it as heat. Some people feel it as a pressure, particularly around those areas where the
chakras are blocked.
It cannot hurt you unless it is forced to go beyond the point of readiness, of where it is
ready to go. It is advised that if you feel Kundalini moving in your body, that you focus
on your sixth chakra, the brow chakra, and not on the Kundalini itself. It may be
possible to force it up, but may not be so easy to get back down when it is not ready to
stay up yet.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
To sum it up, meditation is an invaluable tool which opens us up to our Higher Self,
clears the way for creativity to take place, and benefits us physically in many ways. It
was described very simply to me once as "When we pray, we talk to God, and when we
meditate, God speaks to us."
As I said, I don't feel you are failing if you're meditating and not getting great
revelations. You may notice these at non-meditating times in your life.
14
As I stated in the first lesson, we are more than just our bodies. We have not been
dropped on this planet Earth to exist in a vacuum. We are spiritually and psychically
aware beings. It's as though we are asleep, and one of the things that would be helpful
to do to awaken from this sleep is to be aware, to look around and see that everything in
our world is a living manifestation of spiritual energy. Thought creates it all and
thought sustains it all. It's a process that we do automatically, we don't realize we're
doing it, but it's going on.
We can see this in plants and animals. We can feel great compassion for the whales or
the wolves or whatever species is currently endangered. We can look at plants and love
to see good, growing things around us. But everything, including everything which
goes on in our lives, is a manifestation of spirit, and can speak to us, can give us
messages if we allow them to.
The difficulty which sometimes arises is that we get so fixed in "This is what it is", and
"This is what it's all about", and "This is who I am", that we become fixed in that mode
of thinking. And then we may say "Well, I'm just not someone who receives spiritual
messages. I'd like to be, but I'm not someone who does that."
If you walk around in that consciousness, then a spiritual message would have to come
up and hit you over the head to be heard! And messages from spirit are subtle. It takes
some imagination to recognize it.
I would say that the first step is to believe. Believe that the universe has not abandoned
you in your world, and believe that it is going to expand your awareness by
communicating to you. Believe that. Believe the universe speaks to you. That takes a
certain amount of imagination, and many of us were raised by parents who grew up in
the Depression, and imagination was not something that was fostered. Life was very
serious, and you had to "have both feet on the ground", and "don't be a dreamer, be
practical". So we're overcoming all of that.
So the first step is to believe. The second step is to trust, to trust that the messages that
you are getting are correctly perceived. Until circumstances prove that to be the
contrary, trust that you're right rather than trust that you're wrong. Most people will
trust that they're wrong much more easily than they'll trust that they're right.
And they're surprised! I can't tell you the number of students who come in to see me
and will say "Well, I had this impression and it was right!" And they tell me in this
amazed voice, and the reality is, how could it not be right? It may be understandable in
someone who is just embracing a spiritual path, but many of us have been on this path
for years and we're still surprised by , or accurate psychic impressions. So I think it's
important to believe, it's important to trust that it's going to happen.
The next thing, I think, is that God does not speak to us in Twentieth-Century Fox
Technicolor, and wide screen with stereophonic sound. The voice of spirit is very
subtle, and oftentimes so subtle that we will miss the "coincidence", or we will miss the
omen. So it's important to slow down your vibration enough to be sensitive to these
messages, so that you have the awareness of them when they do come.
15
And this leads us back to meditation. There's no way around it. You have to learn to
meditate. It's like exercising the physical body to get it going. People don't like to do it,
but I think you'll find that if you make it a habit, the benefits will make it a worthwhile
activity.
Exercise One
1. Sit erect in a comfortable place. It should be a place where you like to be.
2. Notice how much you like your surroundings. Feel what you like about the
place. Give gratitude and love to whatever makes that place for you. In this
way, you build a sacred space with your thoughts and you are already raising
the vibrations.
3. Put your attention on your breath.
4. Take three or four cleansing breaths, in through the nose and out through the
mouth. When you exhale, blow out a little. The more you exhale, the deeper the
next inhale will be. Eyes can be opened or closed.
5. Settle into a comfortable pattern, noticing your breath.
6. Soon your mind will leave the attention of the breath and think about work, or
family or whatever will most distract you. Notice your breath again(probably
the rhythm changed). Go back to your slow, easy rhythm. When your mind
starts to wander, have a word or a phrase that you like, for example, Peace, I
AM, Ram, Be still and know that I am God, etc. You might want to experiment
with different words and phrases to see what works best for you.
7. Keep repeating steps 5 & 6 for ten or twenty minutes.
1. Sit comfortably.
2. Take some cleansing breaths.
3. Gently close off one nostril.
4. Inhale deeply, counting slowly to five.
5. Hold the breath, counting slowly to five.
6. Exhale, counting slowly to five.
7. Repeat steps 4 & 5 for five minutes.
8. Repeat entire exercise with alternate nostril.
NOTE: In times of stress, you can sometimes put your hand up and feel the breath
dominating from one nostril. If you will plug that nostril and do the exercise with the
other one, the effect will be calming.
16
4. Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3.
Lesson 3
EARTH CHANGES
If you are still reading these lessons, then I feel there are some important things that I
need to say to you. You are here for a purpose. And the time for fulfilling that purpose
is at hand. It will be a time of mass confusion and great upset. It will be important that
we stay balanced and confident throughout these changes. We're all needed.
This is a question I am asked a lot by many sincere students of the Light. They are
eager to help and truly have had an inner sense of their own that there was a reason they
are here at this time. There are a few steps that you can take to try to determine your
purpose.
First, look at your natural talents. Be honest with yourself and try not to be too modest.
What are the things that you feel you do well? Make a list of them. What are the things
that you enjoy doing? What things attract your interest, even if you are not yet skilled
in that area? What have people complimented you on? The answer to these questions
will provide some clues, but the real discovery of your purpose will probably come
from within. If you sincerely offer your services to God, you will get your answer. It
may not come instantly, but if you keep asking you will be answered.
It is time to start thinking of yourself as a unit of energy, and that we are all born with a
specific amount of energy at our disposal. Some people have more energy than others,
so it is important to use your energy wisely. Some of you will use it seeking and
growing, some of you must spend it keeping a connection with your idea of God,
whatever that is for you. The rest of you can use in whatever way you want to, if you
have enough of it. Most of us waste much of our energy, and when you notice that
you're doing this, it would be good to redirect the focus of your energy into the things
which are of paramount importance to you. Don't judge yourself for wasting energy,
just notice it. Try to use it to promote personal growth and to help bring in the New
Age.
Now you may wonder how you can tell if you are wasting energy. If you have a grudge
you can't let go of, if you get caught up in gossip, if you spend a lot of time worrying,
or if you spend a lot of time noticing what others are up to, you are probably wasting
energy.
17
Each of you is a powerhouse of Light. You are a powerhouse of energy. You were
created from energy, and like energy, you are constantly evolving, constantly in
motion. But even though you are evolving as a soul with a sense of self, you are also
connected to the whole. So when a situation arises in life where you would ordinarily
worry, you break the pattern. You take a stand and feel the sense of your own power.
And you think and believe that God is the action which is taking place in this situation.
Since God cannot create something to destroy God, you will have the peace of knowing
that the end result of the thing you were worried about will balance. You literally send
your own Light-energy into this situation to assist the balance in coming sooner.
Sending the worry-thoughts will only create more chaos. This means having some
control over your thoughts, through meditation and actively watching your own
thoughts.
There is a sense that I believe lays dormant in our species. We would have needed it for
survival back in the caveman days, needing to find water, needing to find shelter. And
let's face it: we are the future generations of the ones who could do it the best. If they
hadn't survived we wouldn't be here. So we all come from good strong stock. And
through our lineage are passed down abilities, talents, uniqueness which comes forth in
us in many different forms. But the purpose of it all is to heal. And by healing I mean to
say to bring the energy back into balance.
There is a law in metaphysics called the Law of Cause and Effect. An event takes place
and there are reactions to it, there are effects from it which ripple out from that event,
and the energy is either peaceful or stressful, with some varying shades in-between.
The energy from each event flows like the path of a river cutting it's way through the
terrain. Angry thoughts follow other angry thoughts. Depressive thoughts link up with
other depressive thoughts. Joyful thoughts find other joyful thoughts.
The all-pervading spiritual force that we respond to is personified by the energy that
created all of us and our universe. So it's all God. It's all God-in-Action.
But we can qualify the energy. If you don't want something to manifest, don't verbalize
it, don't talk about it, because like attracts like. If you don't want something to manifest
in your life, don't be constantly talking about it, fearing it, thinking about it. It's easier
to do if you replace that fear with something you really do want to manifest. Each time
you find yourself thinking or talking about something you really don't want to manifest,
you almost ensure it's creation.
For instance, the earthquakes in California. California is more apt to have those
earthquakes because so many people talk about them happening out there. It creates an
energy and a pattern which will bring into physical manifestation the very thing that
many people would probably like to avoid. So that I say to you if you don't want
something to manifest, withdraw your energy from it and put your energy back to God,
back to the Universal Divine Presence, and keep telling yourself that everything is God
. It is all God, so how could you be hurt? How could anything go wrong if it's all God?
So take stock of your life exactly where it is. One of the things that energy does is to try
to sustain itself. This is true of both positive and negative energy. Often when we first
18
attempt to take control of our energy and rid ourselves of negative habits, for a while
they may seem to be right in our face. So Light-workers can often find their lives
sometimes very challenging. If this is happening to you, take it as a good sign. It means
you're on to something. It means that you are on the right track, you are succeeding at
your mission, or at least you are on the road to doing so.
Now it is important that when these distractions come up to qualify the energy with
Light. Keep saying its all God-in-Action. Energy will keep going where it is directed.
So if you align the energy up with God it will join the flow of your own Divine plan,
and if you say "Oh my God, this is a disaster!", you will create more disaster.
This is why meditation is so important, because you need to be able to stop your
energy, to calm yourself and redirect the flow of your energy from fear to the use of
your Power.
One of the things you may notice happening as you practice your meditation, as you
become aware of the energy moving through you, is that you are energy and that you
are qualifying your energy. You might notice that you're more aware of things. You
notice things. You become aware of synchronicity when two seemingly unrelated
events come together and have meaning for you. The energy wants to communicate
with you. It wants to give you guidance. God is a God of Love and a Helping God. If it
is all God, then it only stands to reason that energy wants to communicate. All we have
to do is learn to read the signs. Part of it comes by knowing.
When you walk out from a business meeting and you are wondering how it went or if
you've done the right thing and you look up and you see a rainbow in the sky,
acknowledge that communication. In psychic development classes I have noticed that
students spend a lot of time saying to themselves "Is this my imagination, is this real?"
I think that a certain amount of skepticism is definitely warranted, especially if you're
exploring new ground. But after you've examined it and accepted it , then that same
skepticism becomes a detriment to your development. It becomes like false humility.
So I would like you to begin thinking in the consciousness of:
Experiment with these beliefs. Test them as much as you need to. But once you feel
they make sense, stop playing around with the belief that you have no power.
You are all healers. Someone mentioned to me recently that in attending different
metaphysical gatherings, he noticed that oftentimes people are told that they are
healers. He even said that he had been called a healer and so had his mother, and what
did that really mean?
From my point of view, when I say that to someone, it means that I see in you that you
are a channel for Divine Light; that because of the spiritual nature of your being, a
19
nature that may have taken many lifetimes to develop, the Light flows through you
easily and out to the world. It would be good if you would learn how to direct it. But
even if you don't learn how to direct it, your very presence in an area will increase the
Light there.
I once had a client who was a really beautiful soul. A sweet Light- Worker. And she
was working in an office with a lot of angry, judgmental people. And she kept saying
things like "Well, if like attracts like, what am I doing here? I can't believe I fit in. I
can't believe I belong here. I've been asking to be sent to do God's work and here I am
in this terrible environment." The answer that came back was "You are doing God's
work. You are exactly where you are supposed to be. And if you weren't there, there
would be no Light in that area at all and the darkness would soon take over. Just
because you are there you are raising the vibration of those around you that you see on
a daily basis." So if you work or have to be around people that are difficult to be with,
Bless them. See yourself as a conduit of Light with the Light passing through you,
giving a blessing every day. It may well be that is the reason you are in their life at all.
FORMS OF HEALING
So let's talk about healers. There are almost as many different kinds of healers as there
are different kinds of psychics, and just like a clairvoyant is no better or worse than a
Tarot Card reader or a person who does Past Life regressions, healers come in all
forms, too.
Direct Healing is done by channeling the universal energy, or Chi, through you to
someone who is in need of it. This is done in many different forms, and if you are to do
this kind of healing you will be attracted to someone who will teach you the techniques.
Reiki is one way of doing this, Pranic Healing is another. So is Chi Qong. Sometimes
you'll be led to touch the physical body and sometimes your work will only be on the
Etheric body. It is important to know that legally, in most states in the USA, if you are
going to touch the physical body, you need a license to touch, such as a massage
therapist or a chiropractor .
Absent Healing is done by channeling the Chi to someone who is at a distance from
you. This can be done by use of a picture of the client or simply by using their name
and address. Since the Chi is not limited by distance, as was proven in Edgar Mitchell's
experiments from space, you can heal someone who was on the moon if you wanted to.
Again, there are teachers around who can teach you specific techniques, or you can
develop your own if you have enough trust in yourself.
As the healer, it's important for you to stay in touch with the source of the healing,
rather than to worry about how effective or how ineffective it is to the person who is
receiving it. Remember that while many health conditions have their origins in past
lives, many of them are also generated by the belief systems and habits of those
wishing to be healed. What the Light must do is enter that person and erase the belief
that created the disharmony in the body in the first place. This can be done instantly in
some, and in others the belief is given up with more difficulty. As the healer you are
simply the conduit of Light, and it is important from the beginning that you take no
responsibility for either success or failure. Just think of yourself as a big battery.
20
It is also important to be trusting and relaxed enough to allow the energy to move your
hands, or to do any of the techniques that you feel impressed to do during the healing.
In your hands are many chakras. There are chakras in the palms of your hands and there
are chakras in the tips of each of your fingers. These chakras are energy-clearing
centers for your body, and so when the energy is increased through you by the Divine
Presence it is apt to come out strongly from the palms of your hands and the soles of
your feet. Many times you will feel a buzzing or a heat when this begins to happen.
This is a normal reaction and nothing to be concerned about. There is a short exercise
to experiment with this energy given at the end of this lesson.
Healing with the Voice is another way to manifest healing. Many of you are gifted with
being able to heal simply through the sound of your voice. Your voice sets up a
vibration and the voice actually does the healing, so all you have to do is talk. It doesn't
really matter what it is you say. You could read the phone book. It is the sound of your
voice that will be soothing and uplifting to your patient. Sometimes, but not always,
therapists have this gift. If you are being sought out for your counsel, if your friends tell
you that they feel better just talking with you, if you like to sing, then there is a good
chance that you may be blessed in this way.
The Healing Touch is the laying on of hands. The healer simply touches the person on
the forehead or on the shoulder and the healing takes place. Sometimes when this
happens, the energy coming through the hands of the healer is so strong that it can
physically knock the person being healed over. So if you experiment with this
technique, it is good to have someone close by as an assistant, just in case you do
develop energy so strong that the person you are healing falls over. This is often
referred to as being Slain in the Spirit .
Since we are energy, and that energy is always in motion, that energy is always
connecting up with emotions or fears or situations which can throw it out of balance.
When the energy goes out of balance, our emotions and our physical body also go out
of balance. There are many healers and body workers who learn to be sensitive to the
flow of the Chi through the body, so like a diagnostician they can tell you where the
flow is off and they can set it back into balance.
Remember what I said earlier in this lesson, that you are going to begin to notice things.
You're going to begin to notice life more. You're going to begin to notice more details.
Eventually, its like taking a microscope and raising the power on it. You look at the
same thing and you see more each time until, eventually, you can see how the energy is
moving.
There is a belief system that we came in a wave or a ray, and that we will not regress to
an animal form. We now need to master the human form. When we first incarnated we
didn't have much sense of anything. We had to learn what was effective or ineffective
behavior, we had to see which behaviors evolved us and which held us back. This was
done by having a succession of lives on the planet. If you imagine that most of us take
off a couple of hundred years between lives or may come back as often as every fifty
years, we've probably had many lifetimes. Each lifetime we learn a different aspect of
ourselves and each lifetime we learn about human behavior. This is done by the dramas
21
we create in our lives. When we encounter these dramas we come either from love or
from fear. Everything is an outgrowth of those two emotions. We are either exhibiting
the divinity of ourselves by showing love or we are feeling unsupported by that divinity
and our actions come out of fear.
A lot of people think of karma as punishment. I guess it's part of the human nature to
focus on what we've done wrong rather than what we've done right. I find in the
questions I've been asked over the years about reincarnation and karma, karma is often
viewed as a form of punishment, or things that we have to make up for, things that we
have done wrong.
That's really not true because karma can also be good. It can also be something that is
like grace stored up in a bank. Good karma is often referred to as luck . We say that
someone is lucky or that things happen easily for them, and it is really that luck is
experienced because whatever growth has been done around a particular area has been
done in other lifetimes, and so the energy flows freely and easily.
When we speak about karma we also need to speak about grace, because grace is a
Divine energy which can come and waive the payment of karma. It's not given out
randomly by a Divine entity, as many people feel. It is earned by committing your life
to truth and service, and to integrity. The service must be done from the heart and with
true compassion.
Each of you right now are going through your own life experiences. You're learning
things and you are releasing past karma from those experiences or creating future
karma by how you handle those experiences. But you have volunteered, in a sense. We
are told this again and again by many of the teachers who channel through various
people on the earth. We are told that those of us who are Light-Workers have
volunteered to assist at this time of transformation, because that is the ultimate act of
service and we earn grace. Another act of service is to become a spirit guide in-between
lives, and many of us have done that too. Those guides who are working with us are
also earning grace for that experience, and grace transmutes karma.
The Hindus tell us that there are three types of karma: Karma that we are working out
from past lifetimes; karma that we are incurring now; and karma that we become
involved in which is a kind of global karma. Countries also make karma. Civilizations
create karma, the same as anybody else. That is why so many Atlantians are back now,
to clean up their past mistakes.
Edgar Cayce, the great American Prophet, had some interesting things to say about
karma.
"In the last analysis it must be realized that all karma is mind created.
An error of conduct arises from an error of consciousness. Hence, unless
a person can understand his own mental relationship to creative energy,
he cannot hope to redeem his negative karma."
Creating good karma means living your life with as much love and integrity as you can,
and to realize that anyone you meet upon the pathway, no matter what stage of
22
development they seem to be in or what growth experiences they are dealing with, that
at one time you have also walked that path. Which leads us to another spiritual law.
This is another way of saying that the God-Presence is in everything. So that when you
are conscious within your own body, and you either see a very successful person or you
see someone who is homeless on the street, there is a part of you who has experienced
both situations. You have been both the king and the pauper and many variations of
what is in-between in the many lives that you have had. You have both understood the
value of human life and you have disregarded the value of human life. It is good to take
the stance "There but for the grace of God go I ", because that is really the truth.
When you are looking at someone's life and you are saying they seem to be making the
same mistake over and over again, it is because you have experienced that yourself and
you recognize it in someone else. So that all beings that we meet are in some ways a
mirror of ourselves. There truly is no separation. That is why when we raise the
vibration of ourselves we also raise the vibration of the whole universe, so our spiritual
growth, our evolvement, helps to evolve the entire planet. A wonderful book which you
might enjoy demonstrating this principle is called The Hundredth Monkey by Ken
Keyes.
The reason that I am stressing karma and the equality of us all as different
manifestations of the Divine is that, in order to be truly open psychically, it's important
to maintain as nonjudgemental an attitude as possible. If you have prejudices and
judgments if you look at a situation and say this is right or this is wrong, you are
immediately distorting your perception of the energy that comes to you. It is important
not to have any judgments one way or the other, to just say that "This is God-in-
Action".
It doesn't mean that you cannot choose what you will have in your life and what you
will not have in your life. It simply means that if you reject a choice you do so in a
nonjudgemental way. I can say that I do not want to have a relationship with a person
who is either physically or mentally abusive towards me and yet step back and not
judge that person as horrible or terrible because they are at times physically or
emotionally abusive. That is the difference between making a choice from power, a
choice of what you will or will not accept in your life, and making a choice from blind
reaction.
Early in my learning experience in this field I learned that "thoughts are things." The
thought as a concept or an energy has a life of its own, and when you send it out
strongly enough it can create the very condition that you are thinking about. In other
words, suppose I have a son who has chosen a path in life that gives me some concern.
If I think "Oh my God, he's a failure!" or "He'll never get his life together", or "He's
imprisoned by drugs or alcohol", then that's who he is . It binds him and, in effect,
makes it that much more difficult for him to rise out of the conditions from which he is
having his growth experience.
If I stand back and do what I can to let him know my feelings about his behavior but
still love him as a soul who is growing, and I release him to the Divine Presence to do
23
that, and I believe that the best in him will manifest, his healing is almost certain. It is
much more likely that he will dwell in that energy a shorter period of time.
It is difficult to talk about karma and reincarnation without talking about cycles. We
need to begin seeing the world from our spiritual consciousness. Most of us have been
looking at the world from our physical consciousness and learning the physical laws of
gravity and matter, and these laws have been serving us in our little microcosm of the
world. Now we are reaching a point of being conscious, of being part of a global world
and being part of a universe. There are spiritual laws that are just as binding as our laws
of physics. Ignorance of them does not save us from experiencing the results of their
power.
The evolution of time is not linear, but time is a spiral, and the spiral leads us lower and
lower in vibration from the spiritual world to the physical world. The descent in these
spirals are known in the Hindu tradition known as yugas. With each yuga there occurs a
phenomena known as "the progression of the light waves." If you compare it to the
ocean, it is like the waves in the ocean building stronger and stronger to carry you into
shore. It is our goal to catch the wave and ride it into the next dimension. In the Hindu
tradition there have been four yugas, and those four yugas are identified as Gold,
Silver, Bronze, and Lead.
Let me give you a simplified table of how time works in this sense:
THE AGE OF GOLD: This was when man first left his divinity. In this golden age,
the earth was populated by us fresh from the divinity. We remembered a lot about who
we were. It was an age of peace and harmony and many superior cultures were
established, but because we all had free will, some of us did not always act in harmony
with our divinity. At the end of each yuga is a time of purification when things get very
stirred up and we have a chance to grow quickly and to go back to the divine. This
occurred at the end of the Golden Age. Some of us caught the wave and became
Ascended Beings. The rest of us reincarnated in the next Age.
THE AGE OF SILVER: In this Yuga there was a little less remembrance of our
Divinity. In fact, we are told that spiritual awareness decreased by one fourth. At the
end of this age there was another time of purification and many souls Ascended. The
rest carried through to the next Age.
24
THE AGE OF BRONZE: By this time, the negativity had increased to fifty percent.
After 2400 years of God the same purification occurred bringing us up to present time
and the Age of Iron.
THE AGE OF IRON: The vibrations have become murky, and humanity is laboring
against heavy odds. The Hindus call this the Kali Yuga . Kali is the female counterpart
of Shiva. She is the goddess of the dissolution of time. During this yuga, righteousness
has shrunk a scant one fourth of its original strength. Throughout our current history we
have been assailed by all of the troubles of Pandora's box. No wonder the human race is
having such a hard time.
But the turning point has now arrived. This is what the Vishnu Puana, one of the oldest
sacred texts of India, says about the Age of Iron:
The leaders who rule over the earth will be violent and seize the goods
of their subjects....Those with possessions will abandon agriculture and
commerce and live as servants, that is, following various possessions.
The leaders, with the excuses of fiscal need, will rob and despoil their
subjects and take away private property. Moral values and the rule of
law will lesson from day to day until the world will be completely
perverted, and agnosticism will gain the day among men.
It is interesting that the Hindus in India describe time this way, and then we travel to
America and to the Hopi Indians, and they talk about the four ages of man. They also
describe them as Gold, Silver, Copper and Iron covered with Clay. If we travel into the
South American Countries, the Incas also describe four ages, and they name them Gold,
Silver, Copper and Iron and Clay. The Egyptians also divided time into four ages, and
at the end of each age there is a period of purification where souls can either catch the
wave of Ascension or repopulate the next age.
Many spiritual traditions also speak of humanity dwelling in paradise and then some
sort of a fall taking place, and then the journey of man's return to the Divine. This is
what is going on now in our lives today. This is why many of our lives are so crazy.
If we couple this timing with the fact that we are here to assist this process, and from
past-life training we have the ability to assist this process, you can see why it is so
important that each one of us on an individual basis learn how to take hold of our
power.
There are many other references to this division of time, for instance, in the Bible in
Nebuchadnezzar's Dream ( Daniel 2: 31-45). In the dream, there was a bright and
terrible image, with the head of finest gold, a chest of silver, hips of brass and legs of
iron. The feet and toes were iron mixed with clay. The image was destroyed by a stone
which crushed the feet to dust, and the pieces blew away in the wind.
In the Hopi story of creation the four worlds were destroyed because people had grown
away from the Creator's instructions. They say we inhabit the fourth world which is
about to be purified again by the Great Spirit.
25
The Incas left records of cosmic upheavals which ended previous world ages. The
ancients knew that before the present sky and earth were formed, man was already
created and life had manifested itself four times.
Mayans also counted their ages in four, but they called them suns instead of ages -
Water, Earthquake, Hurricane and Fire. These suns marked the epochs which described
the various catastrophes that the earth suffered. The famous Mayan calendar forecasts
the end of the present cycle as December 21, 2012.
Sun spots were also studied in relationship to times of turmoil on earth. It is not
surprising that their findings, which began at the year 500 BC. through to its present
day, found that the more traumatic times in history were accompanied by solar storms.
In fact, the Gulf War in the Middle East was six months after a cycle of the most
turbulent solar storms known in history.
Why is all of this important and what does it mean to you.? I have spent some time on
these prophecies because, while many are familiar with the fact that we are changing an
astrological age in the year 2000, many do not realize that it also coincides with the end
of a yuga as well as with the end of the Mayan calendar. When we look at these facts, it
is difficult not to be aware that we have chosen to be here at a very significant time. As
we look at the calendar we also notice that the time is getting shorter, and we may
begin to see some of the predicted events take place any time now.
It is vitally important for you as Light-Workers to have control of your power and your
energy to assist this process as much as possible. It is why you are here. I truly believe
that personal growth will be the byproduct of your assistance. If we all truly learn and
practice these spiritual laws we will catch the wave this time because, let's face it, we
are all leftover from the last yuga, and it is our turn to catch the wave, this time
successfully!
Suppose you are sitting at home watching television and the news comes on. You are
faced with seeing riots in the streets, crimes against the weaker members of our society,
etc. After 30 minutes it can get pretty overwhelming. What can you, one person, do in
the face of so much trouble in the world? You can, at the finish of each story, say
(aloud or silently) "This is God-in-Action. The Light will somehow bring this into
balance. With all the Power which I AM, I command the Light to come forward in this
situation and bring it into perfect balance!" You would be amazed if you could see what
just one person taking this stand could do. It would be greatly reassuring to you. Who
knows, yours may be the very energy that tips the balance toward peace and harmony.
Remember, it is no accident that you are seeking in this direction. Many of us have
many different tasks at these times. No one is any greater or less than another. Some
will be called to do more visible things, like uncover corruption, or confront whaling
boats on the high seas. God Bless them all. But don't get to caught up in the idea that in
order to be powerful you must be visible. Remember, it is all energy, and energy is
moved from the mind and the heart and not by manipulating the outer form.
26
There is another law of energy that you should know. When you gather together with
others of like intention you square the energy. That means if there are 3 in your group
you have the power of 9 . If there are 5 you have the power of 25. My mathematical
ability does not permit me to take this idea any farther, but I'm sure you know what I
mean.
I would also say, if it is possible, that you find at least one other person whom you can
talk to honestly and from your heart. As you practice these principles more and more
you may find that some of your old relationships change. You won't be sitting around
the coffee pot at the office gossiping as much any more. When things are worrisome
and you are taking the stand that it is all God, it is sometimes helpful to have at least
one other person who understands your intentions.
Another reason why it is helpful to have a spiritual support system is that some of our
less useful habits are ingrained from many years of practice. Sometimes so much so
that we don't even recognize that we are being negative or gossiping or judging. If you
have a fellow Light-Worker who understands your spiritual goals, you can be helpful to
catch these habits in each other.
It's time to start taking these truths seriously. There is no time left to just sit and ponder
the intellectual possibility of their reality. This is a time for action. We are all warriors
in a battle for the Light, and spiritual laws are our weapons. Become aware of your
thoughts and your reactions, and take charge of your campaign. Of course, you can
always stay behind and populate the next yuga, but that doesn't sound like much fun to
me.

Lesson 4
ENERGY AND TOUCH
One of the things I have always loved to do in this field is to teach. And yet, I find it
frustrating because I was taught in such a different way than I am able to teach. Back in
the 60's when I was taught, there was less of an intensity or hurriedness about it. There
was also the awareness that you studied with one teacher for many years, and to be
accepted into a development class at all was a process that one had to qualify for. So
that if you did qualify, it meant that you were willing to give a few years of your life
over, at least on a part-time basis, to do that.
I hope that by now you have established for yourself a fairly regular schedule of
meditation and that you are being able to see yourself as part of this grand scheme of
things.
In Lesson 3, as we progressed mankind through the ages of gold and silver and bronze
through the present age, you can see how your perception of Divinity got a little
clouded over the progressions of the millenniums. Some of you who wrote in saw that
as a sort of depressing progression of things. Those of us who are left in the third
dimensional consciousness were the failures of the earlier two times of purification. I'm
not so sure that that is necessarily an accurate judgment. For one thing I think that
many of us are here precisely because we are talented and have the spiritual desire and
commitment to see this change through.
I think that it is a good idea to remind ourselves often that there are parts of our brain
and parts of our awareness that we have not used in many lifetimes. It's simply a matter
of finding out what our talent is and accessing it with a regular amount of accuracy.
PSYCHOMETRY
As I stated in the earlier lessons, everything is energy. Just as when we touch a glass
with our hands we leave fingerprints on that glass even though we can't see them, with
the right equipment these fingerprints can be detected and analyzed. In much the same
28
manner strong emotion, feeling, the essence of who we are is often transferred into
objects.
I have found in my years of teaching that one of the easiest ways to learn how to
expand your own awarenesses is to train yourself to become sensitive to the vibrational
residue which is left behind by people and emotionally powerful situations. The
technical word for this is psychometry. Psychometry put plainly is the art of feeling
vibrations in objects and making some sort of sense of them.
For instance, a piece of jewelry which you wear often, whether it be a watch or a ring,
even your car keys, which are often in your possession on a daily basis, becomes highly
charged with the energy emitted from your auric field. It is possible for someone to
hold your watch or ring or car keys and, in a meditative state of mind, become receptive
to the energy in these objects. They become so receptive to the energy in these objects
that they can draw conclusions from them. This is also possible with the substance of
paper, especially if something has been hand written on it.
If you purchase estate jewelry or inherit jewelry from other members of your family, it
is good to be aware that you are also carrying the vibration of that person. I remember
being very confused one time when I was practicing psychometry in my early student
years. I had a very lovely ring in a Tiffany setting and it was very prized by the woman
for whom I was reading. I had the feeling that the owner of the ring had lost a child at
about seven or eight in a freak accident, that the child had light colored hair, and I had
impressions of the state of Connecticut and a man's name, Ernest. There was also
something to do with books. When I began giving out this information to the woman
whose ring I was holding, she could not accept any of it or understand it until I got to
the part of the man named Ernest. That name triggered something within her and she
said that it was her grandmother's ring which had been left to her in an estate. Her
grandmother had lost a son at the age of seven who had fallen from his pony and
suffered a massive hemorrhage in the brain. It was a freak accident and he was indeed
blonde, the whole family was. Her grandmother and her grandfather, named Ernest,
lived in rural Connecticut, and he wrote for journals and magazines. I don't know why
the grandmother's vibrations were stronger than the woman who was presently wearing
the ring. Perhaps because her grandmother had worn the ring for more years or perhaps
because losing a child is such an emotional event that the vibrations were very loud.
If you work with someone who is going to do a psychometry reading for you, or if you
are reading for someone else, make sure that they are the only person who wears the
jewelry. If you inherit or buy some jewelry and you are not sure of the vibration of the
original owner, simply running that jewelry under cool running water will cleanse the
vibration and you can make the piece more your own.
Psychometry is often used in police work, often when the standard methods have failed
to produce. Most police departments employ a psychic when they are desperate. I
remember working on a murder case in Erie, Pennsylvania.
A young man had been shot in his apartment. No one heard or saw anything and there
were no fingerprints. The furniture in the room was overturned. I was taken to a room
which still had the chalk markings on the floor where he had fallen. They gave me his
bloody shirt and a pair of jeans.
29
I paced around the room for a while just letting my mind come to rest. It was difficult.
The police officer was barely tolerant. When I told him my first impression was that he
worked at G.E. and he had gone to work with his father, they answered that they knew
that already. They did, but I knew nothing and I'd come up with a real specific. That
gave me the courage to brave their skepticism. Eventually I saw him walk to the door
and let someone in. From that they deduced that he knew his assailant and from the
description I gave them they knew who to go after. This way they caught him before he
covered it up. Yet even after all of that they would not officially acknowledge our help.
That would have been a difficult situation for a student to be in. Fortunately I knew that
all the information would be there if I could be patient enough to just let it come.
Patience and perseverance are two of the secrets of psychic receptivity. Another secret
is the condition of your hands.
One thing that I would like to remind you of is the fact that there are many chakras in
your hands. There is a major one in the palm area but there are strong minor chakras in
the tips of each of your fingers. These chakras are places of energy exchange. When
you hold the object in your hand, experiment by shifting it from hand to hand and
touching it with your fingertips. In this way you will be able to determine where you
are most receptive to the energy coming from the object. Some people like to do this
with their eyes open, others prefer their eyes to be closed, thus shutting out all
distractions except the feeling of the energy.
Another hint along these lines is the use of a pumice stone. This is a stone which can be
found in most drug stores. It is made from lava and used cosmetically to rid the hands
and feet of rough skin. Regular use of this will soften your hands and increase the
sensitivity. For some reason physical calluses over the areas of the chakras decrease or
distort the flow of energy.
If psychometry is an area where you seem to have some talent, you may want to rub
your hands a few times a week with a pumice stone and use a nice natural lotion to help
keep your hands soft and sensitive. Especially in the beginning, I feel it is very helpful
if your hands are sensitive to touch.
One way you can increase your sensitivity to touch is to be more aware of what you are
touching. You will hear a lot in these lessons about being in the moment, or being in
the now. In this hurry up world we are often on sensory overload. Many of us are in
situations where phones are ringing, TV or music is playing in the background, people
are talking to us about one thing while we try to accomplish another. We have learned
to shut out most distractions as a matter of survival. Now we must learn to open up
again. We must learn to focus on what we are doing at the moment. We must learn to
notice what we are seeing and touching. It is our nature to be sensitive beings. We are
especially tactile. Just see how much a baby loves to be touched if you have any doubt
of this.
The next time you pet an animal or repot a plant or simply pick up the mail, observe
your actions. Say to yourself, I am holding this envelope in my hands, what does it feel
like? If there are many envelopes in the mail close your eyes and feel each one. You
30
may discover that each piece of mail has a different texture. You will discover the
difference in the "feelings" from a birthday card or a bill. Try this with your eyes
closed. It is great confirmation when you can give an accurate report, especially when
you can convince yourself that there are no visual clues.
All of these are merely interesting parlor tricks which at the best teach us that there is
much more to the universe than we may be aware of. The real purpose of mastering
them is that they lead us to our inner spiritual guidance. All the universe is energy and
that energy is constantly trying to communicate with us. It loves us. It wants to lead us
to our greater good.
This is why it is so necessary to meditate daily. Meditation lets us slow down enough to
hear when God speaks to us. One of the ways that communication could come is
psychometry.
Psychometry has finer aspects too. It can provide a doorway into other dimensions,
other planes. This is where Billets come in. A Billet is a piece of paper which is
energized by the seeker. The idea of billets was made popular by Spiritualists. The
classic form is to write the name of three beings from the spirit world. These beings can
be either dead relatives or Spirit Guides. Sometimes personal questions are also asked
on the paper. The paper is then folded up and collected for the medium or psychic.
If you hold the paper in a receptive way, it will speak to you. You may get impressions
of spirit guides, you may get the answer to the question which was asked. With very
little practice you will get something. Try it with your friends. It is good to try to
practice with people you don't know well, but practice with friends is better than no
practice at all. Besides, conditions in the world change so quickly these days that even
good friends can hold a few surprises.
Suppose you are about to buy insurance or a new vehicle. Ask if you can have the
contract to look over for a day or so. Then when you are very calm, sit in a comfortable
place and let your mind calm down. Feel the papers. Be aware of any sensations you
feel in the physical. Did you tighten up? Maybe there's a reason. Did you feel relaxed
and safe? What pictures come into your mind? Do you like holding the paper? Ask
yourself if the person making out this paper is dealing with you honestly. Trust
yourself. Your responses will be correct 85% of the time. The other 15% you were
probably unsure of and guessed wrong.
True and accurate psychic impressions come from a place of peace inside of you. As
long as you maintain that place of peace the objects will communicate with you freely
and easily. Usually what happens is you start out getting clear impressions and then you
notice what you are doing. This ability doesn't fit your model of who you are. Oops!
What was that last impression.....and then your id takes over. After teaching psychic
development for 30 years I am certain that when error occurs, this is how it happens.
Psychic ability comes from the creative nature. Unfortunately creativity is not an
encouraged attribute in our culture, or in many cultures for that matter. Most of us are
taught that to conform is desirable. Schools, churches and families encourage us to toe
31
the line or get with the program. Work rewards company men. However, in psychic
work uniqueness is necessary. NO two psychic will read a situation or an individual in
an identical way. Both may be accurate, but the subject will be approached from the
psychic's unique perception.
So I would encourage you to work with each other in small groups on a regular basis, if
possible. The addition of group energy will enhance your own psychic ability. So if it is
possible, practice at least some of the time with a group. Not only will the energy of the
group enhance the whole experience, but you will make friends who will be supportive
in your new experiences.
One of the things that you may discover as you continue to expand your consciousness
and sensitivity is that not a lot of your friends and family may support you or even
understand what you are trying to do. Much of the world is ruled by their intellectual
mind and they become very suspicious of anyone who "walks to a different drummer".
Let us take some time to examine some of the objections which may come your way.
One of the fiercest comes from people who are on a spiritual path that they believe to
be the only one. You will often hear the statement in metaphysics that "there are may
roads up the mountain and they all lead to the top". This encompasses the belief that
you can find God no matter which spiritual path you take. This runs into direct conflict
with many who believe that they have they only true way. So one objection that you
may encounter is that you are under the influence of Satan. I'm sure most of you who
are reading this have already heard these words from someone.
The first thing I would say, based on years of encountering this objection, is there is no
way to answer this. To answer it would mean that you would need to enter into an open
minded discussion of the issues and beliefs that lead to this belief. It has been my
experience that this argument is usually launched by people who have closed their mind
to inquiry and are really just wanting to tell you how wrong you are and what jeopardy
your soul is in.
Really we are not so far apart. Metaphysics teaches us that we are Gods-in-Embryo
learning to shed the fearful part of ourselves that doesn't quite trust that we are Divine.
Metaphysics also teaches that there are many "Ascended Beings" called Masters who
have already done this, and by their writings and examples they have left the blueprint
for us to be able to do the same thing. They are also available to us to contact in a
spiritual way and willingly, in fact, eagerly, send their grace to assist our process.
32
Those who differ with us usually believe that we are made in the image and likeness of
God. However, somehow in that image and likeness the Godly qualities did not
transfer. They believe that we are sinners who can not be "saved" except through
Divine Intervention. This is probably one of the biggest differences in our beliefs.
Metaphysicians believe that man has the responsibility to make good choices in life and
that plus grace will help us reach our Ascension. Others believe that man on his own
can do nothing, it is only through the intervention of Jesus Christ that we are "saved".
Others may consider you eccentric or just plain crazy. I often am amazed at the number
of people who pursue this knowledge under cover, so to speak. You are out there in
many different walks of life, perhaps sitting right next to a soul mate at work and not
having the courage to pursue it.
HEALING HANDS
One of the benefits of meeting people who share your interest is that it gives you
someone to practice with. Hands-on healing is often a comfortable place to start. Some
of you may find that you are VERY TALENTED in this area. Over the years it has
been my observation that an army of healers is on this planet. It has also been my
observation that an army of healers is needed. We don't have enough, or I should say
we don't have enough with the courage to use their craft.
In the palms of your hands are two medium sized chakras. If you rub your hands lightly
together and hold them about six inches apart, gradually bringing them together until
they are about two inches apart; you will feel the energy. Feel it with your sense of
touch. DON'T FEEL IT WITH YOUR HEAD. Close your eyes if you need to. Use the
pumice stone if you need to, but as your sense of touch expands it leads naturally to
your intuitive senses as well.
I can't tell you why this is true. I can only say that my teachers told me it would work. I
in turn have used these same techniques with my students. All I can say is they work.
Perhaps there are healers out there that can tell you why. I will be the first to confess
that my knowledge of Healing is limited. What I do know I will share with you.
First, expand your sense of touch. This can be done by paying attention when you touch
things all day long. Feel the car keys in your hand. Experience the joy of touching your
children or your pets. Consciously FEEL your world. This also helps you to remain in
the moment.
After you have expanded your sense of touch and experienced feeling your own energy,
find a friend to practice with. Have your friend sit sideways in a straight back chair.
The idea is to have all the chakra areas open to your energy. If you start a comfortable
arm's length above the head of your friend and slowly lower your open palms, you will
feel your friends energy. By experimenting and slowly moving your hands through the
aura of someone, you will become as sensitive to the touch of that energy as you are to
the touch of something more physical. Practice produces results. For some of you the
results may be astounding. For some, no matter how hard you practice the results are
merely pleasant. Your talent may lie in another area.
33
The next thing that is needed is INTENTION. You have to have a desire to heal. I
know that sounds simple, but it requires that you let go of the focus on yourself and
focus on your friend. You have to pay attention to what comes into your mind as you
are moving your hands. Your mind can't be on what you need to do next. It must be
present in the moment, focused, suspending judgment and projecting unconditional
love. Remember, you are the Channel of the Healing. The energy that comes through
you heals. You are the vehicle of that energy. Whether or not the Healing occurs
depends on the strength of the energy and the receptivity of the client.
Strength of the Energy depends on how well you can open yourself up to let it in. The
healer works in a kind of standing meditation. The focus is on the breath and the breath
breathes love to the client. When thoughts intrude that do not have to do with the
experience of healing let them go, as though they were attached to a helium balloon and
return to the act of opening to the energy. If you can, visualize the energy coming in the
top of your head and through your heart and out your hands. At the same time imagine
some of that energy going through your feet into the earth, returning up through your
tail bone to your heart and out your hands. Visualization isn't necessary, but it does
intensify the energy.
Now as to the second component, the receptivity of the client. This is an interesting
factor, but one that needs to be looked at. Many who say outwardly that they desire to
be healed sometimes, subconsciously, aren't ready to let go of their condition. The body
is one of the ways we receive communication. Often times when the body appears to
malfunction it is because it has a message for us. It may be important to understand the
underlying issue before the body can let go of the problem.
My ex-husband is a healer. When we lived in Lily Dale he helped to run the Healing
Temple. It was a wonderfully quiet place to meditate and I would often sit there while
he was working. It would amaze me to see him sending incredible amounts of energy
and light to his clients. Some of them absorbed the energy like a sponge while others
deflected it as though they were batting it away with a tennis racquet. So it is important
not to take responsibility for the healing one way or the other. You are a conduit. You
can make yourself as sensitive as possible, you can generate as much love as you can,
but that is all.
One concept that was lost as we got more technical was the knowledge that man is
connected to nature. I think when we farmed more and each family at least grew their
own vegetables we had a better feel for cycles. We no longer look at the coats of the
animals to tell us how winter is going to be, we ask a meteorologist.
Paying attention can be a challenge. We have a lot of distractions. Noise and scheduling
pressures just to name a few. That is why it is essential for you to keep to a schedule of
regular meditation. I will probably sound like a broken record on this subject, but that is
34
because it is so important. I encourage all of you to commit to a 30 day period of daily
meditation. If you are consistent for 30 days you will have a first hand experience of its
benefits.
Exercise One
Exercise Two
Exercise Three
Use of hand lotion or the pumice stone can enhance this exercise.
Exercise Four
Removal of the court cards can help in the beginning. Later you will be able to sense
their different feel too.
Exercise Five
35
3. Slowly bring your hands towards each other.
4. Notice any change of temperature, pressure or tingling sensation you may feel.
5. This is your own energy field.
Exercise Six
1. Seat a companion in a straight back chair or a stool so that their back is facing
you.
2. Rub your hands together.
3. Extend your arms full above their head palms down, hands slightly wider than
your shoulders.
4. Slowly lower your hands toward the head of your companion.
5. Notice any change of temperature, pressure of sensation as you lower your
hands.
6. As you approach your companions aura you will feel a slight resistance.
7. Repeat this exercise as you stand facing the side of your companion. One hand
at the front and one hand at the back.
8. Notice any changes which occur, especially around the areas of the chakras.
These exercises have been designed to help get you in touch with energy. Their are
many advanced studies which will help you with techniques. I will not make any
judgments as to which would be best for you. Your own Higher Self will lead you in
that direction if it is for you. The best healers I have ever known have followed their
hearts. Remember, this is not your first life and very probably you learned these
techniques long ago, perhaps you even taught them. So if you feel inspired, trust
yourself. That is the real key and with practice you will learn to recognize your own
inner communications. TRUST YOURSELF !
Lesson 5
THE SPIRIT WORLD
The World of Spirit is as real as the physical world. It is inhabited by beings, some of
whom have had an earth life, and some who will never have an earth life. These beings
are as real as you or I. This world is not a chaotic place. It is a place of order and
harmony. It is a place of rules and laws, just as our physical world is.
Unlike our physical world, when these rules or laws are broken the consequences
follow immediately. They are set by the energy of the law itself, and ignorance of the
law will not avoid the consequences of breaking it. Neither is there any opportunity to
plea bargain yourself out of the consequences. The laws are entirely just and treat each
of us equally.
On the physical plane, if you jump from a high place you will fall. It doesn't matter
what sex you are, what race you are, whether you are wise or foolish. It doesn't even
36
matter if you believe you will not fall, you will still fall. Cosmic Law works the same
way, equally and impartially.
One of the benefits of studying in Lily Dale is the access to the largest metaphysical
library in the country, the Marian Skidmore Library. The books in that library are out of
print and priceless. As a student, I spent many a fascinating afternoon reading this
precious material. What I will share with you is drawn from these sources.
The World of Spirit has many different inhabitants. These beings are drawn together by
vibration. It is tempting to get into comparisons as we talk about these beings, but truly
they are just different. Each one has a function and each function is important. A diva is
as important as an angel or a Master. They are just different from the others and do not
share their functions. Comparison is a human trait. Judgment does not exist in the
World of Spirit. So as I name these beings I don't want you to think I name them in any
particular order.
ANGELS AND ARCHANGELS: These are beings of pure cosmic Light. They will
never need to have a human incarnation. They are beings of pure love and service to
God. Because we are made of that Divine Substance, they also serve us. The ones we
are probably most familiar with are Guardian Angels. A Guardian Angel is assigned to
each soul who is to enter the physical plane. This Angel stays with the soul until and
through the death process. Its function is to protect and serve. It protects us from
physical accidents which might interfere with the soul's ability to fulfill its purpose, and
it keeps our connection to the Divine strong should we have times of doubt or faltering.
Archangels can take human form, but only as messengers. Gabrial, Rafael, and Michael
are some of the more popular ones. This brings us to another thing that you may have
noticed. In spite of artistic fancy angels, when they do appear, seem to resemble males,
although technically they are asexual. There are nine choirs of angels: Thrones, Powers,
Glories, Cherubim, Seraphim, Principalities, Dominations, Virtues, and Archangels.
Angels also perform special services. There are Healing Angels, Ministering Angels,
Warring Angels, Wind Angels, and Prayer Angels, just to mention a few.
ASCENDED MASTERS: These are beings who have had earth incarnations, but have
so realized their Divinity that they do not have to come back through the birth
experience anymore. This is, hopefully, where we are all headed. They have different
functions. These functions can range from keeping the Universe moving in harmony to
insuring that Cosmic Law operates, but most of them lovingly watch over us and come
back to instruct us so that we can take our rightful place at their sides. Some of the
names you might recognize are Jesus, Buddha, St. Germain, Hilarion, Khutumi, Sanat
Kumara, Lord Maha Chohan, Lord Matraiya. There are thousands of Ascended
Masters.
7 ELOHIM: These beings are not mentioned by name. If their names were ever known
they were thought to be so sacred that they were never spoken. The Elohim created the
Universe and are in charge of all of the elements, both physical and ethereal.
37
THE WHITE BROTHERHOOD: These blessed beings appear to us as monks or
brothers in White Robes. They can be male or female and may have been any race
while they had earth incarnations. They give loving service to those souls who have just
passed over, and guide them through the process of death leading them to the degree of
Light where they are most comfortable. They help souls who are lost or earthbound to
find the Light. They search out souls who are resonating with a low vibrational activity
and help them come into the Light. They help souls to adjust to being dead, particularly
if the death was a shock. They nurse back to strength those souls whose etheric energy
was depleted by death, such as those who died of a long and exhausting illness.
ELEMENTALS: These beings appear small in physical size and are most concerned
with our physical universe. We know them as divas, fairies, gnomes, elves. Sometimes
they are helpful and sometimes they are playful. even tricksters. The old Druids and
Celts thought the fairies were particularly dangerous because they could so bewitch a
human that they would lose their awareness of time and forget to eat or wash, even to
the point of death. Since many of these creatures are nature spirits, they lavish
kindnesses on gardeners. I have a friend who made a pact with the divas that she would
tend her garden well in honor of them, and not only is her garden the lushest on the
block, but her gardenias bloom all year long.
HUMANS: That's us. The souls who keep forgetting their Divinity when they enter the
physical plane. We souls often don't even remember the full scope of our Divinity when
we are in the World of Spirit. But we are evolving and one day we will join the ranks of
the Ascended Masters.
You will notice that nowhere in the above description have I mentioned demons. Most
beings who appear to be demons are humans who are so locked into one of the seven
deadly sins, hatred, anger, envy, sloth, lust, gluttony, greed, that they are obsessed and
have temporarily lost the desire to seek the Light.
I recently had occasion to see a friend who was so bitter about his divorce that he was
consumed with anger over it. He wasn't just angry, his whole aura had become anger.
As I looked at him psychically, he appeared to have fangs, deep bags under his eyes,
pocked skin which looked scaly like a snake. The fingers on his hands resembled claws.
Yet this same soul, when he lets go of his bitterness, will be capable of filling himself
with so much Light that he could just as well resemble an angel.
However, a soul can stay in a demonic state for lifetimes, even though the opportunity
to advance is offered when we are out of the body as well as in the body. We always
have free will. Sometimes we can be stubborn. Many years ago I had a client who was
mad at her sister. This disagreement had caused a rift in the family because she kept
trying to make everyone take sides. The truth was she missed her sister's company and
she wanted the family to be reunited, but she wanted her sister to admit her mistake
more. As humans we can be like that. Magnify that energy for a whole lifetime or
maybe more than one, let it become the obsession of every waking moment, and pretty
soon you have a demonic appearance.
38
One of the first cosmic laws I ever learned was LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE. I kept
hearing this from many different teachers and it took me awhile to really fully
understand the meaning. I first heard it in psychic development classes. It was referring
to the fact that I should keep my own energy as high as possible so that I could attract a
high soul to work with me. I also learned that as long as my consciousness was okay I
didn't need to fear lower entities.
Later I came to understand that our thoughts are living things that have energy and
vibration. They do not die away after we have them, but they stay in motion until they
have enough momentum to manifest what they represent. In other words, I can say I'm
broke and that will be a single thought. If I don't have much feeling behind it won't do
too much damage. The worst it may do is add density to my aura and depress my
emotions a little. If, however, I repeat that statement in many different forms, and if I
add emotion to some of them, I create a thought form. A thought form is magnetic
(that's another cosmic law). It will attract to itself all that is like itself. So from the
beginning of time, the energy of everyone who ever put out a thought of being broke
will be drawn to me to enhance my own creative process. This is why it is so important
to watch every thought we have and every word we speak.
Did you ever watch anyone who was really angry? The more they talk about being
angry the angrier they get. That is because they pick up the momentum of everyone
who has ever been angry at the level that they are angry, from the beginning of time.
This magnetic attraction works even after death. The Spirit World is divided into
vibrational fields called Planes. Much literature will tell you that there are seven planes.
The names of these planes are not as important as their functions. The names are taken
from Sanskrit, which is one of the most ancient languages on the planet. There is no
true English translation for these words but I will try to give you their meaning.
7 MAHAPARANIRVANIC
6 PARANIRVANIC
5 NIRVANIC

Upper 3-7 Disencarnate Entities
Lower 1-2 Lost Earthbound Souls

39
NIRVANA refers to the highest state of consciousness which humans are capable of
understanding. You will notice that there are two planes above that. We are not certain
of much about these planes except that they exist. This seems to suggest that even after
we know our Divinity our evolvement continues and, indeed, there are hints about this
all throughout metaphysical literature. But since most of us seem to be having difficulty
understanding our Divine nature it is useless to speculate as to what is beyond that.
BUDDHIC is the plane where we operate from intuition. The closer we get to the
Nirvanic plane the purer the intuition. This means without thought we automatically are
in sync with the Divine flow of energy. This we do without having to run it through the
mental process. Buddhic is a state of total harmony with everything.
MENTAL is divided into two parts. The first three subplanes are called the Rupa and
refer to the form of mental process. Logic and reason are part of this. The physical
plane is understood through examining its form in a reasonable way. Actions are
figured out by studying data. Subplanes 4 through 7 of the MENTAL plane have more
to do with the formless. Here is the understanding of concepts which can not always be
brought down to ideas in form. Quantum physics resides here. We know that a quark
exists even though we can't see it.
ASTRAL is not a Sanskrit word. It's root refers to starry. It was coined with the idea
that supernatural beings came from above or from the stars. It is visible to the physical
human eye, at least for some of us. Subplanes 3-7 are where most of us hang out in
between lives. This is also where many of our Spirit Guides are from. In fact, the great
majority of Spirit communication comes from this plane and the MENTAL plane.
Subplane 1-2 is often referred to as the LOWER-ASTRAL. Some refer to it as Hell. It
is full of sad and lost souls, some of whom are not even aware that they have left the
physical body. These are the subplanes where hauntings and poltergeist activity
originates. It is not a happy place.
PHYSICAL is also divided into subplanes. The first is solid matter and has the densest
vibration. The second is liquid. The third is gaseous. The gas with the highest vibration
is ether. In the early days of Spiritualism, when materialization was a common
phenomena, ectoplasm (the substance which the spirits were made of) was found to
consist mostly of ether. Hence the name for the next subplane, etheric. Here we find
matter which is visible to the practiced human eye but is not densely physical.
Superetheric encompasses the subplane 6 and 7 of the PHYSICAL plane. All perceived
visual and auditory manifestations fall into this category.
You may be wondering why you should know any of this. Well, as more and more
people seem to be receiving Spirit communication in one form or another, it is
important to know that this communication could be coming from any number of
places, all of them with some potential for accuracy.
Suppose you go to a psychic for a reading. Do you know where your psychic is getting
her information? Does she even know? We would all like to believe it is coming from
the BUDDHIC or NIRVANIC plane, but that may not be true. Unless your psychic is
40
approaching sainthood, it is much more likely to be coming from the MENTAL or even
the ASTRAL plane.
I find it amazing that otherwise intelligent human beings are so blindly naive when it
comes to Spirit messages. When I was a student one of the things which was drummed
into my head over and over was TEST THE SPIRIT! The Bible warns us that Spirits
can lie and we should test them, yet I don't think I have heard this concept mentioned in
twenty years. Many of you who are new to all of this, and even some of you who have
been around a few years, seem to give unquestioning power to anything which Spirit
says.
Okay, so now you know that it is a good idea to TEST THE SPIRIT. How do you do it?
You do it by looking at the accuracy level of what you are told in your readings. Before
that accuracy level is proven to be at least 75 to 80 per cent, you take it with a grain of
salt. Find one or two psychics that you feel comfortable with and who have a good
accuracy level for you, and stick with them for major guidance. Let the rest be for
entertainment.
Another way to TEST THE SPIRIT is to ask for predictions about world events or
events in the life of someone close to you. That way you cannot unconsciously self-
fulfill your own reading. Then you do it again even if the Spirit was right. It may
surprise you to know that even Spirits on the lower Astral are capable of accessing
some degree of truth.
No reputable psychic or Spirit would object to this. Indeed, the very act of testing raises
the vibration of your reading, because it empowers you to the status of informed seeker.
For the most part, Spirit Guides are souls who are in-between incarnations. They are
motivated by love and a desire to do service, which helps them to absolve karma. They
learn by observing us in a way which may not have been open to them when they were
alive. For instance, a Guide who led a privileged life while on the earth plane may
chose to be around someone who is having to earn their own way, in order to learn the
challenges of this and how to meet them. Many of us have probably performed this
function for others.
Once you have tested your Guide and found them to be genuine, you can ask their
assistance for anything, from finding you a parking place to helping you find your life's
work. They are tireless and will always answer our call.
Those of you who are actively working on your spiritual path may have more than one
Guide. This is often referred to as a Band of Guides. A full Band of Guides will include
the following:
A GATE KEEPER: This Guide watches the door or opening in your aura and will
screen those souls who are allowed to talk to you or through you. The Gate Keeper is
often, but not always, a young child or a very joyful spirit.
41
A HEALER: This Guide assists those of you who are desiring to do healing work in
any form. Some of you who are active healers may attract more than one healing guide.
A CHEMIST: This is like having your own Spirit Doctor. This Guide will assist
with your detoxing and chemically adjust the elements in your aura to facilitate your
own healing. An old Spiritualist tradition was to meditate with a glass of water by your
side so that your chemist could put whatever you needed into the water which you
would drink after meditation. It often has a very unusual taste.
THE PROTECTOR: This Guide helps to give you strength and energy. He protects
you physically and is often an animal of great strength. Frequently silent, except to
warn you of physical danger, this wonderful soul is often an unsung hero.
THE TEACHER: This is a scholarly Guide who is drawn to those of you who are
seriously studying metaphysics. He or she will lead you to the books and teachers
which will most benefit your path of study.
THE MASTER: In some literature this soul will be referred to as the MASTER
TEACHER. This being is an Ascended Master who has broken the cycle of death and
rebirth. Many of you have been students of his on the earth plane in the old Mystery
Schools. You will know your Master because you will be drawn to his teachings. There
is a very warm relationship which exists between Master and disciple and you will feel
it in your heart.
First of all, if you have gotten this far in your spiritual study, I think you can safely
assume that you have at least one or more guides. Sometimes psychics will tell you
their names, but it can be more exciting to discover their names for yourself. I think it is
important to remember that Spirits do not need names. Names are a physical invention
for identity which is not needed when each unique rate of vibration is easily
recognizable. There is, however, a cosmic vibration of sound which is associated with
each Spirit, and it can often be duplicated into the form of a name.
The name of your Guide should feel right to you. It should be a word which you are
comfortable with. Sometimes, when a psychic gives you the name of your Guide it may
not feel comfortable. If that is the case, don't automatically accept the name as truth. It
may be close. Names are one of the hardest impressions to send telepathically, so if
your psychic isn't clairaudiant (if she doesn't hear things) there can be room for error. It
has been my experience that a guide who doesn't speak will send the impression of the
name one of two ways. The first way is to send a picture of the name. This is often
done by Native American Spirits. For instance, White Eagle would show a white eagle.
Other names are quick thoughts and often it takes practice to have the courage to
42
believe the thought. I find it is easier to get a name for someone else than to get it for
myself.
In the exercise part of this lesson I will give instructions for a method which will try to
access your guides more directly.
Don't laugh. This is by no means a child's toy and, in fact, a lot of havoc has been
stirred up through this seemingly harmless board. The use of the Ouija can be traced
back hundreds of years as a tool of Spirit communication. The plus side is that almost
anyone with patience and serious intent can make it work. The down side is it is a
tedious method of communication, second only to table tilting for it's slowness. It can
be purchased at most toy stores and the truly creative can make their own. Before the
ouija was created, an inverted wine glass was used for the planchette and letters of the
alphabet were written on paper and set in a circle. This method is fun because it allows
more than two people to provide the energy for the planchette. It is my opinion that
having as many as four to six people with only a finger on the inverted wine glass
prevents it from being "moved" by a force other than spirit.
I am assuming all of you have at least seen a Ouija Board, if not actually tried to
communicate with one. Here are some basic steps to insure a clearer communication:
Step One: It is important for you to sit with someone who is taking this as seriously
as you are. They must be of like vibration. Remember the rule like attracts like. If you
sit with a skeptic or a joker, you will draw in lower energy. The spirits work on the
energy you create. If there is no agreement between partners the messages will be
gibberish.
Step Two: PRAY! It is important that you affirm that you are sitting in white light
and that you are calling in the highest communication possible.
Step Three: Have patience. Give the Spirit time to feel comfortable with the board.
Some will do this by coasting around it for awhile. Others will move quickly back and
forth. When the Spirit is ready for your questions it will come to a rest in anticipation.
Step Four: Have one person ask the questions. Keep them simple. In other words, if
your question has part A, B, & C, ask the parts one at a time, giving the Spirit time to
answer each part fully.
43
After you are familiar with your Spirit, you may guess at the completion of some of the
words, but in the beginning it is better to let the Spirit answer fully.
A little helpful hint: One of the first questions I ask is "Do you write English?" You
would be surprised at how may people get some soul speaking ancient Samarian or
something and then get discouraged.
Step Five: If you get a Spirit who is abusive or profane send it packing immediately.
Turn the planchette over. Wait a few minutes and repeat the prayer. Remember, you are
the boss.
Step Six: When you feel tired or you sense a drop in the energy, quit. It is tempting,
especially in the beginning, to want to continue long into the night, but remember that
when the energy level drops, so does the quality. When you close, say a little prayer of
thanksgiving. It will help you establish a more spiritual atmosphere for the next time.
The ideal way to use a board is to have two people put one hand each on the planchette.
You can switch hands that way if you get tired. A third person with a paper and pencil
to write the questions and the answers is ideal.
Sometimes Spirits have their own little idiosyncrasies. They may throw an odd letter in
once in a while. They may spell phonetically. When someone is there to write things
down, it is possible to go over the communication at a later time and often discover that
more was received than you were first aware of.
Used correctly, the Ouija board is a wonderful tool. One of the oldest texts on Spirit
communication, The Betty Book, was communicated through the Ouija Board. If you
have the patience, the right intention, and good companionship, who knows what you
could receive.
SUMMMING IT UP
The World of Spirit is as real as the physical world. It has laws that are natural to it the
same way there are natural physical laws. Even though the Spirit World is
multidimensional, the key to it all is vibration and resonance. The rule of like attracts
like should be your comfort and your caution.
It is important to remember that not all spirits tell the truth. Some of them are bored and
looking for excitement, and we often provide that for them. Test the Spirits and learn to
separate the true from the jokers.
Get to know your Spirit guides. Speak to them on a daily basis. They can be of
tremendous assistance to you. However, NEVER give your power away, even to your
44
most trusted guides.. You are the Light and the Power, and part of your journey is to
learn that about yourself and to learn how to use that power for the benefit of life.
The following are exercises to help develop meeting and experiencing your guides:
This is an exercise which you can read into a tape recorder and then try later following
your own instructions. Often your subconscious self will trust the sound of your own
voice and allow you to relax to a deeper level than you could reach in a group. Read
this in the third person as though you were talking to yourself.
Let your body be comfortable as you sit. Focus on your breathing. Let
your mind try to find that spot where your inhale and exhale meet (give
yourself about 30 seconds to do this). As you experience your breath,
you begin to be aware of its' power. You consciously allow each breath
to relax you to a deeper level than the breath before it.
Your mind is relaxing and letting go. It may stop this experience any
time it wants, but right now it is choosing to let go.....Your eyes feel
more comfortable closed and so you allow them to gently shut, knowing
that you can open them any time you chose.
You are at one with your breath and each breath takes you deeper.
Deeper and deeper..........More relaxed..............
You see a light in the distance and as you move closer to the light you
realize that it is a beautiful hallway.
Gently and easily you allow your consciousness to drift closer and closer
to the hallway.
You find yourself immersed in golden light as you travel down the
hallway. This light soothes you and relaxes you. You can feel it in every
cell of your body. It is revitalizing and healing.
You become more aware of your surroundings as you move though the
light...........You become aware that there are beautiful ornate doors
along the hallway. Each one is different. Some are ornate and some are
simple, but all have their own beauty.
Soon you find yourself drawn to one door in particular. It feels familiar
and you watch yourself extend your hand and touch the doorknob.
The doorknob turns easily and you enter a beautiful room. You pause on
the threshold and just breathe in the energy of the room. It fills you with
peace and you find that you are even more relaxed than you were before.
As you look around you become aware of a Light radiating from around
a high-backed chair. You watch as the chair slowly turns. Sitting in the
45
chair waiting for you is your guide. You may spend as much time with
your guide as you wish, asking whatever questions you need to ask.
When you feel complete with the experience, thank your guide and say
farewell. You leave the room with the comfortable feeling that you may
return whenever you need to.
As you continue back up the hall way you feel full of peace and
contented, knowing that you have brought yourself closer to your guide
and feeling the unconditional love which has been surrounding you. Let
yourself gently come back to full consciousness.
This is a fairly easy exercise which allows you to have physical contact with your
guides.
1. Stand with your feet slightly apart, your arms at your sides and your palms
open.
2. Take three deep cleansing breaths in through your nose and out through your
mouth.
3. Say out loud, "If I have any guides present, make your presence known."
4. Wait for your guides to push you from front to back.
5. Keep repeating until you feel the push from side to side that will tell you that
the exercise is completed. It is also possible to use this exercise like you would
a pendulum, front to back indicating yes and side to side indicating no.
46
