ABSTRACT

The socially significant Ayodhya Case first started in 1885, when Mahant Raghubir Das files
plea in Faizabad district court seeking permission to build a canopy outside the disputed Ram
Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid structure. This was followed by many other pleas and physical
intervention in the disputed site by both parties. This dispute became an issue of national
importance after the demolition of the disputed structure on 6th December 1992. This led the
whole nation in to turmoil. Cases were filed in Allahabad HC and appeals came to the Supreme
Court. After eight years of legal battle in the Supreme Court now the court has decided to decide
the matter by mediation.

In this project “History and Analysis of Ayodhya Legal dispute” the researcher will study the
above mentioned Ramjanmabhoomi – Babri Masjid title dispute, a dispute which is legally and
politically relevant even today since its inception in 1885. The issue has become even more
relevant after the Supreme Court’s latest order to have mediation in this case. This project will be
doctrinal research study focused on the history of this dispute and critical analysis of decisions
taken by various courts namely the Allahabad High Court and the Supreme Court of India. This
project will also cover other land mark cases which influenced the court’s decision.
