Abstract:
Mind Reading is a way to detect or infer the other mental states. The simplest way for
mind reading can be done by simply seeing and understanding the facial expression. For
example, a smile can give us an expression of happiness. It may be possible that not only one
human can understand other mental states but also a computer might understand the mental
states of a person.

Introduction:
Every thought we have travels down a certain neural pathway, with a pattern
that can be identified. Mind is a representational set of abilities that allows one
to read mind. People express their mental states , including emotions ,
thoughts and desires , all the time through facial expression and gestures. Eye
language and facial movements play an important role in recognizing basic
emotions and complex mental states. Software from NEVEN VISION identifies
24 feature points on the face and tracks them in real time.
Mind Reading Machine was first developed by a team in the computer
laboratory at the University of Cambridge.

What is a Mind Reading Computer?

The ability to attribute mental states to others and to use that knowledge to
predict those of others is known as mind-reading. Mind reading computers can

translate human thoughts into words. By using a digital video camera, mind
reading computer analyses facial expressions of a person’s underlying mental
state. It is a co-ordination of human psychology and computer techniques.
A computer not only reads brain’s thoughts but also sends signals to brain to
perform a particular task.

Why Mind Reading Computers?

 The mind reading computer system present information about your
mental state easily as a keyboard presents texts and commands.
 It may be used to monitor and suggest improvements in human –human
interactions.

How does it work?

Futuristic head:
The mind reading actually involves measuring the volume and oxygen
level of the blood around the subject’s brain , using technology called
functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
The user wears a sort of futuristic headband that sends light in that
spectrum into the tissues of the head where it is absorbed by active ,
blood filled tissues. The headband then measures how much light was
not absorbed , letting the computer gauge the metabolic demands that

the brain is making. (Headband is a type of headgear which a user wear)

Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and
was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the
university of Cambridge at the time of his death. Hawking had a motor
neurone disease and he was able to communicate by the help of a small
sensor which was activated by the muscles in his cheek. He used this
sensor to type characters and numbers on his keyboard. After that swift

Techniques:

EEG:
There are other means of reading brain activity then direct
neural contact via pins. The first and most common is Electro
encephalo-graphy (EEG), where electrodes are placed against the
scalp are used to pick up a brain signals. However, this approach is
not nearly as accurate as direct neural contact and can only pick
up blurry, weak readings.
MEG:
The other, much newer and much more accurate non-invasive
technology is Magneto encephalography (MEG), but is also more
equipment intensive. Using MEG requires a room filled with
superconducting magnets and giant super-cooling helium tanks
surrounded by shielded walls.

Applications
 Control robots by brain power.
 MRC can communicate with coma patients.
 A mind-reading device that could let you control computers and apps
with your thoughts have been described in Microsoft patent
application.
 MIND Controlled wheel chair:
A mind controlled wheel chair is developed from the University of
electro-communications in Japan. This works by mapping brain
waves when a person thinks about moving left or right, forward or
back. The person can then solely move the wheel chair by this with
the help of his mind.

Advantages and Uses

 It can read minds.
 Medical Areas:
 It helps paralytic patients.
 It helps coma-patients.
 It helps people who can’t speak.
 Military Areas:
It can be used for military fields and sting operations. Government
reads people’s memories and thoughts and then rehabilitates
through torture before they commit a crime again.
 It eliminates the capability of lie.
 MRC may also be used to monitor and suggest improvements in
human-human interactions.
Disadvantages and Problems
 Privacy Issues:
It creates breach in privacy.
 It can extract important, secure and confidential information of an
individual, state or even a country.
 Tapping Brains for future CRIMES:
It can be highly dangerous if used by sinners.
 There is no way to neutralize this technology.

Future
 It may be used in future to support online shopping and learning
systems.
 It is expected that Human power will switch the light on in the near
future may be within 5 years.
 Facebook is also working on Mind Reading Technology. The company
wants to make systems to enable people to type 100 words a minute
just by thinking.

 The Affective Computing Group at the MIT Media Laboratory is

developing an emotional-social intelligence that explores new
technologies to improve people’s social interactions and
communication skills.
Conclusion
 Tufts University researchers have begun a three-year research project
which, if successful, will allow computers to respond the brain’s activity
of the computer user.
 The Mind Reading Computer that infers mental states from facial
expressions along the head gestures in real time video. The mental state
is recognized by comparing the present real time video with the
preinstalled videos which contain different expressions for different
mental state.
 The other way of detecting the mental state is to be done with the help
of futuristic headband which sends infrared light into head tissues which
absorb the light, the amount of light which are not absorbed help in
detecting the various mental states.
