Technology: Scratch

Targeted Learners/Content area: 4th Grade, Science

Lesson objectives:

4.5 The student will investigate and understand how plants and animals, including humans, in
an ecosystem interact with one another and with the nonliving components in the ecosystem.
Key concepts include

d) Habitats and niches

Lesson context: This will be at the end of a lesson on habitats and niches.
Goal of technology use: Students will work with a partner to pick a specific habitat and make a
scratch simulation for that habitat. Teacher will model this with her scratch simulation of the
ocean, which includes some animals that live there.
Brief description of how technology will be used with students: Following the lesson on
habitats, students (in a group of two) will pick a habitat that they would like to match a scratch
for. Their scratch can pretty much be about anything, but it has to demonstrate a specific
habitat and include what you would find there in that habitat. Students are encouraged to
include dialogue for extra credit points! The teacher will model her scratch, which is about an
ocean habitat. It includes some animals and a backdrop!
