The Company is also extending that choice by developing innovative products that
provide consumers with a choice of potentially less risky alternatives to smoking
regular cigarettes, better known as Next Generation Products (NGPs).

Pakistan Tobacco Company:

Pakistan Tobacco Company Limited (PTC) is a subsidiary of the British American

Tobacco (BAT) plc. The Company was incorporated in Pakistan in 1947 making it
one of the first multinationals in Pakistan. Starting from a single warehouse near
Karachi port, the Company is now the largest cigarette manufacturer in Pakistan. For
PTC it has been a voyage in pursuit of excellence since 1947 driven by the vision to
be the “First Choice for everyone”.

Vision Of PTC

Mission of PTC
“To be the best factory for the region.”

8
Factories of PTC:

Currently, there are two PTC factories Operations in Pakistan along with a Head
Office in Islamabad; one is situated in Jhelum and the other in Akora Khattak. PTC’s
both factories have similar production capacities. In 1957, Jhelum plant started its
operation with a single shift; gradually more shifts were added to enhance production.
Akora Khattak plant is primarily utilized to manufacture products that can cater for
the lower income groups. In adding to this, Akora Khattak plant also has a Green Leaf
Thrashing Plant
In terms of technology, Jhelum plant is more advanced than Akora Khattak plant with
better and faster machines. Both factories work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with
some time reserved for, cleaning the machines, coping with breakdowns and
scheduled routine maintenance of machine.

9
Departments
There are several departments in the Jhelum Factory which are working in tandem to
make sure that the factory remains operational. All the functions are synchronized so
as to create no gap in the communication between departments. This factory
resembles a ‘well-oiled machine’ that keeps running and consistently reaching its
goals. All the departments play a vital role in the overall efficient working of the
factory.

The list of departments is as follows:

1. Engineering Department
2. Factory Logistics Department
3. Primary Manufacturing Department
4. Secondary Manufacturing Department
5. Quality Department
6. Security Department
7. Environment, Health and Safety Department
8. Human Resource Department
9. Information Technology Department
10. Finance Department
11. Indirect Procurement

Primary manufacturing department (PMD):

Cigarettes that a customer buys from a retail shop had to undergo numerous
conditioning and processing before it comes to its final transformation as the final
product. One of the most important component of a cigarette is the Tobacco it
contains, which is treated so that a smoker gets his desired taste, flavour and of course
feeling. Hence the tobacco undergoes many sophisticated and complex processing to
achieve these desired qualities. This treatment is done at Primary Manufacturing
Department or PMD.
PMD (also known as the kitchen of PTC) is the area where the raw form of tobacco is
processed to be used in the production of cigarettes. Green Leaf Threshing Plant
(GLTP) in Akora Khattak separates the tobacco leaves in two forms known as Stem
and Lamina. These two raw forms are processed separately in the PMD area and then
mixed together to produce the final blend of the tobacco. For every brand of cigarettes
a different type of tobacco leaf is acquired and processed in the PMD. The final
product is stored in the storage area with a preserved moisture level for longer storage
purposes.

10
Secondary manufacturing department (SMD):
SMD is the area where the processed tobacco is received from PMD and then
cigarette sticks are manufactured and packing of every kind is completed. This area
involves heavy machinery hence its temperature is maintained by the chillers in the
services area to avoid heat damages to the machines. There are three parts of
processing in SMD.

HIERARCHY OF PTC:

11
Brands:
Pakistan Tobacco Company invests in trying to understand the consumers’
preferences and ensures that adult smokers make informed choices about different
brands available in the market. The highest manufacturing products are John Player’s
Gold Leaf and Capstan by Pall Mall which are manufactured regularly while the more
premium brands such as Dunhill and Benson & Hedges are manufactured with a
relatively small volume according to the demand of the consumers.

DUNHILL:
Dunhill, a premium global brand, celebrated its centenary in 2007 and 2008 was an
exceptional year for Dunhill in Pakistan as the brand witnessed exponential growth;
fuelled by its re-launch in July. Going forward, Dunhill is poised to strengthen its
foothold in the DUNHILL.
Currently there are three brands of Dunhill in production: Dunhill Full
Flavour, Dunhill Lights and Dunhill Swiss Blend. Dunhill Lights and Dunhill Swiss
are being produced to fulfil the demands of health conscious smokers.

BENSON & HEDGES:

In 1873, Richard Benson & William Hedges started a partnership in London. Benson
& Hedges was launched in Pakistan in March 2003 and has since been able to build
strong brand loyalty among its consumers showing excellent year on year growth.
Two brands of B&H are being produced in the facility namely B&H FF and B&H
Lights.

JOHN PLAYER GOLD LEAF:

The story of John Player Gold Leaf has to start from the story of its founder, John
Player. An enterprising businessman, John Player, started a small tobacco selling
business in 1877 and turned it into a thriving cigarette company, John Player and
Sons.
John Player Gold Leaf has become an institution in itself, becoming one of the most
recognizable cigarette brands in the country. John Player Gold Leaf has recently been
declared the largest Urban Brand in Pakistan, beating out products across the
F.M.C.G. spectrum.

CAPSTAN BY PALL MALL:

Capstan has a rich heritage, originating in Britain in the 19th century; the brand was
created under the auspices of W.D. & H.O. WILLS at Bristol and London.
The recent introduction of Capstan Rich has been a new boost to the production of the
factory. The new brand has been introduced after the public demand of light brands.

My Tasks:

1. Organization health survey design

2. Recruitment process
3. Record management
4. Graphical designing of survey

1. Organization health survey design:

During my internship, my first task was to conduct an organizational health survey
named as Pulse Check Survey. Pulse check survey is basically an IWS-tool used for
organization health assessment in NON_YOUR VOICE Year. As part of the org.
pillar journey, this survey is being carried out.

13
My role:
I created a survey on surveymonkey.com to see whether the employees are satisfied
with their job and to observe the relationship of the boss with their sub-ordinates.
Then I collect responses on it from different employees of different departments.
Then I analyse their responses and make a final report of the collected responses.

14
2. Recruitment process:

My role:

As I was doing internship in the HR department, my second task was about

recruitment. First of all, I made a list of female candidates whose CV’s were collected
from the career development department of their universities. I called the candidates
to schedule their interviews with my line manager. Then, I called the candidates again
who passed the interview to inform them about their results and schedule their
functional interview. After that candidates were called for assessment centre. I also
checked the result of the candidates who gave different test in PTC.

15
3. Record management:

My role:
During my internship, some apprentices were hired in the factory. So, it was my task
to manage their files. I collected their complete documents, forms and their medical
reports and manage their files. I also went to R & RS department for the checking of
the quantity of the remaining parts of different machines. I also manage an excel
credit sale report of fair price shop.

16
4. Graphical designing of survey:

My role:
I was given the final outcomes of the survey and my task was to graphically present
that survey.

17
My learning:
It has been an honour for me to work in Pakistan Tobacco Company, which is one
of the ASIA’S largest multinational organizations. It was a great professional
experience for me and i have learned a lot of things during my internship. It helped
me in improving my technical & analytical skills as well as communication skills as i
got a chance to meet many professionals who influences my thinking. I also got a
chance to visit other departments and learned from them. It helped me in
understanding how a multinational organization works.
The skills and learning outcomes during my stay at Pakistan Tobacco Company will
help me throughout my life and will surely assist me in building careers.
