Some example of existing pedestrian facilities

3.1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter shows the example of some existing pedestrian facilities in Dhaka
city. Pedestrian facilities are provided to facilitate safe pedestrian movement in
road with vehicular traffic.Various facilities or improvement measures provided
for pedestrian, affect the safety of pedestrian and accident prevention on road. In
other words the safety of pedestrian and accident prevention depends' on
facilities provided to facilitate safe pedestrian movement. While walking is being
promoted as a means of travel day by day especially for short distances at many
developed countries of the world,in our country already 60% of urban trips are
made by walking as pedestrian (DITS report) . In comparison to this large
pedestrian volume the facilities provided are not sufficient in our country. So now
a day the need of pedestrian safety facilities has increased. Various improved and
advanced pedestrian facilities are provide at some locations. To examine some of
the existing pedestrian facilities in Dhaka city field survey was conducted at some
locations.

3.2 Available Pedestrian Facilities

Various pedestrian facilities (physical structure) inclading signs, signals
and markings are available all around the world. But not all types of
facilities are available in our country. Some frequently available
facilities especially in large cities are the followings
1. Footpaths
2. At grade pedestrian crossing
I. Zebra crossing
II. Signalized pedestrian crossing
III. School Crossing

3.Overpass
4.Unerpress
During field survey it was intended to identify the existing conditions of
the above facilities where available and to observe the pedestrian
movement. The problem of the existing facilities are described
pictorially .Also provided and effective dimension left for use of various
pedestrian facilities like footpath,over bridge etc. were measured to
show the inadequate and indiscriminate use of these facilities.In the
following section the condition of some existing pedestrian facilities are
presented according to different survey location.
3.3 Farmgate,Kawran-bazar,Rampura,Mouchak,Malibagh,Naraynganj
Area
The picture were taken at 8-10-18,10-10-18 between 11.30 p.m to 5.30
p.m

3.3.1 Pedestrian Footpath

Footpaths are one of the common facilities provided for urban
pedestrian. In the recent year numerous footpaths are being
constructed and also the existing footpaths are being improved. But
there are a lot of problems relating to the maintenance and use of
footpaths by pedestrian. In urban areas the footpaths are encroached
by hawkers and vendors. Other causes of reduction of footpath width
are parking on footpath width are parking on footpath, landing of over
bridge, improper maintenance, construction materials on footpath etc.
The existing condition of pedestrian footpaths of Farmgate,Kawran
bazar,Rampura,Mouchak,Malibagh,Narayongonjarea is described
below pictorially.

3.3.2 Pedestrian Refuge
Pedestrian refuge is provided to facilitate pedestrian crossing on a two
way divided roadway. Pedestrian refuge was found on survey location.
The existing condition of pedestrian refuge ids described below
pictorially.

3.3.3 Footover-bridge
With safety design, grade-spirited crossing are most probably the best
solution.There are two over bridge on the
Farmgate,Hatirjheel,Rampura,Malibagh,Narayongonj area.The existing
condition of these over bridges are described below pictorially.

3.3.4 HaphazardPedestrian Movement
In a commercial area like Farmgate,kawran-
Bazar,Hatirjheel,rampura,Mouchak,Malibagh,Narayongonjfootpath areaencroached by retail
traders and Vendors spread treads on the footpath as well as on the roadside. For this type of
problems pedestrian are forced to walk In ahaphazard manner along the road side resulting
serous safety hazard. The pictures were taken
