ABSTRACT

This study presents the hydraulic analysis on Roadway culvert design. The
project site is situated in Medi village, Nay Pyi Taw Region, on the Hotel zone-Ayinlo
road. In hydrologic analysis, 24 hours maximum rainfall for fifty years return period
is considered for the design discharge. Then the design discharge is estimated by
using SCS synthetic unit hydrograph method and it is obtained as 1225.18 ft 3/s. In this
study, the regional dimensionless frequency curve is used to estimate critical rainfall
excess sequence.
For the hydraulic analysis, the concrete box shape of 14'x14', 15'x15', 16'x15'
and 2x8'x15' sizes with various inlet edge conditions is considered in this study. The
two numbers of 8'x15' concrete box culverts are more efficient than 14'x14', 15'x15'
and 16'x15' concrete box culverts. Therefore, the efficient size of 2x8'x15' box culvert
is chosen. The culvert with bevel edge inlet has less head water than any other inlet
edge. In this study, (90°) headwall with 33.7° bevel is chosen because of the most
efficient inlet type. Therefore, the two numbers of 8'x15' concrete box culverts with
90° headwall with 33.7°bevel is chosen.
For selected culvert, it is found that the discharges less than 900 ft 3/s are outlet
control. The normal depth is less than the critical depth and the critical depth is less
than the tailwater depth. So, the flow is subcritical. The discharges greater than and
equal to 900 ft3/s are inlet control. It is found that the critical depth greater than the
normal depth. So, the flow is supercritical.
