STEEL DESIGN - DESIGN PLATES

INSTRUCTIONS: Write your answers on a long bond paper. Answers must be handwritten and legible. Draw figures if
needed to explain your solution/design. Avoid erasures. You may assume values, if necessary, provided that you will
state all your assumptions. (Due: April 16, 2019)

Plate # 1.) Find the required number of bolts to develop fully the truss joint shown in accordance with NSCP provisions.
Check only the allowable shearing and bearing stress of the bolts.

Plate # 2.) Select a structural tee for the top chord of the welded roof truss shown in the figure. All connections are
made with longitudinal plus transverse welds. Assume a connection length of 300 mm. The spacing of trusses in the roof
system is 4 m. Design for the following loads:
Live load: 1 kPa
Roofing: 0.6 kPa
Purlins: MC 8 x 8.5 (see steel manual for properties)
Truss weight: 5 kN (approximately)

Plate # 3.) Design a W section column that would carry an axial load of 1000 kN and a transverse load of 300 kN (the
transverse load won’t produce moment on the column, it is acting near the support of the column). Also design the base
plate of the column (dimension and thickness), the thickness of the weld needed for full weld connection, and the
number of anchor bolts diameter required for the base plate and concrete pedestal connection.
